La exitosa andadura en el peso superwélter de la olímpica británica Natasha Jonas 12(8KO)-2(1)-1 tras ascender desde el peso ligero sigue adelante. De hecho, en el combate coestelar de la velada Smith-Mwakinyo, Jonas venció a la sueca Patricia Berghult 15(3KO)-1 para proclamarse campeona unificada. El resultado fue una decisión unánime con amplísimas pero justas cartulinas de 99-91 y doble 100-90.
El combate no tuvo demasiado orden en sus repetidos encontronazos en la distancia corta pero, como se podía esperar, la potencia y la explosividad de Jonas le sirvieron a ésta para impactar contundentes curvos en los intercambios que por lo general fueron claramente superiores a los tibios puños de Berghult.
Alcanzada la mitad la visitante intentó añadir movilidad a su boxeo para intentar usar sus jabs y reducir la intensidad del combate, pero esto no le dio tampoco grandes resultados, siendo alcanzada por fuertes manos salteadas de Jonas. Así, a Berghult no le quedó otra que responder con determinación en los intercambios, conectando un buen cruzado en el sexto asalto. Con todo, en el siguiente round fue golpeada por peligrosos directos enlazados con cruzados.
De hecho, la sueca comenzó a pagar el precio de los golpes recibidos y en el octavo asalto fue varias veces estremecida por los puños de una Jonas cada vez más agresiva. En cualquier caso, la británica no logró derribar a su contrincante ni forzar la detención y se tuvo que conformar con una amplísima victoria por decisión.
En posesión de dos cinturones mundiales, para proclamarse campeona indiscutida de la división a Jonas sólo le queda conquistar las coronas WBA e IBF, que están en posesión, respectivamente, de Hannah Rankin y de Marie Eve Dicaire. Por lo tanto, Jonas, que tiene en mente medirse a la primera, deberá estar muy atenta a lo que su compatriota Rankin haga en su próxima pugna, que se producirá el día 24 de septiembre ante Terri Harper.
Clarke venció con golpes bloqueados
Al igual que Adam Azim, el invicto peso pesado, bronce olímpico, Frazer Clarke 3(3KO)-0 logró una victoria en el primer asalto. Con todo, el triunfo de éste ante el búlgaro Pencho Tsvetkov 7(5KO)-1(1) no fue precisamente espectacular.
Con poco más de treinta segundos transcurridos, un gancho zurdo abajo bloqueado supuso el primer knockdown padecido por el visitante, que otros treinta segundos más tarde tocó la lona de nuevo tras un directo diestro y un gancho zurdo también bloqueados. Entonces el árbitro paró el duelo al considerar que no tenía sentido alguno, algo de lo que debería haberse dado cuenta en primer lugar el matchmaker de la velada.

The successful run at super welterweight of the British Olympian Natasha Jonas 12(8KO)-2(1)-1 after moving up from lightweight continues. In fact, in the Smith-Mwakinyo co-main event, Jonas beat the Swedish boxer Patricia Berghult 15(3KO)-1 by unanimous decision to become unified champion. The scorecards were wide but fair: 99-91 and double 100-90.
The fight did not have much order in its repeated clashes in the short distance but, as expected, Jonas’ power and explosiveness served her to land forceful hooks in the exchanges that were generally clearly superior to the weak punches of Berghult.
With the half point reached, the visitor tried to add mobility to her boxing to try to use her jabs to reduce the intensity of the fight, but this did not give her great results either and was hit by sporadic hard hands by Jonas. Thus, Berghult had no choice but to respond with determination in the exchanges, connecting a good hook in the sixth round. However, in the next round she was punched by dangerous straights hands linked with lead hooks.
In fact, the Swede began to suffer the effect of the shots received and in the eighth round she was rocked several times by the hands of an increasingly aggressive Jonas. In any case, the British did not knock her opponent down or force the stoppage and she had to settle for a lopsided decision win.
Owning two world titles, Jonas only has to conquer the WBA and IBF crowns to be proclaimed undisputed champion. These belts are held, respectively, by Hannah Rankin and Marie Eve Dicaire. Therefore, Jonas, who has in mind a fight against the former, will have to pay close attention to what her compatriot Rankin does in her next fight, which will take place on September 24 against Terri Harper.
Clarke won with blocked punches
Like Adam Azim, the undefeated heavyweight, Olympic bronze medalist, Frazer Clarke 3(3KO)-0 scored a first-round victory. However, his TKO over the Bulgarian Pencho Tsvetkov 7(5KO)-1(1) was not exactly spectacular.
With little more than thirty seconds elapsed, a blocked left hook to the body caused the first knockdown suffered by the visitor, who another thirty seconds later was down again after two more blocked punches: a straight right hand and a left hook. Then the referee stopped the bout considering that it did not make any sense, something that the matchmaker of the evening should have realized in the first place.
