Kane Gardner won on points against Marios Matamba in an interesting and even match

The evening organized by Kynoch Boxing and Probellum ended with an even and interesting fight between the Congolese Marios “Son of SSK” Matamba 12(10KO)-2 and the local “Sugar” Kane Gardner 14(7KO)-2. However, despite being a highly contested match, it seemed that Matamba did enough to deserve the victory, something that was even pointed out in the broadcast of the event (one of the analysts had an accurate 96-94 in his favor), although the judge-referee gave the victory to Gardner with a score of 94-96.

In the opening round Matamba effectively used his lead hand to control actions through jabs and hooks up and down, although in the second Gardner advanced and provoked exchanges, managing in one of them to rock his opponent with a hard left hook. In a new oscillation, Matamba decided in the third episode to press, using well his combinations of hooks, but Gardner insisted again in the fourth round taking the initiative and throwing good straight punches. So, it was an even and disputed fight between two boxers who wanted the victory.

However, Matamba seemed to be the superior boxer by a small margin, as his punches were more clear, his defense was slightly more careful and his timing was more appropriate. In any case, Gardner resolutely threw his one-two-hooks in the middle distance and good hooks and uppercuts at close range, so although Matamba’s explosiveness and precise right hand counters might have made the difference at times, the clash was highly contested.

Given that when Gardner advanced his punching frequency could be decisive, Matamba made a mistake allowing his opponent to have the initiative for prolonged periods, even more so taking into account that the Congolese was dangerous attacking. This was clearly evident in the seventh and eighth rounds, since in the first of these rounds Gardner had better results pressing his rival against the ropes and in the second Matamba connected the clearest hands moving forward and throwing his fists with good pace.

Finally, in a moment when the fight could go one way or the other, Matamba had two good last rounds that seemed crucial, as he attacked with good straight right hands and left hooks down, landed counters and jabs without initiative and was more skillful with the hooks in exchanges. However, the referee, who in the fight allowed Gardner to hit between clinches for long period without separating the fighters, considered that the local had to come out with his arm raised.

Although the verdict can be questioned, the fact is that it was a good fight in which both had determination and success and in which both could have done more to win the bout: when they threw offensives with determination, they won the rounds, something that did not happen when they were under sustained attacks. Be that as it may, the two boxers have proven to be capable fighters in great shape that could obtain significant victories in the future.
