Preview: Joe Cordina will try to conquer the IBF super featherweight belt against Ogawa on Matchroom/DAZN evening

Many change dramatically their ratings of prospects based on the impression they had in their most recent fight. These kind of reactions often are profoundly misguided considering that developing fighters need to adjust various aspects of their boxing and that only with a variety of opponents, and usually several unconvincing performances, they shape their style.

The British Joe Cordina 14(8KO)-0 is an obvious example of this, since first, debuting after a good amateur career in which he was an Olympian, he was considered a great rising star, although some performances not excessively brilliant, especially his fight against Enrique Tinoco, made many discard him. Finally, his most recent wins, most notably his knockout over Joshuah Hernandez, made many fans suddenly have faith in him again.

In any case, after only fourteen fights, Cordina will have his first professional world championship this Saturday at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, United Kingdom, opportunity that could help him definitively establish himself as one of the most important figures in the current British boxing.

His opponent in the duel will be the IBF super featherweight world champion, the Japanese Kenichi Ogawa 26(18KO)-1(1)-1, a boxer who lost his first world belt due to a positive doping test for androstanediol, but four years later captured it again against Azinga Fuzile, who had a tactically flawed and disappointing performance.

Against an effective, tough and experienced but sometimes too expectant Ogawa, Cordina can be considered the favorite, although he enters the fight surrounded by a crucial question, which is not if he has the necessary qualities, but if he will know how to exploit them. In other words, Cordina’s tactical decisions has been inadequate in various fights, so on occasions, such as when he exchanged with boxers who were very strong but not technical, he did not shine and his potential was questioned.

However, Cordina has good punching technique, fluency in the use of combinations, precision and a lot of courage. For this reason, if he avoids making the same mistake as Fuzile, and with or without initiative has a good punch output, perhaps the local could achieve decisive successes over Ogawa, who often overthinks and allows his rivals to throw dangerous attacks. On the other hand, if Cordina hesitates and lets the Japanese use his best power shots, he could find himself in a situation that may not be as compromised as Fuzile (which is less powerful and less resistant), but still quite difficult.

As both have a similar size, are very willful and fight at mid-range, the clash could end up being action-packed, a scenario in which Cordina’s strengths and weaknesses may once again be shown: he could be hit with hard and avoidably punches due to his eagerness to not being outdone in exchanges, but his skill finding openings and combining shots and his speed could once again be crucial.

Undercard
When the fight week was reached, there were only two confirmed bouts on the main card. One was the European super featherweight championship between Belgian-Kyrgyz titlist Faroukh Kourbanov 19(3KO)-3 and British challenger Zelfa “Brown Flash” Barrett 27(16KO)-1, a match that is both a test and an unofficial eliminator.

The objective of the fight for Matchroom is, on the one hand, to measure Barrett’s evolution since his fight against Kiko Martínez putting him against a strong, competent and seasoned pressure boxer. On the other, the company wants to compare the performance of the Briton against a boxer who lost by close margin against Joe Cordina, to whom Barrett could perhaps fight if he comes out with his arm raised.

The other confirmed clash was the fourth professional fight for Australian featherweight prospect Skye Nicolson 3(0KO)-0, who will face her most demanding fight to date against Uruguayan former world champion Gabriela Bouvier 15(3KO)-10(3)-1. In any case, although Bouvier is a willful boxer with some controversial defeats, she hasn’t had a significant win since 2014, so it is considered unlikely that she will be able to defeat Nicolson, who is showing good control of the distance and remarkable effectiveness.

Finally, although Matchroom Boxing has not announced the full card yet, it has been reported that the event would also include former European champion Gamal Yafai 18(10KO)-2 (against an opponent to be confirmed) and the very promising super lightweight Dalton Smith 10(8KO)-0, who will have his second fight of the year against the Argentinian super featherweight Mauro Perouene 14(7KO)-5(1)-1.

The main card of the event Ogawa-Cordina will be broadcast on DAZN on Saturday from 7:00 p.m. local time, 2:00 p.m. ET / 11:00 a.m. PT.
