A todo el mundo le gustan las historias boxísticas en las que un púgil con pocos recursos y del que no se espera demasiado acaba superando sus límites para terminar encumbrándose. Esto lo sabe muy bien Top Rank, que no perdió la ocasión para explotar esta narrativa con Joe Smith Jr. 27(21KO)-3(1) hasta que éste terminó con un cinturón en su poder. Ciertamente la historia se escribía sola, ya que Smith pasó de ser un obrero con un salario bajo a retirar a un histórico como Bernard Hopkins, recuperándose posteriormente de derrotas para alcanzar una racha positiva y terminar proclamándose campeón mundial WBO del peso semipesado.
No obstante, aunque este relato, acompañado de diversos toques sentimentales más, incluso le sirvió a Smith para que muchos aficionados y expertos se negasen a aceptar que su victoria mundialista ante Vlasov fue un evidente robo, el hecho es que todo tiene un límite y, más allá de la simpatía que pueda despertar, no se puede ocultar que el boxeador estadounidense en la esfera mundialista está en un ámbito por encima de sus posibilidades.
Efectivamente, compartiendo trono en la categoría del peso semipesado con el muy hábil Dmitry Bivol y con un temible noqueador como Artur Beterbiev, se pone de manifiesto fácilmente que un Smith que se vio tosco e irresolutivo contra el correoso Vlasov está a una pelea ante un púgil de la cúspide (o quizás simplemente contra un rival con una clara ventaja en técnica o potencia) de perder su cinturón.
De todos modos, a pesar de que tanteó un salto a DAZN para afrontar un combate menos complicada ante Daniel Jacobs, se debe destacar que Smith, después de renovar su acuerdo con Top Rank y ESPN, ha terminado expresando públicamente su voluntad de afrontar a continuación un choque decisivo para su legado contra su compañero de escuadra Beterbiev, quien puede estar perdiendo rendimiento pero que sigue siendo un adversario formidable.
Aunque se está empezando a perfilar claramente esta triple unificación, será necesario tener en cuenta los requerimientos de la WBO, cuyo aspirante obligatorio Anthony Yarde y su promotor Frank Warren no quieren perder la ocasión de retar a Smith. Y es que el retador británico sabe perfectamente que un duelo ante este monarca es la mejor opción que tiene para coronarse y que de no conseguir una pelea ante Smith difícilmente logrará un título mundial contra los dos titulares rusos.
En cualquier caso, mientras Beterbiev y Yarde esperan impacientes a que Smith dé un paso en una u otra dirección, el titular WBO afrontará este sábado, en el Turning Stone Resort and Casino de Verona, Estados Unidos, una defensa voluntaria contra un compatriota, el también estadounidense Steve Geffrard 18(12KO)-2(1). Este boxeador entra como sustituto con una semana de antelación después de que el rival original, el pegador británico Callum Johnson, tuviese un positivo en un test PCR.
Para muchos Geffrard resulta un boxeador totalmente desconocido, si bien como amateur fue un púgil con éxitos de calibre, ganando el oro tanto en los Golden Gloves como en el campeonato nacional absoluto estadounidense. No obstante, que tuviese éxito en esta modalidad de boxeo no implicó que se materializase un recorrido profesional brillante. Al contrario, tras dos derrotas consecutivas en sus dos primeros choques, Geffrard tuvo ocho años de carrera sin fuerte apoyo promocional y enfrentándose básicamente a boxeadores modestos o muy modestos.
Por todo ello, habiendo disputado sólo dos peleas en los últimos cinco años, siendo quizás sus mayores triunfos los obtenidos ante la veterana piedra de toque Denis Grachev y el entonces muy venido a menos Dmitry Sukhotskiy y afrontando con muy poco tiempo de antelación el mayor duelo de su carrera, a Geffrard no se le dan muchas posibilidades de dar la sorpresa.
No obstante, es justo señalar que Geffrard (que ha realizado sparring con el propio Beterbiev) tiene una base técnica sólida, con un jab rápido, firmes uno-dos y alguna buena combinación con variación de altura, y que Smith viene de dejar una actuación poco convincente, especialmente en cuanto a gestión táctica, de modo que si el campeón no combate con la necesaria tenacidad y el retador tiene la mejor noche de su carrera podría ser un duelo más contendido de lo que la mayoría espera. En este sentido, la clave estaría en que Geffrard pudiese anticiparse ofensivamente o que lograse desplegar un regular boxeo dinámico, escenarios en los que podría encontrar momentos de éxito ante un contrincante que como mejor se desenvuelve es avanzando y pugnando en la distancia media-corta.
Aun así, si Smith pudo aguantar todos los asaltos contra Bivol y Sullivan Barrera y obtuvo victorias contra Jesse Hart y Eleider Álvarez, parece casi inviable que Geffrard pueda dañarle de forma decisiva, mientras que en una pelea larga la experiencia y la potencia del titular deberían decantar a los jueces, especialmente teniendo importantes planes en el horizonte.
De ese modo, y siendo de esperar que Smith pelee mejor que contra Vlasov para intentar reivindicarse y no pudiendo permitirse un tropiezo si quiere alcanzar la mayor pelea de su carrera, es de suponer que intentará desplegar un boxeo más agresivo que en su último duelo y que con sus combinaciones de golpes de poder logrará la victoria ante un rival sin poner a prueba en el nivel alto. Con todo, para evitar dudas presentes o futuras será necesario para el monarca que esta vez no se lo piense dos veces a la hora de avanzar, que se muestre consistente en su presión y que no se repliegue si se encuentra con resistencia decidida.
Este duelo, y un semifondo en el que el invicto puertorriqueño-estadounidense Abraham Nova 20(14KO)-0, 3º WBO superpluma, es favorito para imponerse al dominicano William Encarnación 19(15KO)-1(1), compondrán una emisión de ESPN, ESPN Deportes y ESPN+ desde las 22:00 ET/19:00 PT del sábado, las 4:00 de la madrugada del sábado al domingo en hora española.

Everyone likes boxing stories in which a fighter who is not expected to suceed ends up overcoming his limits to end up rising to the top. This is well known by Top Rank, who did not miss the opportunity to exploit this narrative with Joe Smith Jr. 27(21KO)-3(1) until he ended with a belt in his possession. His history certainly wrote itself, as Smith went from being a low-wage laborer to retiring the historic Bernard Hopkins, subsequently rebounding from losses to start a positive streak that took him to the position of WBO light heavyweight world champion.
However, although this story helped Smith to the point that many fans and experts refused to accept that his world championship victory against Vlasov was an obvious robbery, the fact is that everything has a limit and it cannot be hidden that the American boxer as a world titlist is in an area beyond his possibilities.
Indeed, sharing the throne in the light heavyweight category with the very skilled Dmitry Bivol and the fearsome knockout artist Artur Beterbiev, it is apparent that Smith, who looked crude and irresolute against the tough Vlasov, is one fight away from losing his belt against a top opponent (or perhaps simply against a rival with a clear advantage in technique or power).
Anyway, although in the past he tested a jump to DAZN to face a less complicated fighter like Daniel Jacobs, it should be noted that Smith, after renewing his agreement with Top Rank and ESPN, has expressed his will to fight a legacy defining bout against his stablemate Beterbiev, who is past his peak but still a formidable opponent.
Although this triple unification is beginning to be clearly outlined, it will be necessary to take into account the requirements of the WBO, whose mandatory contender Anthony Yarde and his promoter Frank Warren do not want to miss the chance to fight Smith. The British challenger knows perfectly that a duel against this belt holder is the best option he has to be crowned and that if he does not get a fight against Smith it will be difficult for him to achieve a world title against the two Russian champions.
In any case, while Beterbiev and Yarde wait impatiently for Smith to take a step in one direction or another, the WBO titlist will face this Saturday, at Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, United States, a voluntary defense against fellow countryman Steve Geffrard 18 (12KO)-2(1). This boxer is a late substitute of British puncher Callum Johnson, who tested positive on a PCR test.
For many Geffrard is a totally unknown boxer, although as an amateur he was a fighter with successes, winning gold in the Golden Gloves and the USA national championship. However, the fact that he was successful in amateur boxing did not imply that he had a brilliant professional career. Actually, after two consecutive defeats in his first two fights, Geffrard had an eight-year career without strong promotional support and basically facing low or very low level boxers.
So, with only two fights in the last five years, his greatest triumphs being those obtained against the veteran Denis Grachev and Dmitry Sukhotskiy and now facing the biggest bout of his carrer with very short notice, Geffrard is not given much of a chance to achieve an upset.
However, it is fair to point out that Geffrard (who has sparred with Beterbiev) has a good basic skillset, with a quick jab, a solid one-two and some good hook combinations changing levels, and that Smith is coming of an unconvincing performance, so if the champion doesn’t fight with the necessary tenacity and the challenger has the best night of his career it could be a more contested duel than most expect. In this sense, the key for Geffrard would be to anticipate offensively or to use a regular dynamic boxing, scenarios in which he could find moments of success against an opponent who performs best advancing and fighting in the medium-short range.
Even so, if Smith was able to last all rounds against Bivol and Sullivan Barrera and had victories against Jesse Hart and Eleider Álvarez, it seems very unlikely that Geffrard could damage him decisively, while in a long fight the experience and power of the titleholder should be crucial in the judges scorecards, especially with important plans on the horizon.
In this way, and being expected that Smith will fight better than against Vlasov to try to make a statement, possibly he will try to fight more aggressively this time and with his combinations of power punches will achieve victory against an opponent who has not been tested at a high level. However, to avoid present or future questions, it will be necessary for the champion not to think twice when advancing, to be consistent in his pressure and not to withdraw if he meets with determined resistance.
This match, and a co-feature in which the undefeated Abraham Nova 20 (14KO)-0, ranked third in super featherweight by the WBO, is favorite to beat Dominican William Encarnación 19 (15KO)-1(1), will be broadcasted this Saturday by ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ starting at 22:00 ET/19: 00 PT.
