In March it was reported that Australian former unified champion George Kambosos Jr. and British Maxi Hughes had reached an agreement to face each other, although it has not been until now when their fight has been officially confirmed. This IBF lightweight eliminator will take place on July 22 at the FireLake Arena in Shawnee, United States, where it will be televised by ESPN, ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes. In the United Kingdom it will be broadcast by Sky.

As it is considered that undisputed champion Devin Haney will likely vacate his four belts in the near future, a win in a eliminator could guarantee a fight for a vacant world belt, so Kambosos and Hughes can’t aspire to a bigger prize right now as contenders. On the other hand, the clash between the two seems interesting from the boxing point of view and will serve to clearly define what place each one occupies in the division. That is, the fight will decide if Kambosos can stay on the lightweight top or if it is Hughes who manages to extend his streak and further improve his prestige.

In the quotes attached to the press release, Kambosos said:

“I am extremely excited and motivated to make a serious statement against Maxi Hughes in my return fight in the United States, the Mecca of boxing, live on ESPN and Main Event PPV in Australia. Having fought the best lightweight boxers in the world, I now know I have become an even better fighter and have added further artillery and weapons to my overall fight game. Maxi Hughes is a good boxer, a tough Englishman, and I’m sure he will try his best, but I know and he knows that his best will not be enough. Hughes is not elite, and when you have been in there with elite boxers like I have, you pick up on the mistakes in a boxer like Hughes. I will claim his IBO world title and the IBF world title eliminator position on July 22.»

For his part, Hughes simply stated:

“I’m excited to realize my dream of fighting in the USA and to showcase my skills to a new audience,” Hughes said. “I’ll do what’s necessary to get the win.”

In the co-feature bout of this event organized by Top Rank, DiBella Entertainment and Ferocious Promotions, American Olympic silver Keyshawn Davis will take a step up facing Belgian Francesco Patera. As both boxers are direct rivals in the WBO lightweight ranking (Davis is No. 8 and Patera is No. 9), a victory will allow the winner to climb significantly. In any case, Davis seems to be on a completely different level than Patera and it’s hard to expect anything other than a clear win for the former.

In the announcement, Davis stated:

“I belong with all the top lightweights, and Patera is the next one in the way. And just like my eight opponents before him, Patera will have no answer for what I’m bringing to the table. This is going to be a brutal night for him, however long it lasts.”

Lastly, Patera said:

“I am coming to Shawnee to put on a spectacular performance, defeat Keyshawn Davis, and show everyone that I belong on the world stage.”
