T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, Estados Unidos.

Dmitriy Bivol avoided the robbery of the judges with an extraordinary performance against Canelo Álvarez

T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, USA. WBA world light heavyweight championship. Bivol’s ninth defense.

The most surprising thing about the fight was not that the underrated Russian Dmitriy Bivol 20(11KO)-0 was superior to the Mexican Saúl «Canelo» Álvarez 57(39KO)-2-2, but that the judges recognized it, something that seemed practically impossible given the current circumstances. In any case, it must be said that Tim Cheatham, Dave Moretti and Steve Weisfeld tried to steal the victory from Bivol, who was losing in the official cards 4-0 going into the fifth round and who, at the end of the ninth, needed to win the last three rounds to avoid the draw.

All in all, although the triple 115-113 given by the judges was absurd and corrupt considering that the consensus is that Canelo only captured two or three rounds, Bivol achieved victory thanks to an extraordinary performance in which he not only imposed his prowess, but at times he neutralized, battered and frustrated who many consider to be number 1 pound for pound.

Initially, using very well his blocks and steps back, Bivol eluded the danger of Canelo’s hooks while coming in with his jabs and short combinations. At times, Álvarez unleashed powerful hooks with Bivol on the ropes, but the Russian came out of this position very quickly and later threw his one-twos and jabs with good timing, surprising his rival and making him miss shots. The champion made the mistake of keeping his feet fixed at certain points in the first stretch, allowing Canelo to get into the short-mid distance and land his hooks and uppercuts, but the quick one-two, two-one and one- two-one from Bivol were connecting much clearer and more frequently than the punches of Canelo’s last rivals.

On the other hand, although many analysts, especially some Americans ones, thought that Bivol would cower in fear at the first strong blow received or that his chin would break in a heartbeat, the boxer resisted Canelo’s attacks well with his blocks and not even the hardest uppercuts from the Mexican hurt him. What’s more, Bivol was making Canelo uncomfortable in the ring, something that hadn’t happened to him for a long time. When Álvarez attacked, he wasted energy hitting the arms, while Bivol’s counterattacks took the challenger to the ropes and hit him with good combinations of straight punches.

On several occasions, Canelo stood still in the ropes, waiting for his opponent to attack to counter him, but the intelligent Bivol did not fall into the trap, since he waited attentively until he found the moment to be able to touch with his jab and get out without being hit. Thus, as the different solutions sought by Canelo were not giving decisive results, his position on the impartial scorecards was very compromised after the half point. It was because he was in such an unfavorable situation that in the eighth round Álvarez tried to attack more aggressively, but his offensives were contained and Bivol subsequently cornered Canelo on the ropes with his straight shots, frustrating the Mexican.

In the ninth round Canelo had some success working at close range with some continuity with his hooks down, but in the tenth round Bivol shook off the pressure and cornered Canelo, against whom he again performed his low-risk attacks with his jabs. Finally sealing his victory, in the final stretch Bivol even stood up in the close distance, resisted his opponent’s attacks without flinching and hit him with his formidable combinations.

For his use of his legs, for his management of the pressure, for his precision and intelligence in his selection of attacks and punches and for his general ability, highlighting the one-two-one combinations with which he repeatedly surprised Canelo, Bivol proved that he is a boxer of the highest level. Some point out that moving up in weight was what prevented Álvarez from winning, but Bivol is no bigger than Callum Smith or Caleb Plant, and if the Russian-Kyrgyz prevailed he did so using his skill against a boxer who was technically defeated despite being solid favorite in the betting odds.

Now Canelo’s plan is to face Bivol in an immediate rematch, in which the judges will presumably apply more thoroughly to not allow the champion to retain his belt again. But Bivol has beaten the arguably pound-for-pound No. 1 in the world and at times even made it look easy, which should change his prestige forever.
