El estadounidense Keith “One Time” Thurman 29(22KO)-1, excampeón mundial del peso wélter, es otro más de los boxeadores de Premier Boxing Champions que al recibir continuamente enormes ingresos terminó perdiendo el interés por subirse al ring de forma frecuente y, hasta cierto punto, quizás perdió también la llama y el hambre deportiva que debería tener todo púgil.
Poniendo esto en contexto de forma breve, y debiéndose tener en cuenta ante todo que las bolsas oficiales sólo son una parte (a veces muy pequeña) de lo que los boxeadores destacados realmente cobran por una pelea, tras haber sumado más de 3.400.000 de dólares declarados a la Comisión en sus combates contra Danny García y Shawn Porter, Thurman estuvo más de dos años inactivo. Entonces afrontó un rodaje de retorno y peleó contra Pacquiao por una cifra garantizada de 2.500.000 de dólares a la que se debe sumar una enorme bolsa extraoficial (o no declarada) más unos ingresos por porcentaje de PPV no confirmados públicamente pero que ascendieron a bastantes millones (la pelea generó unos 37.000.000 $).
Así, Thurman se tomó otras vacaciones de dos años y medio más que al fin terminarán este sábado en el Michelob Ultra Arena de Las Vegas, Estados Unidos, cuando se enfrentará a su compatriota Mario “El Azteca” Barrios 26(17KO)-1(1) en el duelo estelar de un PPV de Premier Boxing Champions.
En este enfrentamiento eliminatorio WBC Thurman pretende, además de dar un paso significativo hacia un mundial, demostrar que tiene mucho que decir todavía en la división wélter pese a su falta de actividad y a su derrota ante Manny Pacquiao. Ciertamente, muchos consideraron desacertadamente que era un desprestigio gravísimo para Thurman que un Pacquiao en las últimas de su carrera pudiese derrotarle, aunque sólo fuese por la mínima, si bien curiosamente muchos de los que opinan esto son también los que piensan que el ajustadísimo triunfo de Ugás (cuestionado por no pocos) sobre la peor versión físicamente hablando del filipino es una gesta increíble…
De todos modos, aunque un único asalto pudo separar tanto a Thurman como a Ugás del empate ante Pacquiao, al estadounidense le toca ahora cavar hondo para tratar de poner de manifiesto que no está por encima de sus posibilidades pelear en la élite del peso wélter en este momento de su carrera.
Para Barrios, la situación es diferente, pero tiene puntos en común. Primeramente, este púgil también llega de una derrota, en su caso ante Gervonta Davis, quien pese a ser un rival muy complicado tenía desventajas en dimensiones y peso que conllevaron que muchos, otra vez equivocadamente, criticasen a Barrios por “permitir” que un boxeador “pequeño” le noquease. Por otro lado, Barrios también quiere dar un golpe en la mesa en cuanto a sus aspiraciones en el peso wélter, categoría a la que asciende y en la que siente que necesita derrotar a Thurman para poner de manifiesto que merece un hueco en la cumbre de las 147 libras.
En definitiva, es un choque en el que dos boxeadores que quieren reivindicarse, que quieren medirse a la élite del peso wélter y que quieren retornar a la senda del triunfo pelean el uno contra el otro apuntando a una gran pugna en la segunda mitad en caso de victoria. Para obtenerla, Thurman es favorito por muy estrecho margen, siendo esto razonable por tener un recorrido más extenso en la división y mayores logros en general pero también elementos negativos importantes en su contra.
Respecto al apartado estratégico, aunque Thurman fue llamado en su día “One Time” (“Una Vez”) debido a que se decía que con un solo puño le bastaba para poner fin a una pelea, lo cierto es que solamente ha conseguido una victoria antes del límite en los últimos ocho años y se ha apoyado esencialmente en un boxeo táctico, con escasos riesgos y bajo ritmo. Esta forma de combatir, además de favorecer peleas muy igualadas, suele sufrir bastante los efectos de una baja cantidad de combates, de modo que ante un Barrios ambicioso, con cierta explosividad, con buenos uno-dos y un sólido boxeo en larga pero que pierde la iniciativa con facilidad y que no es extraordinario en corta, Thurman podría acertar poniendo presión y frecuencia de golpeo.
Con todo, aunque Thurman afirma que esta vez atacará con mayor cadencia, este no ha sido precisamente su boxeo predilecto en su carrera reciente y quizás la falta de rodaje no le permita finalmente rendir a un ritmo elevado, cosa que de ser así debería ser aprovechado por Barrios para lanzar reiterados directos, anticiparse y evitar el despliegue ofensivo y dinámico de su contrincante que, más allá de sus heterodoxos y precisos contragolpes, podría perder asaltos a ojos de los jueces si no pudiese utilizar otra cosa que sus manos aisladas.
En todo caso, parece un choque que, aunque quizás no desemboque en una batalla descarnada y aunque tenga bastante de táctico-agresivo y no convenza a todos, debería estar contendido, ser interesante y mostrar, más allá de sus objetivos, si en esta pelea decisiva uno de los dos o ambos están dispuestos a cambiar de marcha e ir más allá de lo que suele ser habitual en ellos, que en no pocas ocasiones ha sido escasamente suficiente.
Este duelo y su respaldo (que será tratado en la siguiente previa) serán emitidos en Estados Unidos el sábado a través de un PPV de FOX desde las 21:00 ET/18:00 PT, las 3:00 en España, donde se podrá visualizar, al igual que en otros países, pagando un PPV de Fite.

American Keith “One Time” Thurman 29(22KO)-1, former welterweight world champion, is another of the Premier Boxing Champions boxers who, after continually receiving huge purses, ended up losing interest in getting into the ring frequently and, to a certain extent, perhaps he also lost the flame and the sporting hunger that every boxer should have.
Putting this into context briefly, and keeping in mind first of all that the official purses are only a part (sometimes a very small part) of what top boxers actually earn for a fight, after earning more than 3,400,000 dollars declared to the Commission for his fights against Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter, Thurman was inactive for more than two years. Then he faced a return tune-up and fought against Pacquiao for a guaranteed figure of 2,500,000 dollars to which must be added a huge unofficial (or undeclared) purse plus a percentage of the PPV not publicly confirmed but that amounted to a few millions (the fight generated about $37,000,000).
Thus, Thurman took another vacation of two and a half years that will finally end this Saturday at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, United States, when he will face his compatriot Mario «El Azteca» Barrios 26(17KO)-1(1) in the main match of a Premier Boxing Champions PPV.
In this WBC eliminator, Thurman intends, in addition to taking a significant step towards a world championship, to show that he still has a lot to say in the welterweight division despite his lack of activity and his loss to Manny Pacquiao. Certainly, many mistakenly considered that it was a very serious loss of prestige for Thurman that a Pacquiao in the last days of his career could defeat him, even if it was only by a minimum margin, although curiously many of those who think this have also the opinion that the very close victory of Ugás (questioned by many) over the worst physically version of the Filipino is an incredible feat…
In any case, although a round of difference separated Thurman and Ugás from a draw against Pacquiao, it is now up to the American to dig deep to try to show that it is not above his possibilities to fight in the welterweight elite at this point in his career.
For Barrios, the situation is different, but it has points in common. First of all, this fighter also comes from a loss, in his case against Gervonta Davis, who despite being a very complicated rival had disadvantages in size and weight that led many, again wrongly, to criticize Barrios for «allowing» a «short» boxer to knock him out. On the other hand, Barrios also wants to make a statement in terms of his aspirations at welterweight, a division to which he has ascended and in which he feels he needs to defeat Thurman to show himself deserving of a place at the 147 lb top.
In short, it is a bout in which two boxers who want to vindicate themselves, who want to face the welterweight elite and who want to return to the path of victory fight against each other aiming at a great match in the second half of the year in case of victory. To get it, Thurman is a very narrow favorite, something reasonable taking into account his longer run in the division and greater accomplishments overall but also important negative factors against him.
Regarding the strategic part, although Thurman was once called «One Time» because it was said that with a single punch he could end a fight, the truth is that he has only achieved one victory by knockout in the last eight years and has essentially relied on a tactical boxing, with few risks and low rhythm. This way of fighting, in addition to favoring very even fights, usually suffers quite a bit from the effects of a low number of fights. So fighting against Barrios, a hungry boxer with a certain explosiveness, with good one-two combinations and a solid long-range boxing but who loses the initiative with ease and that is not extraordinary at close range, Thurman could get it right putting pressure and striking frequency.
All in all, although Thurman affirms that this time he will attack with greater cadence, this has not exactly been his favorite boxing in his recent career and perhaps the ring rust will not allow him to perform at a high rythm. In that case, Barrios should take advantage of it launching regular straights and anticipating to his opponent who, beyond his unorthodox and precise counterattacks, could lose rounds in the eyes of the judges if he could not use anything other than sporadic punches.
In any case, it seems like a fight that, although it may not lead to an intense battle and although could be quite tactical-aggressive and not convince everyone, should be interesting and show, beyond their objectives, if in this decisive match one of the two or both are willing to go beyond of what is usual for them, which on few occasions has been scarcely enough.
