«Lex» Rocha was also unable to deal the first stoppage defeat to Luis Verón in the Ryan García vs. Javier Fortuna co-feature

Taking into account the long inactivity from which Samuel Kotey was coming, perhaps it was not a change for the worse that he was replaced by the resistant Argentinian Luis Verón 19(4KO)-5-2, who has never been defeated by stoppage and who in his last bout endured eight rounds against the fearsome Shohjahon Ergashev. Even so, although he showed again his resistance, the American welterweight Alexis “Lex” Rocha 20(13KO)-1 did not have a very complicated challenge and was able to win by a very wide unanimous decision (double 100-90 and one 99-91).

Despite Rocha didn’t offer a fast-paced or very aggressive approach, this fighter took the initiative and chose attacks to land power shots with hooks up and down. Verón is a boxer accustomed to fight as a visitor against high-level opponents, so against «Lex» advance, he used his lateral steps, his jabs, his blocks and other tools of conservative boxing to avoid serious troubles and stay in the fight round after round.

Even so, although he managed to resist and sometimes offered more or less contested moments, Verón consistently lost the rounds, since “Lex” always ended up reaching the short or medium-short distance with his rival on the ropes and connected hard hooks, standing out his body shots. However, although Rocha hit the torso with all his might, he was unable to cause any crucial damage to Verón, who once again reached the last bell to suffer a very clear points defeat.

That Rocha faced Kotey or Verón in part is the least important thing, since the main question is what sense does it make that a boxer ranked 11th IBF, and who scored a significant knockout victory four months ago, fought this Saturday in a mere stay-busy bout instead of facing a relevant clash. Unless this means that Golden Boy Promotions does not have high hopes in his fighter’s chances in the top 15 of the welterweight division, and that they want to give him many development fights for him to add experience, Rocha would have to face a decisive match in the last months of the year to try to stand out as a remarkable contender in a division crowded with high-level boxers.
