Anoche, el peso supermedio cubano David Morrell 7(6KO)-0 continuó su arrollador avance hacia las grandes peleas con otra demoledora victoria sobre un adversario competente. Esta vez el púgil vencido fue el estadounidense Kalvin “Hot Sauce” Henderson 15(11KO)-2(1)-1, que padeció la primera derrota antes del límite de su carrera en el semifondo del evento de PBC Fulton-Román.
Con el objetivo del knockout estando claro, Morrell presionó a su adversario y no tardó en poner a prueba su encaje con durísimos golpes de poder, destacando sus zurdazos y sus ganchos de mano adelantada, con los que ya encerró a su contrincante en las cuerdas en el primer round y le atacó peligrosamente. Henderson trató de resistir como pudo y de lanzar algunos contragolpes, si bien Morrell, pese a que confió de más en sus bloqueos estático, no recibió a penas manos relevantes.
Aunque tenía mucha voluntad por intentar aguantar, en el tercer round Henderon finalmente se vio desbordado por los golpes de su oponente y, de espaldas a las cuerdas, fue golpeado por una temible y larguísima andanada de directos de izquierda y curvos diestros que perfectamente habrían podido llevar al tercer hombre a detener el combate. No fue así, y la pelea llegó al descanso y al cuarto asalto, en el que Morrell siguió castigando con calma hasta que Henderson fue estremecido duramente por ganchos diestros y el árbitro se convenció de que era necesario parar el combate.
Cuando un boxeador tiene menos de una decena de combates es inevitable pensar que podría ser demasiado pronto para hacerle enfrentarse a la cumbre de una división incluso si su rendimiento está resultando fantástico. De todos modos, hay buenos púgiles (como John Ryder) que han eludido ya flagrantemente pelear contra él y está claro que los oponentes por debajo del nivel del top 15 no están a la altura de Morrell, que tiene una formidable capacidad ofensiva y gran instinto de knockout, por lo que el cubano está emplazado a un decisivo paso adelante en el último tramo del año.
Seguramente ni su compañero de escuadra David Benavídez ni Canelo Álvarez (de quien teóricamente es aspirante obligatorio por poseer un cetro secundario WBA) serán sus oponentes este año, pero es muy posible que PBC le busque a continuación un adversario conocido y con prestigio ante el que pueda hacer una nueva declaración de intenciones respecto a su deseo de pelear contra la élite cuanto antes.

Last night, Cuban super middleweight David Morrell 7(6KO)-0 continued his advance to the big fights with another crushing victory over a competent opponent. This time the beaten fighter was the American Kalvin “Hot Sauce” Henderson 15(11KO)-2(1)-1, who suffered the first stoppage defeat of his career in the co-feature of the PBC event Fulton-Román.
With the objective of the knockout being clear, Morrell put pressure on his opponent and soon tested his chin with hard power shots, highlighting his straight lefts and his lead hooks, punches with which he already cornered his opponent on the ropes in the first round and attacked him very dangerously. Henderson tried to resist the best he could and throw some counterattacks, although Morrell, despite the fact that he relied too much on his static blocking, hardly received relevant hands.
Henderson put a lot of will trying to hold on, but in the third round was finally overwhelmed by his opponent’s punches and, with his back to the ropes, was hit by a fearsome and lengthy barrage of straight lefts and right hooks that should have made the third man stop the fight. However the fight continued and reached the fourth round, in which Morrell continued his calm and dangerous attack until Henderson was rocked hard by right hooks and the referee was convinced that the fight needed to be stopped.
When a boxer has less than a dozen fights it is inevitable to think that it might be too early to make him face the top of a division, even if his performances are turning out fantastic. Still, there are good fighters (such as John Ryder) who have already blatantly ducked him and it is clear that the rivals below the top 15 level are no match for Morrell, who has formidable offensive ability and great knockout instincts, so the Cuban is set to face a decisive step forward in the last stretch of the year.
Surely neither his teammate David Benavídez nor Canelo Álvarez (for whom he is theoretically a mandatory challenger due to a secondary WBA title) will be his opponents this year, but it is very possible that PBC will look for a well-known and prestigious rival for Morrell to make a new statement regarding his desire to fight against the elite as soon as possible.
