Es completamente posible que en la carrera de un boxeador una pelea concluya por un fortuito choque de cabezas. Si esto sucede dos veces empieza a ser algo bastante sospechoso. Con todo, la pasada noche el peso gallo estadounidense Gary Antonio Russell 19(12KO)-1 por cuarta vez vio como una de sus pugnas terminaba por un cabezazo que él mismo había provocado. En cualquier caso, Russell esta vez no se pudo escapar de la derrota y el excampeón mundial puertorriqueño Emmanuel “Manny” Rodríguez 21(13KO)-2(1) le venció por decisión técnica (100-90, 99-91, 99-93).
En el primer asalto Rodríguez impactó una nítida derecha con la que puso en apuros al zurdo Russell, quien de todos modos se recuperó y en los siguientes rounds intentó utilizar su velocidad de manos y su cadencia de golpes a través de directos. No obstante, Rodríguez estaba controlando bien los tiempos para impactar precisos, astutos y potentes contragolpes, y en el cuarto round volvió a poner en dificultades a su contrincante, que fue desequilibrado.
La pelea fue oscilando en cuanto a las posiciones de ambos, con uno y otro cediendo la iniciativa antes de saltar a agresivas ofensivas, y Russell hizo lo que pudo manteniéndose activo de manos, pero siguió estrellándose contra el gran timing de “Manny”, cualidad que salió a relucir de nuevo en el octavo round, en el que una gran derecha a la contra puso en el tapiz al estadounidense.
Después de momentos de confusión al final del round causados por el árbitro, y que permitieron descansar más de la cuenta al local, se llegó a un noveno round en el que Russell asestó un brutal cabezazo (antes de impactarlo estaba mirando a la cara de su rival, por lo que el golpe no pareció involuntario). El testarazo dejó muy dolorido a Rodríguez, pero las acciones se llegaron a reanudar y el asalto terminó, si bien en el décimo round una revisión del médico llegó a la conclusión de que la pelea no podía continuar.
Más allá de que los árbitros necesitarán estar muy atentos a los cabezazos de Russell y descalificarlo si vuelve a asestar uno más, que sería ya el quinto, la derrota supone la certificación definitiva de que no está al nivel de la élite del peso gallo, siendo impensable que pueda aspirar a retar a Inoue. En cuanto a Rodríguez, después de cómo perdió ante el japonés, una revancha no parece nada aconsejable, pero si aguarda unos meses quizás los cinturones de la división del peso gallo puedan quedar vacantes si Naoya Inoue, como se espera, se proclama campeón indiscutido ante Paul Butler el 13 de diciembre.

It is perfectly possible that in the career of a boxer a fight could end by a clash of heads. If this happens twice it starts to be something strange. However, last night, for the fourth time in his career, a bout of the American bantamweight Gary Antonio Russell 19(12KO)-1 ended after he hit his opponent with a headbutt. In any case, Russell this time could not avoid defeat and Puerto Rican former world champion Emmanuel “Manny” Rodríguez 21(13KO)-2(1) beat him by technical decision (100-90, 99-91, 99-93 ).
In the first round, Rodríguez landed a good right hand that put in trouble the southpaw Russell, who nevertheless recovered well and in the following rounds tried to use his hand speed and his punch rate through straight shots. Despite his efforts, Rodríguez was showing a great timing and he landed precise and powerful counterpunches, so in the fourth round he rocked again his opponent.
The bout was oscillating in terms of the positions of both fighters, with one and the other renouncing to the initiative before lunging in aggressive offensives. In this kind of fight, Russell did what he could staying active with his hands, but he continued to crash against the great timing of «Manny», who used again this weapon in the eighth round with positive results: a great counter right hand put the American on the mat.
After moments of confusion at the end of the round caused by the referee, and which allowed the local to rest more than a minute, in the ninth round Russell landed a brutal headbutt (before hitting with his head, he was looking into his opponent’s face, so it didn’t seem unintentional). Rodríguez suffered a lot of pain, although the actions were resumed and the round ended. However, in the tenth episode the doctor’s review concluded that the fight could not continue.
Beyond the fact that the referees will need to be very attentive to Russell’s headbutts and disqualify him if he lands one more, which would be the fifth, his defeat is the definitive certification that he is not at the level of the bantamweight elite. In fact, it is unthinkable that he can aspire to challenge Inoue. As for Rodríguez, after how he lost to the Japanese, a rematch does not seem advisable, but if he waits a few months, perhaps the belts of the bantamweight division may become vacant if Naoya Inoue, as it is expected, becomes undisputed champion beating Paul Butler on December 13.
