The best fights of the weekend (31-2/3-4/2022)

Daniel Pi
@BastionBoxing

After a weekend full of activity, and before another one that will also have many relevant fights, boxing will have a somewhat more relaxed week. In any case, with a couple of important evenings, several female world championships, continental championships and some interesting matches, we won’t be bored in the next few days.

Thursday March 31
Despite the obstacles that Russian boxers have at the moment, boxing in their country has not stopped, so this Thursday, at the Basket Hall in Krasnodar, Russia, the promotional company Angels – A will organize an event televised by Match Tv (main card) and Boets Tv (full evening) which will feature three notable matches. In one, eliminator participant Ruslan Fayfer 27(18KO)-3(2)-1 will fight in a rematch at heavyweight against prospect Shigabudin Aliev 9(6KO)-0-1, against whom he drew in October. In another, the capable super welterweight Sergei Vorobev 16(11KO)-1 will have his second fight in this month against the Uzbek, with good amateur career, Ulugbek Sobirov 11(6KO)-1. Finally, the undefeated lightweight Alexander Devyatov 12(11KO)-0 will face his most demanding test to date against the hardened Evgeny Smirnov 13(3KO)-2(1)-3, who drew against the Olympian Aram Avagyan and against the WBO 9th Ruslan Kamilov.

Friday, April 1
Friday’s biggest event will be the one organized by Matchroom Boxing and broadcasted by DAZN from Spain. In this evening Sandor Martín, top 5 WBA and WBC at super lightweight, will try to stay close to a great opportunity by facing the Mexican José Félix Jr. Among other support bouts, Olympian Samuel Carmona will face former world title challenger Joel Córdova and former champion Jorgelina Guanini will fight undefeated Stevi Levy. Read more following the link.

Finally, on this day the vacant European Union lightweight belt will be at stake, something that doesn’t happen since March 2019! The stagnation regarding this championship in a contested division (an example of the EBU’s inability and goings-on) will come to an end at the hands of veteran Italian Emiliano «Tizzo» Marsili 40(15KO)-0-1 and Spaniard Frank “La Ley” Urquiaga 16(1KO)-2-1, who will clash at the Palazzetto dello Sport in Santa Marinella, Italy, broadcasted through YouTube.
There is an obvious interest in protecting Marsili’s unbeaten record, so, as the visitor does not have a great punch, it will be difficult for Urquiaga to win the decision. However, this is the most difficult fight Marsili has had in over half a decade, and he will have to be very careful with Urquiaga’s ring intelligence, precision and tactical management.

In theory, an EU championship for the vacant super middleweight belt should have taken place last week in France between local Gustave Tamba 16(10KO)-1 and Italian-Romanian Dragan Lepei 20(14KO)-4(2)-2, although the bout didn’t happen and some media stated that the fight had been postponed for a week until this Friday. The EBU has not updated its official information and still has the championship dated for last week. In any case, if the fight does take place, the efficient Tamba will be the favorite to beat the visitor Lepei, boxer with some important victories (Bauderlique) and meritorious performances (De Carolis) but who comes to the fight with two defeats in his last three fights.

These other fights will also take place on Friday:
-At the Gimnasio Germán Evers in Mazatlán, México, broadcast on Facebook, a well-matched super bantamweight bout will take place between undefeated prospect Jesús “Veneno” Arechiga 15(11KO)-0 and José Armando “El Pamba” Valdés 10(4KO)-5(2)-1, who comes from defeating the dangerous Edwin Palomares.
-At The Dome at the Ballpark in Rosemont, United States, Irish Olympian Joseph “Mighty” Ward 6(3KO)-1 will have his first 8-round bout at light heavyweight against Mexican Óscar Riojas 28(16KO )-14(4)-1, who lasted every round against prospect Diego Pacheco and who was defeated in the ninth round by dangerous Vladimir Shishkin.

Saturday, April 2
On this day, a new card of Boxxer and Sky Sports stands out, event that will have a WBO female middleweight world championship as its main event. In it Savannah Marshall will prepare for the fight for the undisputed crown against Claressa Shields fighting former champion Femke Hermans. The co-feature will be a welterweight fight between Florian Marku and former British champion Chris Jenkins. Read more following the link.

The Marshall-Hermans will not be the only female world championship on this day, as two others will take place in Mexico. One of them, which will be broadcast on ESPN+ from the BUAP Arena in Puebla, will be the WBC bantamweight championship between the title holder Yulihan Luna Ávila 22(4KO)-3-1 and the challenger Mayeli Flores 8(3KO)- 0-1. This will be the most difficult duel faced by the champion since her wide victory against Mariana «Barbie» Juárez, as Flores, despite her limited number of fights, has proven to be a very capable fighter, drawing against the good contender Diana Laura Fernández and knocking out Zulina Muñoz.

The other will take place at the Gimnasio Rodrigo M. Quevedo in Chihuahua, broadcast by Tv Azteca, and in it the WBC super bantamweight champion, the Mexican Yamileth «Yeimi» Mercado 18(5KO)-3, will try to return to the winning ways (after her defeat at featherweight against Amanda Serrano) fighting her compatriot Isis “La Emperatriz” Vargas 9(3KO)-3, who has suffered two of her losses by split decision and against former champions such as Zulina Muñoz and Irma Garcia.

As for championship duels, there will be also a European Union middleweight championship from the InterContinental Hotel in Vienna, Austria, between the local challenger Marcos Nader 23(5KO)-1-1 and the German champion, of Armenian origin, Marten Arsumanjan 11(5KO)-1(1)-2. Regardless of the title at stake, it should be noted that Nader is positioned as 5th IBF and very close to an eliminator, so this fight will be a decisive test in which try to strengthen his aspirations or see them collapse. Arsumanjan is a complicated boxer, who defeated by upset the then UE titleholder Bjoern Schicke and who comes from a draw against the strong and undefeated Thomas Piccirillo.

In this Saturday also stands out the participation of an Olympic gold medalist, the Russian Albert «AL BA» Batyrgaziev 5(5KO)-0, who will face a test to his finishing ability against the tough Russian-Azeri Heybatulla Hajialiyev 8(3KO)-2-1, bout which will take place at the USC Krylia Sovetov stadium in Moscow, Russia. So far Batyrgazyev has neutralized and beaten all his opponents by stoppage, so it has been decided to place him against a boxer without defeats by KO, who has suffered his setbacks against former ranked boxers as Pavel Malikov and Georgii Chelokhsaev, who drew against the former world challenger Denis Shafikov and who in his most recent fight achieved a meritorious victory.

Finally, on Saturday these other clashes can be mentioned:
-In the Arena of La Paz, Mexico, there will be an evening broadcast by Canal Space in which will participate the three-time world super flyweight challenger Israel González 27(11KO)-4(1)-1, fighter who reached the final bell against “ Chocolatito” González and that against Misael Gracia 15(10KO)-2(1)-2 will try to add his second consecutive victory since a disputed draw against José “Chiquiro” Martínez.
-At the Ford Community Center in Dearborn, United States, the distinguished light heavyweight prospect Ali Izmailov 7(5KO)-0 will have his second fight of the year against the Chilean Abraham Tebes 7(3KO)-0, who last season beat an undefeated boxer with extensive amateur experience, Rafayel Simonyan.
-At the Sugar Baby Rojas Coliseum in Barranquilla, Colombia, broadcast by ESPN Knockout, former world challenger Dewayne Beamon 21(15KO)-4(1)-2, who generated difficulties to “El Gallo” Estrada, will try to get closer to the super flyweight top 15 WBC capturing a minor title against local Pablo Carrillo 26(17KO)-8(1)-1.
-At the Pabellón de Esgrima del Centro Olímpico of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the prospect Francis Villar 15(10KO)-0 will face an experience acquisition bout, and will try to enter the WBA lightweight top 15, fighting for a minor belt against the hardened Nicaraguan Oliver Flores 30(19KO)-4(2)-2, who fought in a world championshisp and who lost on points against «El Títere» Vázquez in his last match.
-At the Gurranabraher Hall in Cork, Ireland, the Dominican Olympian Rohan “El Rayo” Polanco 6(3KO)-0 will face the Mexican Francisco Mercado 6(2KO)-1(1), better known for his very controversial victory against Fabián Maidana.
