Arnold Barboza Jr. se impuso en duelo de invictos peso superligero a Danielito Zorrilla y apunta a Teófimo López

Habitualmente, cuando se enfrentan dos boxeadores con un nivel alto siendo uno de ellos simple pero regular y sólido y el otro talentoso y hábil pero inconsistente y con brechas tácticas, es el primero el que suele imponerse. Así fue también el viernes, cuando el estadounidense Arnold Barboza Jr. 27(10KO)-0 utilizó un boxeo firme y sin artificios para derrotar por clara decisión unánime de los jueces al hasta ahora invicto puertorriqueño Danielito Zorrilla 16(12KO)-1. Las puntuaciones fueron de 98-92 y doble 97-93.
En líneas generales Zorrilla escogió un planteamiento más agresivo de lo que suele ser común en sus combates, decidiendo situarse en el centro del ring e incluso eventualmente tomar la iniciativa. Esto le sirvió para llegar con salteados buenos golpes de poder curvos, pero había renunciado a la estrategia en la que podría haber tenido más éxitos, o sea un boxeo dinámico y al contragolpe a través del cual tenía posibilidades de sorprender a su adversario. Contrariamente, Barboza se vio en el tipo de pelea que prefiere, situado en la distancia media y larga, desde la cual pudo usar su superior cadencia de golpeo, su alcance y su buen manejo de los rectos.
Así, poco a poco el enfrentamiento se fue decantando cada vez más del lado del estadounidense, que conectaba más golpes y que también evitaba ataques de su oponente, crecientemente dubitativo a la hora de intentar avanzar. Esto permitió a Barboza, pasada la mitad, poner más determinación en sus ofensivas y empezar a generar acciones de verdadero peligro a través de combinaciones de golpes de poder, logrando finalmente en el séptimo round estremecer de forma clara y repetida a su rival.
Por lo tanto, llegados a los últimos episodios Zorrilla había perdido a los puntos y sólo le bastaba un knockout, algo que buscó. Con todo, aunque replicando un ataque de su oponente con una derecha recta logró dejar tocado a Barboza en el último asalto y posteriormente se produjeron intercambios, Zorrilla no logró evitar la derrota.
Tras el enfrentamiento Barboza señaló que su próximo objetivo es alcanzar un campeonato mundial o enfrentarse a Teófimo López. Seguramente, el triunfo ante otro ranqueado como Zorrilla le permita escalar de forma muy importante en la clasificación WBO del peso superligero, pero incluso si Josh Taylor dejase vacante su título tras enfrentarse a Jack Catterall, será difícil que Barboza pueda escalar a los primeros dos puestos y asegurarse el acceso al mundial a continuación.
En cuanto a la pelea contra López, esta es una posibilidad viable siendo ambos compañeros de escuadra y dando la sensación de que Top Rank desea el enfrentamiento. Además, el ganador del duelo seguramente sí se aseguraría convertirse en aspirante al título mundial WBO junto a Liam Paro si el cinturón quedase sin dueño. Por ello, mientras esperan a que se produzca de una vez por todas el Taylor-Catterall II, puede que un Teófimo-Barboza sea la opción que más sentido tenga para ambos en estos momentos.

Usually, when two fighters with high level face each other, with one of them having a simple but regular and solid boxing and the other having talent and skill but inconsistency and tactical mistakes, it is the first one who usually prevails. This was also the case on Friday, when the American Arnold Barboza Jr. 27(10KO)-0 used a firm boxing to defeat by clear unanimous decision of the judges the undefeated Puerto Rican Danielito Zorrilla 16(12KO)-1. The scores were 98-92 and double 97-93.
In general, Zorrilla chose a more aggressive approach than what it is common in his fights, deciding to stand in the center of the ring and even taking the initiative sometimes. This served him to land some nice power shots, but he had given up on the strategy in which he could have been more successful, that is, a mobile and counter-punching boxing through which he would have had chances of surprising his opponent. On the other hand, Barboza found himself in the type of fight he prefers, situated in the middle and long distance, from which he was able to take advantage of his superior punching rate, his range and his good use of the straight punches.
Thus, little by little the bout was being won more and more clearly by the American, who landed more shots and also avoided attacks from his opponent, increasingly hesitant when trying to advance. This allowed Barboza, after the half point, to put more determination in his offensives and start generating actions of real danger through combinations of power shots, finally managing in the seventh round to repeatedly rock Zorrilla.
Therefore, in the last rounds Zorrilla had lost on points and only a knockout was enough for him to avoid defeat, something he sought. Still, although answering one of his opponent’s attack with a straight right hand he hurt Barboza in the last round, something followed by exciting exchanges, Zorrilla was unable to reach his goal.
After the fight, Barboza pointed out that his next objective is to fight in a world championship or to face Teófimo López. Surely, the victory against another ranked fighter as Zorrilla will allow him to climb in the WBO super lightweight list, but even if Josh Taylor vacates his title after facing Jack Catterall, it will be difficult for Barboza to reach the first two positions of the ranking and secure the access to the world title match.
As for the clash against Lopez, this is a viable possibility with both being stablemates and seeming that Top Rank wants the matchup. In addition, the winner of the duel would surely become world title challenger along with Liam Paro if the WBO belt were left without an owner. Therefore, while they wait for the rematch Taylor-Catterall to take place once and for all, a bout Teófimo-Barboza may be the option that makes the most sense for both of them right now.
