Por lo general, cuando se dice que un boxeador ha padecido una derrota por sorpresa se refiere a que simplemente ha sido derrotado cuando era favorito, y en la mayoría de casos pese al tropiezo trató de ofrecer lo mejor de sí antes de sucumbir.
Con todo, en el caso del estadounidense Chris “Primetime” Colbert 16(6KO)-1 va mucho más allá de esto. Y es que no sólo fue vencido por un remplazo tardío sin experiencia en la cumbre y que estaba en las cotas de apuesta a 14 euros de su rival como el dominicano Héctor Luis “Androide” García 15(10KO)-0, sino que la derrota de Colbert llegó además con una actuación nefasta por su parte en la que fue completamente aplastado pese a ser considerado una de las mayores promesas del peso superpluma actual. Dicho esto, no se le debe quitar mérito tampoco a la actuación de García, que atacó con gran cadencia, derribó a su rival y le vapuleó hasta lograr justas tarjetas de 119-108 y doble 118-109.
Sin duda, García hizo todo lo que pudo para intentar aprovechar la oportunidad que tenía, ya fuese con sus directos y abiertos cruzados en larga o sacando contundentes hooks cuando las acciones se mantuvieron cuerpo a cuerpo. Por su parte, Colbert no se anticipó como debería haber hecho y dejó trabajar a su ritmo a su adversario, siendo ya muy sorprendente su actitud cuando en el segundo round permaneció con su guardia cerrada y se dejó dar un notable número de hooks a la cabeza sin ofrecer respuesta. Después de estos momentos tan irresolutivos de Colbert, en el tercer round éste optó por ceder la iniciativa brevemente, pero quedó encerrado y recibió nuevos golpes, otra vez sin contragolpear y sin hacer casi nada para oponerse.
Posteriormente en ese mismo asalto y en parte del siguiente, al fin “Primetime” comenzó a usar su velocidad de manos para sorprender a su contrincante con rectos y cruzados desde la media-larga, pero poco tardó en volver a quedar en corta y a ser sobrepasado por la cadencia de García a través de series de hooks. En definitiva, la actuación de Colbert estaba resultando muy mala, ya que, más allá de sus destellos, eran especialmente preocupantes las prolongadas combinaciones de curvos en corta que recibía de forma habitual sin saber evitarlas, contenerlas o replicarlas de ninguna manera.
Colbert recibió su varapalo más severo en el séptimo round, cuando una izquierda a la contra le arrojó a la lona y posteriormente fue hostigado con dureza, castigo que siguió en el octavo episodio. Llegados a este punto, y una vez que pasó los mayores apuros, a Colbert sólo le servía el knockout para evitar la derrota, y en el noveno asalto batalló en corta con desesperación buscando generar daños decisivos, conectando entonces buenos cruzados al mentón. Con todo, en el décimo asalto volvió a ser encerrado y golpeado por andanadas sin respuesta y en el undécimo y duodécimo round hizo poco más que intentar sobrevivir.
Tras el combate Colbert señaló que una derrota no es el fin del mundo, algo que es cierto, pero su boxeo fue tan malo y quedó tan claro que no sabe lidiar con la presión y la frecuencia de golpeo que va a necesitar mucho trabajo para intentar mejorarlo antes de que le llegue un reto ante un adversario que pueda explotar sus brechas, que por momentos fueron como las de un novato que acaba de comenzar en el boxeo y no sabe reaccionar bajo ataque.
Por otro lado, mientras Colbert, al que desde Showtime llamaban superestrella en ascenso antes de esta derrota, pierde su acceso al mundial contra el asequible Roger Gutiérrez, es ahora Héctor Luis García quien se ha ganado la oportunidad titular con su abrumador triunfo, siendo de esperar que se le den buenas opciones de coronarse ante el citado campeón.

In general, when it is said that a boxer has suffered an upset many times it refers simply to the fact that he has been defeated when he was the favorite, and in most cases despite the setback the boxer tried to offer his best before succumbing.
However, the case of the American Chris “Primetime” Colbert 16(6KO)-1 goes much further than this, since not only was he defeated by a late replacement with no experience at the top and that was 13/1 underdog as the Dominican Héctor Luis “Androide” García 15(10KO)-0, but the favorite had a disastrous performance in which he was completely overwhelmed despite being considered one of the greatest current prospects of the super featherweight division. That said, Garcia’s performance deserves credit, since he attacked with great rhytm, knocked down his rival and thrashed him until he achieved the triumph by fair cards of 119-108 and double 118-109.
Without a doubt, Garcia did everything he could to try to take advantage of the opportunity he had, whether it was with his straight punches at long range or throwing hard hooks when the actions were at close range. For his part, Colbert did not anticipate as he should have done and let his opponent work at his own pace, his attitude being very surprising when in the second round he remained with his guard closed and allowed his rival to connect a notable number of hooks to the head without answer. After these irresolute moments from Colbert, in the third round he opted to give up the initiative briefly, but he was put in the ropes and took more shots, again without counterpunching or doing anything.
Later in that same round and in part of the next, “Primetime” finally began to use his hand speed to surprise his opponent with straight punches from the mid-long range, but it didn’t take long for him to stay again close to his opponent and be surpassed by Garcia’s punch output through series of hooks. In short, Colbert’s performance was turning out to be very bad, since, beyond some flashes, were especially worrying the prolonged combinations of hooks that he habitually received without knowing how to avoid, contain or replicate them in any way.
Colbert’s poor performance received the most severe blow in the seventh round, when a left hand sent him to the canvas and he was subsequently attacked with intensity, punishment that followed in the eighth round. At this point, and once he recovered a bit, Colbert needed a knockout to avoid defeat, and in the ninth round he battled desperately at close range looking to generate decisive damage, and he then landed good hooks to the chin. Still, in the tenth round he was once again hit by unanswered hooks and in the eleventh and twelfth rounds he did little more than trying to survive.
After the fight Colbert pointed out that a defeat is not the end of the world, something that is true, but his boxing was so bad and it was so clear that he does not know how to deal with the pressure and the hitting rate of his rivals that he will need a lot of work to try improve before a challenge comes to him against an opponent who can exploit his mistakes, which at times were like those of a rookie who has just started in boxing and does not know how to react under attack.
On the other hand, while Colbert, who Showtime called a rising superstar before this defeat, loses his access to the world championship against Roger Gutiérrez, it is now Héctor Luis García who has earned the title opportunity with his excellent victory, and is to be expected that he will be given good options to win the world title against the aforementioned champion.
