El debate sobre si el enfrentamiento entre Katie Taylor 20(6KO)-0 y Amanda Serrano 42(30KO)-1-1 es el mayor duelo femenino de la historia está encarándose de una manera inadecuada. La mayoría de quienes están centrados en esta discusión tratan de hacer comparativas entre los logros de Taylor y Serrano y otras insignes boxeadoras que se han enfrentado en el pasado. Con todo, la cuestión central no es si la irlandesa y la puertorriqueña tienen mayores éxitos o mejor nivel que otras grandes que las precedieron, sino que son en opinión de muchos la número 1 y la número 2 libra por libra en una era en la que el boxeo femenino ha alcanzado su punto más alto en la historia.
Es decir, independientemente de si otras boxeadoras han parecido superiores, más carismáticas o merecieron cualquier otro adjetivo positivo, el hecho es que nunca se le había prestado tanta atención como se le presta ahora al pugilismo femenino y Taylor y Serrano son quizás las dos figuras más reconocibles de dicho boxeo. Por ello, y habiendo verdadera expectación e interés respecto al duelo entre ambas y no mera curiosidad como sucedió en otro tiempo, es indudable que por magnitud y atención puede ser considerado el mayor combate femenino que se ha producido hasta ahora.
Ante tal posición, en la cual hagan lo que hagan sobre el ring su enfrentamiento será recordado como un capítulo importante para el boxeo femenino, ahora Taylor y Serrano tendrán la tarea de estar a la altura de las circunstancias, algo que parecen perfectamente capaces de lograr. Ambas son boxeadoras muy activas, agresivas, con buen manejo de los golpes de poder y que rara vez se ven en peleas aburridas, por lo que poniéndose frente a frente es de suponer que ofrecerán un buen espectáculo.
A muchos les ha sorprendido, pero por el momento Serrano parte como favorita en las casas de apuestas. Esto tiene una explicación muy simple, puesto que, por un lado, Serrano no ha tenido nunca una victoria controvertida o tan estrecha como para que llegara a ser cuestionable, mientras que Taylor tuvo sus polémicas ante Persoon, su triunfo por la mínima ante Natasha Jonas y, por ejemplo, su trabajada victoria ante Linardatou (un juez dio 96-94 para Taylor). Algunos señalan que Taylor tiene más combates ante rivales de calidad y que ello justifica esos resultados estrechos, algo que puede ser cierto, pero que no debe llevar a pasar por alto que Serrano tiene enfrentamientos de calibre ante Daniela Bermúdez, Yazmín Rivas, Yamileth Mercado, etc.
Por otro lado, la condición de favorita de la boricua tiene que ver también con el estilo y las características de ambas, ya que Serrano suele tener una superior frecuencia de golpeo, un trabajo ofensivo más continuado y feroz, más explosividad y más pegada. Es decir, si Serrano ha vencido siempre con claridad a sus oponentes es debido a que casi siempre intenta abrumarlas con sus ofensivas y, a diferencia de Taylor, no suele perder tiempo en prolongados reposicionamientos y estudios de sus rivales que no siempre dan resultado para decantar los asaltos.
No obstante, entre considerar a Serrano favorita y dar por sentado que ganará hay una diferencia abismal, dado que está ante la mayor rival de su carrera y Taylor es una boxeadora con unas eficaces, compactas y bien repartidas combinaciones que, combinándose con sus variadas cualidades técnicas, la hacen muy difícil de superar. Así que parece que el combate tendría que estar muy contendido y posiblemente se resuelva en una igualada decisión.
La clave para el combate estará para la zurda Serrano en que ésta pueda usar su velocidad de manos y sus reflejos para anticiparse ya sea presionando o boxeando sin iniciativa, dado que han sido las oponentes que se han adelantado a Taylor en sus acciones las que más problemas le han generado. En cuanto a Taylor, ésta necesita usar su control del ring y su astucia para intentar enfriar el combate si las embestidas de Serrano se suceden con intensidad, escoger con inteligencia sus contragolpes y, en los intercambios que tarde o temprano se producirán, aprovechar con astucia su fortaleza ante una adversaria acostumbrada a pugnar ante oponentes más pequeñas que la cuádruple monarca unificada del peso ligero (Serrano es campeona del peso pluma).
Si Serrano combate con mucha insistencia al ataque, no dejándose frenar por los errores o los golpes recibidos, y aprovecha sus golpes al torso tendrá un buena opción de victoria que en cambio resultaría mucho más complicada si deja que Taylor la frene con sus entradas y salidas, que podrían desembocar en un duelo embarrado y con clinches en el que los jueces podrían valorar más las precisas acciones escogidas de la irlandesa. En cualquier caso, en uno u otro escenario, el combate debería resultar emocionante y, con la probable polémica o sin ella, de él saldrá una campeona indiscutida del peso ligero que además será para muchos la indiscutida número 1 libra por libra del boxeo femenino.

The debate over whether the fight between Katie Taylor 20(6KO)-0 and Amanda Serrano 42(30KO)-1-1 is the biggest female bout in history is being focused in the wrong way. Many try to make comparisons between the achievements of Taylor and Serrano and other distinguished boxers who have clashed in the past. However, the central aspect is not whether the Irish and the Puerto Rican are more successful or better than other great boxers that preceded them, but that they are in the opinion of many the number 1 and the number 2 pound for pound in an era in which female boxing has reached its highest point in history.
Regardless of whether other female boxers have seemed superior, more charismatic or deserving of any other positive adjective, the fact is that female boxing has never been given as much attention as it now receives and Taylor and Serrano are perhaps the two most recognizable names in said boxing. For this reason, and existing real expectation and interest regarding the duel between the two and not mere curiosity as happened in another time, there is no doubt that by magnitude and attention it can be considered the greatest female fight that has occurred so far.
In such position, in which whatever they do in the ring their confrontation will be remembered as an important chapter for female boxing, now Taylor and Serrano will have the task of rising to the occasion, something they seem perfectly capable of achieving. Both are very active, aggressive boxers, with good use of the power punches and who rarely are in boring fights, so facing each other, it is assumed that they will offer a great show.
Despite it has surprised many, for the moment Serrano is favorite in the betting odds. This has a very simple explanation, since, on the one hand, Serrano has never had a controversial victory or so close as to be questionable, while Taylor had his controversies against Persoon, his win by narrow margin against Natasha Jonas and, for example, his hard-fought victory against Linardatou (a judge scored it 96-94 for Taylor). Some point out that Taylor has more fights against quality opposition and that justifies these narrow results, something that may be true but should not lead us to overlook the fact that Serrano has had confrontations against high-level boxers as Daniela Bermúdez, Yazmín Rivas, Yamileth Mercado, etc.
On the other hand, the Puerto Rican is favorite also due the style and characteristics of both boxers, since Serrano usually has a higher punching rate, a more continuous and fierce offensive work, more explosiveness and more punch. Serrano has always clearly beaten his opponents because she almost always tries to overwhelm them with her offensives and, unlike Taylor, she does not usually waste many minutes repositioning and studying her rival.
However, there is a huge difference between considering Serrano the favorite and assuming that she will win, since she is facing the best rival of her career and Taylor is a boxer with effective, compact and well-distributed combinations that, combined with her varied technical qualities, make her very difficult to overcome. So it looks like the match would be highly contested and possibly will be resolved in a close decision.
The keys to victory for the southpaw Serrano seem her hand speed and her reflexes, virtues she needs to use to anticipate her rival either by pressing or boxing without initiative, since the opponents who have fought in this way are the ones who most problems have caused to Taylor. As for the Irish, she needs to use her control of the ring and her cunning to try to cool down the fight if Serrano’s attacks are intense and persistent, choose her counterattacks intelligently and, in the exchanges that will take place sooner or later, take advantage appropriately of her strength against an opponent accustomed to fighting opponents smaller than the unified lightweight champion (Serrano is a featherweight titlist).
If Serrano fights with a lot of insistence on the attack, not letting herself be stopped by mistakes or the blows received, and takes advantage of her punches to the body, she will have a good chance of victory. On the other hand, the bout would be much more complicated if she lets Taylor use her boxing coming in and out, which could lead to a messy duel with clinches in which the judges could value more the precise punching of the Irish. In any case, in one or another scenario, the fight should be exciting and, with or without the probable controversy, from it will emerge an undisputed lightweight champion who will also be for many the undisputed number 1 pound for pound in female boxing.
