La primera velada del año de Top Rank estará encabezada por combates del peso pesado Ajagba-Rivas y Vianello-Shaw

La última velada de la temporada 2022 de la empresa Top Rank se producirá el 10 de diciembre con el Teófimo López vs. Sandor Martín, si bien menos de un mes después de esa fecha la compañía dirigida por Bob Arum ya ofrecerá su primera cartelera del año 2023. Esta se producirá el 14 de enero en el Turning Stone Resort & Casino de Verona, Estados Unidos, televisada por ESPN y contará con dos choques del peso pesado como combates principales.
En el estelar, dos olímpicos como el nigeriano Efe Ajagba y el colombiano Óscar Rivas se enfrentarán en un duelo importante para sus trayectorias tras tropiezos respectivos ante Frank Sánchez y Dillian Whyte. Esta pelea llega de forma inesperada, puesto que Rivas es el “campeón” del peso puente WBC y tenía avanzadas negociaciones con su retador obligatorio Lukasz Rozanski.
En el semifondo participará otro olímpico como el italiano Guido Vianello, que afrontará su mayor prueba como profesional enfrentándose al invicto estadounidense Stephan Shaw, que fue oro nacional amateur y que está rindiendo muy buen ante rivales de nivel medio.
En al anuncio oficial, Bob Arum señaló:
“La división del peso pesado está repleta de talento, y nosotros tenemos dos combates 50/50 que verán emerger a un par de contendientes en el Turning Stone”.
En cuanto a Ajagba, éste señaló:
“Estoy libre de lesiones y listo para mostrarle al mundo qué puedo logar cuando estoy al 100%. Respeto a Óscar Rivas por aceptar este reto. Les daremos a los fans un gran espectáculo, pero saldré victorioso el 14 de enero”.
Por su parte, Rivas explicó que piensa seguir militando en el peso puente:
“Estoy extremadamente feliz por volver al ring en Verona, donde tuve mucho éxito hace no mucho tiempo. Estoy orgulloso de mi título WBC del peso puente y lo defenderé pronto, pero esta oportunidad que nos dio Top Rank en el peso pesado era demasiado buena como para dejarla pasar. También tengo mucho respeto por Ajagba, y aunque estoy de acuerdo con él en que será espectacular para los fans, mi habilidad y mi experiencia serán la diferencia”.
Respecto a Vianello, éste afirmó:
“Stephan Shaw es un buen peleador invicto, pero combato mejor cuando se me presenta oposición top. Estoy deseando pelear en ESPN como parte de un gran doble encabezado”.
Para terminar, Shaw explicó:
“Estoy emocionado. Este es mi ocasión para brillar. Este es mi momento. Estoy listo para salir ahí y divertirme un poco. No pasaré desapercibido después de derrotar a Guido. Es un buen boxeador, pero soy superior. Lo demostraré el 14 de enero”.

Top Rank’s last evening of the 2022 season will take place on December 10 with the Teófimo López vs. Sandor Martín card, although less than a month after that date the company directed by Bob Arum will already offer its first bill of 2023. It will take place on January 14 at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, United States, televised by ESPN and will feature two heavyweight clashes as principal bouts.
In the main event, two Olympians such as the Nigerian Efe Ajagba and the Colombian Óscar Rivas will battle in an important duel for their careers after respective setbacks against Frank Sánchez and Dillian Whyte. This fight comes unexpectedly, since Rivas is the WBC bridgeweight «champion» and had advanced negotiations with his mandatory challenger Lukasz Rozanski.
In the co-feature will participate another Olympian, the Italian Guido Vianello, who will face his biggest test as a professional in a clash against the undefeated American Stephan Shaw, who was national gold medalist as amateur and who is performing very well against medium-level opponents.
In the official announcement, Bob Arum said:
“The heavyweight division is loaded with talent, and we have two 50/50 matchups that will see a pair of contenders emerge at Turning Stone.”
As for Ajagba, he stated:
“I am injury-free and ready to show the world what I can accomplish when I am 100 percent. I respect Oscar Rivas for accepting the challenge. We will give the fans a great show, but I will be victorious on January 14th.”
For his part, Rivas explained that he plans to continue fighting in the bridgerweight division:
“I’m extremely happy to be back in the ring in Verona where I had a lot of success not too long ago. I’m proud of my WBC bridgerweight title and will be defending it soon, but this opportunity Top Rank gave us at heavyweight was too good to pass up. I also have a lot of respect for Ajagba, and while I agree with him that it will be spectacular for the fans, my skills and my experience will be the difference.”
Regarding Vianello, he said:
“Stephan Shaw is a good, undefeated fighter, but I fight better when presented with top opposition. I look forward to fighting on ESPN as part of a great heavyweight doubleheader.”
Lastly, Shaw affirmed:
“I’m excited. This is my time to shine. This is my moment. I’m ready to go out there and have some fun. I won’t be under the radar after beating Guido. He’s a good boxer, but I am superior. I will prove that on January 14th.”
