Former world champion Miguel Berchelt will return on March 26

Almost a year ago the former WBC super featherweight world champion, and division’s number 1, Miguel «El Alacrán» Berchelt 38(34KO)-2(2) suffered a very tough defeat against his compatriot Óscar Valdez, who a few months before a positive anti-doping test scored a brutal KO in the tenth round of that fight. Since then little has been known about Berchelt beyond some rumors about a possible move to the lightweight division, something that has finally materialized.

As first reported by Jake Donovan, Berchelt will return to the ring on March 26, when he will headline an evening of Top Rank and ESPN fighting at lightweight against Namibian Jeremia Nakathila 22 (18KO)-2. This boxer is known for two defeats, although both meritorious: a majority decision as a visitor in Russia against super featherweight world challenger Evgeny Chuprakov and another with wide scorecards against the future top 10 pound for pound, and two divisions titlist, Shakur Stevenson.

Therefore, in this first lightweight test, Berchelt would have a duel against a tough, willful boxer who also moves up in weight but against whom he would be an obvious favorite, among other things, because of his superior offensive skills.

If the Mexican manages to successfully overcome this first fight in the division, Top Rank would try to position him on the path to a new title fight in the future. In this sense, the lightweight category could offer great opportunities in a not too distant future if after a Kambosos-Haney or Kambosos-Lomachenko fight the champion decides to vacate his belts.
