If Tyson Fury defends his heavyweight belt against Charr, that would be very fishy

Rumors had been swirling for weeks, stating that WBC world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury was planning to face Syrian Mahmoud Charr in December despite all his talk about a fight with Anthony Joshua. This same thing was publicly pointed out a few days ago by Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, who suspected that the Fury-Joshua was not going to happen next and that «The Gypsy King» was going to face Charr.

Finally, a few hours ago, Fury was the one who directly stated on his social networks that he had terminated the negotiations with Joshua (blaming “AJ” for the fight not materializing) and that he was now aiming to fight Charr. This news has disappointed all those fans who thought that the fight between the two British boxers could happen next.

Both those who have been let down with this turnaround and those who are dissatisfied with the selections of opponents that Fury has often made in his career have gone on to criticize (justifiably) the appalling replacement chosen. Charr, who has never been a great fighter and who in 2015 was brutally knocked out by the cruiserweight Mairis Briedis, has practically not fought since 2017, having had only two very easy and brief fights against very low level opponents.

Still, despite critics assume that choosing Charr as an opponent is simply a move by Fury to laugh at the fans while obtaining a big purse without assuming any risks, the truth is that they may not be looking at this choice of opponent from a broad enough perspective. That is to say, there are dozens of fighters as easy or easier than Charr who could have been selected instead of him and who would require less effort in the offices. In fact, choosing Charr as an opponent is impractical.

When the Fury-Charr began to be rumored, the latter was not even ranked in the WBC (something logical), but in the last update of the list he appeared as 19th in a more than strange movement of this organization. So, why give Charr a shot at a world heavyweight title in a sanctioning body in which he wasn’t ranked when any other easy fighter who didn’t require ranking manipulation could have been picked?

The answer could lie in the fact that Charr, despite not having been active in the ring, has been very active with his lawyers, having filed a lawsuit against the WBA that could shake the very foundations of professional boxing. In this case it has been pointed out that the president of the WBA and members of his family and close associates, sometimes operating through companies and lobbies, have a corruption scheme that manipulated rankings, awarded title fights and did other shenanigans in exchange for money and gifts. As if this were not enough, according to some, with a deep investigation, perhaps connections could be established between that alleged plot in the WBA and other organizations.

So, just when the lawsuit is waiting to enter a crucial phase, Charr, the boxer who started it for not having received a title opportunity for the WBA heavyweight title, now receives a multimillion-dollar world title fight against Fury, one of the most relevant names in current boxing. In other words, explained with a different example, that would be as if a person who has sued a government body for having taken away his house, before going to trial received a huge house granted by another government body…

Whoever believes in coincidences, is free to do so, but this is at least a rather fishy coincidence. Especially considering that the promoters will have it easy to find a low-level opponent for Fury with more prestige than Charr and who could generate more sales.

In the absence of the Fury-Charr fight being confirmed, we can only wait to see how this chapter concludes. Perhaps Fury, in his willingness to fool people, will unexpectedly come back to the negotiations with Joshua for the December fight. Perhaps, an unforeseen event will prevent Fury from fighting in that month and he will directly face a clash with Usyk in 2023. Or perhaps pointing to Charr was just a promotional plan so that the public, once this fighter has been ruled out at the last minute, considers acceptable a match between Fury and a late substitute like the punished Chisora. Still, if the Fury-Charr is announced, it wouldn’t be surprising if the latter drops his lawsuit against the WBA, considering himself paid thanks to a strange and suspicious «quirk of fate”.
