Dos años después de su último combate, el monarca mundial WBC del peso pluma “Mr.” Gary Russell Jr. 31(18KO)-2 ha dejado de serlo, poniéndose fin por lo tanto al reinado más largo de la actualidad, que se inició en 2015. El protagonista de esta gesta, que le devolverá un ritmo normal de peleas a la división pluma en el Consejo tras demasiadas temporadas de estancamiento, ha sido el aspirante obligatorio filipino Mark “Magnífico” Magsayo 24(16KO)-0, que con una decisión mayoritaria se ha coronado nuevo campeón mundial. Las puntuaciones fueron acertadas, dando doble 115-113 y un 114-114.
En los compases iniciales Magsayo dejó claro que no pensaba dejarse arrastrar a una pelea de bajísimo ritmo, sino que ya hizo serias pruebas con golpes de poder curvos arriba y abajo y algunos duros rectos. Russell trató de reposicionarse y tirar veloces rectos, pero Magsayo tenía un excelente timing e incluso lograba alcanzar a su rival esquivando o antes de que se replegase tras un ataque. Ciertamente, los uppercuts diestros y las derechas rectas del filipino parecían tener peligro y potencia, resultando además incomodantes por neutralizar las elecciónes tácticas del estadounidense.
El veloz Russell intentaba sorprender con su velocidad con cortos rectos aislados, pero el fuerte Magsayo estaba siempre preparado para replicarle con contundencia o para arrojar contraofensivas. Por si esto fuese poco, en el cuarto asalto el tagalo conectó un buen directo y Russell se quejó en ese momento de un dolor en el hombro derecho, entrando el médico a revisárselo antes del quinto episodio, por lo que aunque el campeón ajustó un tanto antes de la mitad y tuvo más éxito con su izquierda recta y sus esquivas, la situación no era para nada sencilla.
Los breves momentos de acierto de Russell pronto se encontraron con los rectos y los curvos de mano adelantada de “Magnifico”, que aunque erraba manos de forma cada vez mayor y no encontraba los contragolpes del comienzo tenía la insistencia y el tesón que les faltaron a muchos otros rivales del titular. De todos modos, el visitante había dejado que el combate se enfriase mucho, algo que no le convenía siendo Russell un púgil elusivo y experto con las oportunistas manos aisladas entre desplazamientos, algo de lo que dio muestra en el octavo y en el noveno.
Finalmente, cuando sólo faltaban tres asaltos llegó el habitual bajón de eficacia que Russell suele padecer en el último tramo de las pugnas, descargando Magsayo hooks abajo, tirando cortas combinaciones de rectos e intentando presionar contra las cuerdas al estadounidense, logrando así asegurarse la victoria en dos de las cartulinas.
Sin duda, muchos usarán la supuesta lesión de hombro de Russell como una excusa para éste, pero lo cierto es que el púgil ha estado jugando con fuego demasiado tiempo con su inactividad y una vez que se ha encontrado con un reto de la máxima dificultad ha terminado siendo superado claramente. En este sentido, no se debe quitar ni un ápice de mérito a Magsayo que, si bien tuvo momentos de indecisión pasada la mitad, tuvo el mejor arranque de cuantos rivales se han enfrentado a Russell gracias a una gestión de los tiempos extraordinaria y a una precisión no menos brillante. Además de mantener un decidido comienzo y de lograr importantes aciertos iniciales, cuando llegó la hora de cerrar la victoria intensificando sus acciones lo hizo, por lo que siendo un joven púgil en el mayor combate de su carrera y en su primer mundial pasó la prueba con nota.
Reinando en una categoría en la que son también campeones Leo Santa Cruz, Emanuel Navarrete y Kiko Martínez, el invicto Magsayo estará en buena compañía tanto para pactar interesantes unificaciones como para intentar aspirar al número 1 de la categoría, pareciendo que al ser compañero de escuadra Santa Cruz este es el boxeador con el que en teoría tiene más posibilidades de enfrentarse en el futuro.

The longest reing in today’s boxing (which began in 2015) has finished with the defeat, two years after his last bout, of the WBC featherweight world champion «Mr.» Gary Russell Jr. 31(18KO)-2. The protagonist of this feat, which will return a normal rhythm of fights to the featherweight division in the Council after too many seasons of stagnation, has been the Filipino mandatory challenger Mark «Magnífico» Magsayo 24(16KO)-0, who with a majority decision has been crowned as new world champion. The scores were accurate, double 115-113 and one 114-114.
In the beginning Magsayo made it clear that he did not intend to be dragged into a fight of very low pace, so he made serious tests with with hooks up and down and some hard straight punches. Russell tried to reposition himself and throw fast straights, but Magsayo had excellent timing and even managed to catch his rival with his punches when he was dodging or when he retreated after an attack. Certainly, the Filipino’s right-handed uppercuts and straight rights punches seemed to have danger and power, and were uncomfortable as they neutralized the American’s tactical choices.
The fast Russell tried to surprise with his speed with isolated straight shots, but the strong Magsayo was always prepared to respond hard or to throw counteroffensives. As if this were not enough, in the fourth round the Filipino connected a straight punch and Russell complained at that moment of a pain in the right shoulder, which the doctor checked before the fifth episode, so although the champion adjusted before the half of the fight and had more success with his straight left and his dodges, the situation was not at all easy for him.
Russell’s brief moments of success soon met with the straight punches and the lead hook of «Magnifico», who although missed shots increasingly and did not find the counterpunches of the beginning had the insistence and tenacity that lacked many other rivals of the belt holder. Anyway, the visitor let the fight lose intensity, something not convenient against Russell, an elusive and expert boxer with the opportunistic punches while moving, something he showed in the eighth and ninth rounds.
Finally, when there were only three rounds left came the usual drop in efficiency that Russell usually suffers in the last stretch of the fights, unloading Magsayo hooks down, throwing short combinations of straights and trying to press the American against the ropes.
Without a doubt, many will use Russell’s alleged shoulder injury as an excuse for him, but the truth is that the boxer has been playing with fire too long with his inactivity and once he has encountered a challenger of maximum difficulty he has ended up being clearly surpassed. In this sense, not one single bit of merit should be taken away from Magsayo who, although he had moments of indecision after the half point, had the best start of how many rivals have faced Russell thanks to an extraordinary timing and a precision no less brilliant. In addition to maintain a determined start and important initial successes, when the time came to ensure victory intensifying his actions he did it, so for a young boxer in the biggest fight of his career and in his first world championship he passed the test with a good mark.
In a category in which Leo Santa Cruz, Emanuel Navarrete and Kiko Martínez are also champions, the undefeated Magsayo will be in good company to make interesting unifications and to try to aspire to the number 1 of the category. In this sense, it seems that his stablemate Santa Cruz is the boxer with whom he has the most possibilities to agree a fight in the future.
