Difícilmente Top Rank habría podido emparejar mejor el próximo enfrentamiento del puertorriqueño José “Sniper” Pedraza 29(14KO)-4(1) y del ghanés Richard “RC” Commey 30(27KO)-4(1), ya que al poner a ambos frente a frente ha hecho un combate repleto de sentido. Dos excampeones mundiales con cualidades, con las mismas dimensiones casi exactas, que vienen de derrotas, que fueron ambos derribados y vencidos por decisión por Lomachenko y que están bien clasificados, se miden en un choque que permitirá al ganador revalorizarse y reengancharse a la parte alta de los rankings del peso superligero y a las conversaciones para importantes combates.
Hay que destacar que Pedraza es 12º WBC y 14º WBO, mientras que Commey es 9º IBF y 13º WBC, por lo que el ganador de este cruce entre rivales directos en las listas tendrá garantizado quedar no muy lejos de una eliminatoria o de una pugna de consecuencias similares.
Por otro lado, este es un buen choque de estilos. Pedraza es un púgil móvil, elusivo y con una variada y hábil selección de golpes que se enfrenta a un Commey con un boxeo más simple, pero con una enorme ventaja en potencia y que tiene mucha mayor capacidad de marcar la diferencia a una sola mano.
Ciertos detractores le han dado la vuelta a este combate y han afirmado que son dos boxeadores acabados, sin posibilidades de volver a coronarse y cuyo enfrentamiento, por lo tanto, carece de interés. Con todo, más allá de que estas valoraciones son injustas y mal medidas, es curioso que algunos que critican con tanta dureza este choque alaben al mismo tiempo el modelo de las artes marciales mixtas, en el cual se producen muy a menudo eventos encabezados por duelos bien emparejados pero entre púgiles con un balance de victorias-derrotas mucho peor, con líneas de resultados recientes bastante malas y que tienen muchísimas menos posibilidades de llegar a capturar un cinturón.
Dicho esto, y volviendo al boxeo y al Pedraza-Commey, que realmente muestra cómo deberían ser los combates estelares no titulares, con peleas con sentido entre top 15 que no se rehuyen combatiendo contra piedras de toque modestísimas y sin encaje, el favorito para ganar será el boricua.
Lógicamente, la pegada de Commey siempre dejará una ventana abierta para que pueda aspirar a romper las acciones a su favor en algún momento, pero la profundidad de recursos tácticos de Pedraza sobre el papel debería causar dificultades decisivas para el despliegue ofensivo del ghanés. Para tratar de evitar que las entradas y salidas y los precisos golpes de “Sniper” creen una maraña difícil de sortear, Commey necesitará mantenerse sólido, paciente y constante, apoyándose en sus mejoras armas, especialmente el uno-dos. Por su parte, Pedraza necesitará boxear dinámico y sin brechas, fluir en las transiciones a posición defensiva y aprovechar su capacidad al contragolpe para frustrar a su rival en tareas ofensivas.
Pesos pesados claros favoritos
En el respaldo de este evento, que se producirá en el Hard Rock Hotel & Casino de Tulsa, Estados Unidos, destacan tres peleas en la división del peso pesado, si bien todas ellas tendrán un abrumador favorito. En el combate coestelar, el insigne prospecto Jared “Big Baby” Anderson 11(11KO)-0 no debería tener problema para aplastar al serbio Miljan Rovcanin 24(16KO)-2(1), que en su mayor combate fue derrotado con gran sencillez por Agit Kabayel (KOT en tres rounds).
Por otro lado, el nigeriano Eje Ajagba 15(12KO)-1 regresará a la senda del triunfo tras su decisiva derrota ante Frank Sánchez midiéndose a un púgil de muy modesto nivel como el húngaro Joszef Darmos 14(10KO)-4(2)-3, mientras que el plata olímpico estadounidense Richard Torrez 2(2KO)-0 no lo debería tener mucho más difícil para batir al mexicano Marco Antonio Cañedo 4(2KO)-2(1).
Los combates Pedraza-Commey y Anderson-Rovcanin serán emitidos en Estados Unidos por ESPN, ESPN+ y ESPN Deportes el sábado desde las 22:00 ET/19:00 PT (las 4:00 en España), mientras que el respaldo inicial lo retransmitirá ESPN+ hacia las 18:30 ET/15:30 PT (las 00:30 en hora peninsular). En los países en los que no se pueda acceder a una emisión de ESPN, se podrá ver parte de la velada a través de un PPV de Fite que se iniciará a las 2:00 en hora de España.

Top Rank would hardly have been able to choose a better matched next bout for Puerto Rican José «Sniper» Pedraza 29(14KO)-4(1) and Ghanaian Richard «RC» Commey 30(27KO)-4(1), since by making both face each other has created a bout full of sense. Two former world champions with qualities, with almost the same size, who come from defeats, who were both knocked down and defeated by decision by Lomachenko and who are well ranked, meet in a clash that will allow the winner to recover momentum, rejoin the top of the super lightweight lists and begin talks for important fights.
It should be noted that Pedraza is 12th WBC and 14th WBO, while Commey is 9th IBF and 13th WBC, so the winner of this matchup between direct rivals on the rankings will not to be far from an eliminator or from a fight of similar consequences.
On the other hand, this is a good clash of styles. Pedraza is a mobile, elusive boxer with a varied and skillful selection of punches who faces Commey, fighter with a simpler boxing, but with a huge punch advantage and a much greater danger with isolated shots.
Some have been critical with this fight and have affirmed that they are two faded boxers, with no chance of being crowned again and whose duel, therefore, lacks interest. However, beyond the fact that these assessments are unfair and poorly measured, it is curious that some of the people who criticize this match so harshly praise at the same time the model of mixed martial arts, in which often take place events headlined by well matched bouts but between fighters with a much worse win-loss balance, with quite bad recent results and who have much less chance of winning a belt.
That said, and going back to boxing and the Pedraza-Commey fight, which really shows how non-title main bouts should be (a clash between two top 15 who do not avoid risks by fighting low-level stepping stones), the favorite to win will be the Puerto Rican.
Logically, Commey’s punch will always leave a window open for him to hope to break the actions in his favor at some point, but Pedraza’s depth of tactical resources on paper should cause decisive difficulties for the Ghanaian’s offensive deployment. To try to avoid Pedraza’s in-and-out movements and precise hits from creating an insuperable barrier, Commey will need to stay solid, patient, and consistent, relying on his best weapons, especially his one-two. For his part, Pedraza will need to use a mobile boxing without gaps, flow in his transitions to defensive position and take advantage of his ability to counterpunch to try to frustrate his opponent in offensive tasks.
Heavyweights wide favorites
In support of this event, which will take place at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tulsa, United States, three heavyweight fights stand out, although all of them will have an overwhelming favorite. In the co-main event, the great prospect Jared “Big Baby” Anderson 11(11KO)-0 should have no problem crushing Serbian Miljan Rovcanin 24(16KO)-2(1), who in his biggest fight to date was easily defeated by Agit Kabayel (TKO in three rounds).
On the other hand, the Nigerian Eje Ajagba 15(12KO)-1 will return to winning ways, after his decisive defeat against Frank Sánchez, beating a boxer of very low level like the Hungarian Joszef Darmos 14(10KO)-4(2)-3, while US Olympic silver medalist Richard Torrez 2(2KO)-0 shouldn’t have it much harder to beat Mexican Marco Antonio Cañedo 4(2KO)-2(1).
The Pedraza-Commey and Anderson-Rovcanin fights will be broadcast in the United States on ESPN, ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes on Saturday from 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT, while the undercard will be broadcast by ESPN+ from 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT. In the United Kingdom it will be televised by Sky Sports Arena from around 2:00 a.m., while in other countries part of the evening could be watched through a Fite PPV.
