Isaac «Canelito» Avelar defeated Roberto Meza by unanimous decision (Full fight video)

DoubleTree Hotel, Ontario, United States. Featherweight.

Although in his last two fights he had offered meritorious performances against undefeated boxers, the Mexican Isaac «Canelito» Avelar 17(10KO)-5(2) entered his fight against Roberto «The Ram» Meza 15(8KO)-3-1 as betting underdog and with a recent record of 1-5. However, Avelar used his grit, experience and work rate to pull off a unanimous decision victory with scores of reasonable double 77-75 and a somewhat excessive 78-74.

During the first two rounds Avelar tried to use his straight shots cunningly, but Meza had an advantage in punching clearness that seemed like it could be a determining factor in the fight, especially if it continued to be characterized by selected actions in the center of the ring. However, from the third round «Canelito» increased his pressure and his punch output, overcoming with it Meza, who was put against the ropes and could not answer with sufficient firmness or enough number of hands.

At a certain point, Meza took the initiative and hit Avelar before he could deploy his offensives, something that served “The Ram” to reduce the effectiveness of his opponent, who is not nearly as dangerous going backwards than advancing. But Meza, who was coming from more than a year of inactivity, could not or did not know how to maintain his pressure so, getting visibly tired, he was again led to the ropes and hit with long combinations by Avelar, whose frequent hooks allowed him to impress the judges and win the rounds.

Obviously, this victory isn’t going to make Avelar a contender in the featherweight division, but simply should help him get a new call (with an improvement in his purse) to be a demanding test for a boxer with aspirations. Even so, despite his youth he has a lot of quality experience, and it would not be surprising if he scored an upset victory against an opponent who makes the mistake of underestimating him or entering the fight unprepared.
