Es inevitable que muchos sientan recelo a la hora de prestar atención a un combate que tiene en juego un cinturón IBO. Más allá de la sensación de que quienes pelean por este tipo de títulos tienen algo que ocultar sobre su nivel, la IBO, organismo no reconocido por las cuatro organizaciones oficiales del boxeo mundial (WBC, WBA, WBO e IBF), está haciendo todo lo posible por intentar convertirse en el quinto organismo oficial, algo que simplemente sería una atrocidad que tiraría aún más al barro al boxeo.
De todos modos, aunque los promotores que pagan por este tipo de cinturones merecen duras críticas por contribuir a la destrucción del pugilismo profesional, y dejando de lado que el cinturón en juego (el “mundial IBO”) no vale ni siquiera como pisapapeles, este sábado en el Palasport de Civitavecchia, Italia, se producirá un duelo que tiene interés. En él, el peso superpluma italiano Michael Magnesi 20(12KO)-0 afrontará un paso adelante en su carrera ante el mexicano Dennis “Martillo” Contreras 24(22KO)-11(2)-1, debiéndose destacar primeramente que el récord de este último es muy engañoso.
Dado que es un boxeador competente y resistente, en el intervalo de cuatro años Contreras fue llamado constantemente como piedra de toque para púgiles con aspiraciones, por lo que su récord parcial terminó en un nada positivo 1-8-1. Sin embargo, algunas de sus derrotas llegaron ante boxeadores como el titular mundial Emanuel Navarrete, el excampeón Hugo Ruiz o el peligroso Edivaldo Ortega, mientras que otros tropiezos fueron ajustados o cuestionables (como ante Ornelas y Frías). Por otro lado, esta experiencia le valió a Contreras para, desde 2019, entrar en una buena racha de cuatro triunfos culminada con su victoria más importante: un KOT sobre el hábil cubano Hairon Socarras en 2021.
De todos modos, en su último combate, cuando intentaba mejorar su clasificación mundial ante el valentísimo “Corazón” Júarez, Contreras sufrió una derrota por decisión, en una dura batalla, que cortó nuevamente su racha y que le ha valido esta llamada de Magnesi. Y es que el equipo del italiano, que llega de vencer en el tercer round a un Eugene Lagos que también fue batido en tres asaltos por el propio Juárez, considera en una comparativa indirecta que respecto a sus anteriores rivales Contreras es un paso adelante, pero uno que, sobre el papel, el púgil invicto puede superar.
Magnesi encadena siete victorias antes del límite, algunas de ellas ante oponentes bastante competentes o en buena racha, por lo que tiene la moral muy alta y un posicionamiento mundial como 10º IBF y 15º WBC superpluma. Además su boxeo está resultando crecientemente contundente y eficaz, acortando la distancia rápido y decidido para intentar causar daños determinantes con sus golpes de poder. Así, siendo más rápido que Contreras y viniendo éste de ser derrotado por la presión de Juárez, se considera que un Magnesi más explosivo podría lograr neutralizar o al menos superar al visitante si se anticipa ofensivamente.
No obstante, Contreras es un boxeador fogueado, aguerrido, fuerte y con un 92% de sus triunfos por knockout, de modo que, teóricamente, como mínimo debería ofrecer decidida resistencia y una pelea entretenida ante Magnesi, que pese a sus posibilidades de victoria correría un riesgo evidente si se vuelca al ataque sin cautela esperando abrumar con su empuje.

Inevitably, many are wary of paying attention to a match that has an IBO belt on the line. Beyond the feeling that those who fight for this type of titles have something to hide about their levels, the IBO, a sanctioning body not recognized by the four official world boxing organizations (WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF), is doing everything possible trying to become the fifth official body, something that would simply be an atrocity that would further throw boxing into the mud.
In any case, although the promoters who pay for these types of belts deserve harsh criticism for contributing to the destruction of professional boxing, and leaving aside that the belt at stake (the «IBO world title») is not even worth as paperweight, this Saturday at the Palasport in Civitavecchia, Italy, there will be a duel that has some interest. In it, the Italian super featherweight Michael Magnesi 20(12KO)-0 will face a step forward in his career against the Mexican Dennis «Martillo» Contreras 24(22KO)-11(2)-1.
Firstly, it should be noted that Contreras’ record is misleading. Since he is a competent and resistant boxer, in the interval of four years Contreras was constantly called as opponent for fighters with aspirations, so his partial record ended up being 1-8-1. However, some of his losses came against rivals like world titleholder Emanuel Navarrete, former champion Hugo Ruiz or the dangerous Edivaldo Ortega, while other setbacks were close or questionable (such as against Ornelas and Frias). On the other hand, this experience served Contreras to enter a good streak of four wins from 2019, culminated in his most important victory: a TKO over the skillful Cuban Hairon Socarras in 2021.
Anyway, in his last fight, when he was trying to improve his world ranking against the brave “Corazón” Júarez, Contreras suffered a decision loss, in a tough battle, that cut his streak again and that has meant being called as a rival of Magnesi. The team of the Italian fighter, who comes from beating in the third round Eugene Lagos (he was defeated in three rounds too by Juarez), considers in an indirect comparison that Contreras is a step forward compared to his previous rivals, but one that, on paper, is not above the level of the undefeated fighter.
Magnesi has chained seven stoppage victories, some of them against quite competent opponents, so he has very high morale and a world position as 10th IBF and 15th WBC at super featherweight. In addition, his boxing is becoming increasingly forceful and effective, closing the distance quickly and with determination to try to cause decisive damage with his power shots. Thus, and being faster than Contreras, who comes from being beaten by the pressure from Juárez, it is considered that the explosive Magnesi could manage to neutralize or at least defeat the visitor if he anticipates offensively.
However, Contreras is a seasoned, strong boxer with 92% of his wins by knockout, so that, theoretically, at least he should offer tough resistance and an entertaining fight against Magnesi, who despite his chances of victory would assume an obvious risk if he carelessly charges into attack trying to overwhelm his opponent.
