Previa: Román González y Juan Francisco Estrada cierran al fin su trilogía

Entre el primer combate y el tercero han transcurrido ya diez años, pero al fin este sábado el futuro miembro del Salón de la Fama nicaragüense Román “Chocolatito” González 51(41KO)-3(1) y el mexicano Juan Francisco “El Gallo” Estrada 43(28KO)-3 cerrarán de una vez por todas su competencia. No obstante, pese al paso del tiempo, todo parece indicar que todo ello terminará de la misma manera que comenzó, es decir con Chocolatito saliendo con el brazo en alto.
Más allá del controvertido resultado del segundo combate, ganado por Estrada con una decisión dividida en marzo de 2021, parece que González entra en mejores condiciones a la tercera pugna, que se disputará en el Gila River Arena de Glendale, Estados Unidos.
Y es que aunque la teoría dice que es muy difícil para un púgil veterano ejecutar adecuadamente el estilo de González, el nicaragüense ha sabido adaptarlo de manera satisfactoria. Es decir, aunque durante la mayor parte de su carrera ha encarando sus peleas basándolas en muy intensa presión y en una altísima cadencia de golpes, a diferencia de otros boxeadores con un estilo similar, en este último tramo de su carrera González ha sabido modificar su forma de combatir para, sin hacer los combates tan físicos como en el pasado, lograr establecer dominios firmes.
El ejemplo más reciente de ello lo encontramos en su amplia victoria sobre Julio César Martínez, un boxeador mucho más joven y explosivo que él al que anuló con un excelente uso de los bloqueos, desvíos y sutiles esquivas, un gran manejo del jab y varadísimas combinaciones de golpes en todas las trayectorias posibles. De ese modo, González no sólo evitó ser arrollado, sino que incluso terminó llevando a las cuerdas a un púgil que, sobre el papel, tenía muchas ventajas.
Por su parte, el estilo de Estrada, que siempre ha sido más técnico/táctico y menos agresivo que el de González, al sufrir un bajón en su rendimiento físico le ha llevado a verse casi constantemente en peleas demasiado contendidas, incluso ante contrincantes con un nivel mucho más bajo que el suyo. En el pasado sus certeros golpes aislados eran acompañados de una fluidez de desplazamiento que ahora no posee, y aunque todavía puede ganar combates por su precisión, tenacidad y sus sensacionales esquivas, se vé en problemas que antes no tenía. A esto se debe añadir que en su última pelea, ante un Argi Cortés por debajo del nivel de la élite, a duras penas logró vencer y tuvo una reacción ante el castigo que dejó una impresión negativa en muchos espectadores.
Evidentemente, los duelos entre González y Estrada tienen un significado especial para ambos, y es de esperar que los dos púgiles ofrezcan lo mejor que les quede. En este sentido, seguramente “El Gallo” pondrá sobre el cuadrilátero una mejor versión que ante Cortés. Sin embargo, si González consigue mantener un ritmo más estable que en la segunda pelea ante Estrada y no deja que su contrincante le arrebate la iniciativa durante un cierto número de rounds, debería poder marcar la diferencia claramente con su gran selección de golpes y su superior frecuencia ante un púgil que suele manejarse peor que él en los duelos repletos de intercambios.
En los choques entre boxeadores veteranos y que se conocen muy bien, siempre hay margen para que sucedan cosas inesperadas, no pudiendo ser descartado que uno u otro pueda padecer una ruptura de su rendimiento al tener que encarar otra dura batalla más o que logre mejores éxitos de los previstos con una táctica diferente a la habitual. Pero lo que sí está claro es que este campeonato mundial por el vacante cinturón WBC del peso supermosca será seguramente otro muy emocionante enfrentamiento entre estos icónicos boxeadores y que sus contiendas serán por siempre recordadas como históricas en el pugilismo en general y como encuentros monumentales para las divisiones más ligeras.
El tercer enfrentamiento González-Estrada, y su respaldo (que será tratado en otra previa), serán emitidos por DAZN el sábado desde las 20:00 ET/17:00 PT, las 2:00 de la madrugada del sábado al domingo en España.

Between the first fight and the third ten years have passed, but finally this Saturday the Nicaraguan, future Hall of Famer, Román «Chocolatito» González 51(41KO)-3(1) and the Mexican Juan Francisco «El Gallo» Estrada 43(28KO)-3 will close their competition once and for all. However, despite the passage of time, everything seems to indicate that all will end the same way it began, that is, with Chocolatito leaving the ring with his arm raised.
Beyond the controversial result of the second fight, won by Estrada with a split decision in March 2021, it seems that González is in better condition for the third bout, which will take place at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, United States.
Although the theory says that its very difficult for a veteran fighter to use González’s style properly, the Nicaraguan has managed to adapt it satisfactorily. That is to say, although during most of his career he has faced his fights relying on a very intense pressure and a very high work rate, in the last stretch of his career González (unlike other boxers with a similar style) has known how to modify his way of fighting so as to establish firm control of the bouts without making them as physical as in the past.
The most recent example of this can be found in his wide victory over Julio César Martínez, a boxer much younger and more explosive than him whom he neutralized with excellent blocks, parries and subtle dodges, great use of the jab and a great variety of combinations from all possible angles. In this way, González not only avoided being overwhelmed, but he even ended up taking to the ropes a fighter who, on paper, had many advantages over him.
For his part, Estrada’s style, which has always been more technical/tactical and less aggressive than González’s, has suffered a lot his drop in physical performance, something that has led him almost constantly to fights too contested, even against opponents with a much lower level than his. In the past, his accurate isolated punches were accompanied by a fluidity of movement that he doesn’t possess now, and while he can still win matches with his precision, tenacity, and sensational dodges, he has troubles that he didn’t have before. To this must be added that in his last ring appearance, against a fighter below the elite level as Argi Cortés, he barely managed to win and had a reaction to punishment that left a negative impression on many spectators.
Obviously, the duels between González and Estrada have a special meaning for both, and it is to be expected that the two fighters will offer the best they have left. In this sense, surely «El Gallo» will put a better version of himself on the ring than against Cortés. However, if Gonzalez manages to maintain a steadier pace than in the second fight against Estrada and doesn’t let his opponent take the initiative for a certain number of rounds, he should be able to clearly win with his great selection of shots and his higher punch output against a fighter who tends to handle worse than him fights full of exchanges.
In duels between veteran boxers and who know each other very well, there is always room for surprising things to happen, and it cannot be ruled out that one or the other may suffer a sudden decline in their performance in another tough battle or that one of them could achieve better success than expected with a different tactic than usual. But what is clear is that this world championship for the vacant WBC super flyweight belt will surely be another very exciting confrontation between these iconic boxers and that their fights will forever be remembered as historic in boxing in general and as monumental clashes for the lighter divisions.
