La WBA ordena eliminatoria Ward-Kholmatov para decidir al retador del campeón del peso pluma

La Asociación Mundial de Boxeo ha anunciado que ha ordenado la disputa de una eliminatoria final del peso pluma entre el número 1 y el número 2 de su ranking, es decir el británico Thomas Patrick Ward 33(5KO)-0-1 y el uzbeko Otabek Kholmatov 10(9KO)-0. Este es un interesante choque puesto que Ward, invicto en 34 combates como profesional, afrontará el duelo más exigente de su carrera ante un pegador con buena carrera amateur y que llega de vencer una eliminatoria semifinal ante un boxeador de nivel alto como Andranik Grigoryan.
A partir de que los equipos de Ward y Kholmatov recibieron la notificación del inicio de negociaciones, tendrán un mes (hasta el 4 de noviembre) para llegar a un acuerdo, o de lo contrario se llegará a una subasta con repartición de la puja 50-50.
Este enfrentamiento servirá para decidir al retador obligatorio del monarca WBA del peso pluma Leo Santa Cruz, si bien éste tendrá que lidiar primero con otro adversario. Y es que, tras la cancelación del Leigh Wood vs. Mauricio Lara por lesión del primero, la WBA puso sobre la mesa de nuevo el choque entre Santa Cruz y Wood, con el que se quiere seguir el proceso de reducción de campeones en este organismo.
Así, en teoría habrá que esperar a que Wood se recupere, a que negocie de nuevo la pelea contra Santa Cruz, a que esta potencialmente se dispute y a que se zanje este largo y absurdo culebrón (en el que ni Matchroom ni PBC han puesto las cosas fáciles), para ver al vencedor del Ward-Kholmatov accediendo la mundial. Aunque, visto lo visto, no sería sorprendente si Wood o Santa Cruz renunciase a su pelea y el ganador de la eliminatoria ocupase su lugar.

The World Boxing Association has announced that it has ordered a featherweight final eliminator between number 1 and number 2 in its ranking, that is, the British Thomas Patrick Ward 33(5KO)-0-1 and the Uzbek Otabek Kholmatov 10(9KO)-0. This is an interesting clash since Ward, undefeated in 34 bouts as a professional, will face the most difficult fight of his career against a puncher with good amateur career and who comes from winning a semifinal eliminator against a high-level boxer like Andranik Grigoryan.
From the moment in which Ward and Kholmatov teams received the order to the start the negotiations, they will have one month (until November 4) to reach an agreement, or else they will settle the issue in a purse bid with a 50/50 split.
This match will decide the mandatory challenger of the WBA featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz, although the titlist would have to defeat first another fighter. After the cancellation of the fight Leigh Wood vs. Mauricio Lara due to an injury to the former, the WBA once again put on the table the clash between Santa Cruz and Wood, with which they want to continue the process of reducing champions in this organization.
Thus, in theory we will have to wait for Wood’s recovery, for a new negotiation of the fight against Santa Cruz and for the bout to potentially take place (closing this long and absurd chapter in which neither Matchroom Boxing nor PBC have made things easy), to see the winner of the clash Ward-Kholmatov reaching the world title fight. However, taking into account what happened so far, it would not be surprising if Wood or Santa Cruz renounced to their fight and the winner of the eliminator took his place.
