Desde sus primeros pasos en el boxeo de pago resultó evidente que el bronce olímpico y oro mundial irlandés Michael Conlan 16(8KO)-0 llegaría a combatir en la parte alta de la división en la que militase. Esto no significa que haya deslumbrado con un boxeo arrollador o que no haya perdido asaltos, ya que, al contrario, ha tenido un avance bueno pero no perfecto. Sin embargo, contando con el apoyo de Top Rank detrás de él, una muy buena frecuencia de combates, un buen bagaje amateur y cualidades como fuerza, astucia, solidez y habilidad, era improbable que no llegase a alcanzar las pruebas de fuego en la cumbre.
Su primer test decisivo fue quizás el choque que sostuvo en agosto contra el excampeón TJ Doheny, a quien derribó y venció por clara decisión unánime, si bien este sábado se enfrentará a un boxeador en mejor estado que Doheny y con mayores dimensiones y al que, por primera vez, se enfrentará fuera del paraguas de su promotora. Y es que este sábado Conlan peleará en una velada de Matchroom Boxing desde el Nottingham Arena de Nottingham, Reino Unido, contra el púgil de la compañía Leigh “Leigh-thal” Wood 25(15KO)-2(1), que ha logrado sus seis últimos triunfos por knockout, que sólo ha sufrido una derrota reciente (mayoritaria y ante “Jazza” Dickens) y que llega de lucir ante el chino Can Xu.
Este enfrentamiento será, además, una eliminatoria WBA del peso pluma, puesto que la Asociación, por su proceso de reducción de campeones, aseguró que el ganador del Wood-Conlan se mediría como aspirante obligatorio a Leo Santa Cruz. No obstante, más allá de que la WBA cumpla esta promesa, ambos boxeadores saben que en general sus máximas aspiraciones sólo se mantendrán en pie si ganan este combate, hablando por ejemplo Conlan de que en caso de triunfo Santa Cruz no será su única gran posibilidad.
Dado que Can Xu estaba bastante sobrevalorado, la buena victoria de Wood sobre él ha hecho que muchos hayan trasladado la sobrevaloración del chino al británico. Por otro lado, es justo decir también que Conlan ha ido ganando cada vez con menor diferencia según el nivel de su oposición ha aumentado (se debe recordar su ajustado triunfo mayoritario contra Ionut Baluta) y que no tiene una gran pegada (50% de knockouts). Así, aunque en otras circunstancias Conlan sería claro favorito, a día de hoy lo es con un margen muy escaso.
De todos modos, peleando como visitante en una velada de una promotora rival y ante un púgil en gran estado, es significativo que Conlan siga estando por delante en las apuestas. Esto es debido a que es un boxeador con destreza con los golpes aislados, con un buen jab, eficaces contragolpes con su mano adelantada y que tanto posee recursos defensivos como una adecuada gestión de los golpes de poder para impresionar a los jueces, destacando entre todo ello además unos formidables hooks al torso. Por ello, y siendo bueno su encaje, se supone que ante un Wood de estilo contragolpeador, menos fuerte y que tiene destreza y agilidad pero cierta simpleza en su planteamiento táctico podría lograr decantar el choque.
En principio, si Wood quisiese tomar riesgos, se mantuviese en el centro del ring y buscase clinches para intentar cansar a su rival (como hizo ante Xu), los golpes al cuerpo de Conlan, su firmeza y su precisión podrían ser decisivos. Por otro lado, en larga Wood tendría mejores opciones con su movilidad y velocidad, si bien por ahora nadie ha anulado totalmente a Conlan combatiendo con espacios debido a su buen timing y reflejos.
De ese modo, y no contando Wood con el ritmo y la agresividad de Baluta, no parece que el triunfo del británico sea el resultado más probable a pesar de que sí es muy posible que ofrezca un duelo contendido e igualado. Con todo, dado que Conlan pelea como visitante ante un rival astuto con su selección de golpes y muy confiado, si el irlandés no logra generar daños decisivos con sus puños al torso y va a una decisión de los jueces necesitará haber sostenido una cadencia de golpeo consistente y reducir los momentos de ineficacia que padece si quiere evitar que lo que podría ser un enfrentamiento disputado se convierta en un duro revés a la persecución de sus objetivos.

From his first steps in the paid ranks it was evident that the Irish Olympic bronze medalist, and world gold medalist, Michael Conlan 16(8KO)-0 would end up fighting at the top of the division he chose. This does not mean that he has overwhelmed all his opponents with his boxing or that he has not lost rounds, since he has had a good but not perfect advance. However, with the support of Top Rank behind him, a very good frequency of fights, a great amateur background and qualities such as strength, cunning, boxing solidity and skill, it was unlikely that he would not reach the fights at the top.
His first decisive test was perhaps the clash he had in August against former champion TJ Doheny, whom he knocked down and defeated by a clear unanimous decision, although this Saturday he will face a boxer bigger and in better shape than Doheny and he will do so, for the first time, outside the protection of his promoter. Conlan will fight in an evening of Matchroom Boxing from the Nottingham Arena in Nottingham, United Kingdom, against the boxer of the company Leigh «Leigh-thal» Wood 25(15KO)-2(1), who has obtained his last six wins by knockout, who has only suffered a recent defeat (by majority decision and against «Jazza» Dickens) and who shined in his most recent bout against the Chinese Can Xu.
This confrontation will also be a WBA featherweight eliminator, since the Association, due to its process of reducing champions, assured that the winner of the Wood-Conlan would be mandatory challenger for Leo Santa Cruz. However, beyond the decisions of the WBA, both boxers know that their important aspirations will only remain standing if they win this fight, and for example Conlan has stated that, in case of victory, Santa Cruz will not be his only great option.
As Can Xu was quite overrated, Wood’s big win over him has caused that many has transfered the overvaluation from the Chinese to the British. On the other hand, it is also fair to say that Conlan has been winning by shorter margins as the level of his opposition has increased (he won narrowly against Ionut Baluta) and that he does not have a great punch (50% knockout ratio). Thus, although in other circumstances Conlan would be a clear favourite, today he is so by a very small difference.
Still, fighting on the road at a rival promotion fight card and against a fighter in great shape, it’s significant that Conlan remains ahead in the betting odds. This is due to the fact that he is a precise boxer with a good jab, effective counterpunches with his lead hand and both defensive resources and great management of power shots to impress the judges, standing out among all of this too his excellent hooks to the body. For this reason, and as his chin is good, it is assumed that against a boxer like Wood, with a counterpuncher style, less strong and who has ability and agility but a certain simplicity in his tactical approach, he could manage to win the match.
In principle, if Wood wanted to take risks, stay in the center of the ring and look for clinches to try to tire his rival (as he did against Xu), Conlan’s body shots, his firmness and his precision could be decisive. On the other hand, at long range Wood will have better options with his mobility and speed, although so far no one has completely annulled Conlan fighting with spaces due to his good timing and reflexes.
In this way, and as Wood does not possess Baluta’s rhythm and aggressiveness, it does not seem that victory is the most likely result for the English despite the fact that it is very possible that he will generate a contested and even duel. Still, as Conlan is fighting on the road against an opponent astute with his selection of shots and very confident, if the Irishman fails to decisively hurt his rival with his body punches and reaches a decision of the judges he will need to sustain a consistent hitting rate, and reduce the moments of inefficiency that he suffers, if he wants to prevent a potentially disputed clash turning into a setback to his aspirations.
