El peso gallo mexicano Willibaldo García 18(10KO)-5-1 no es un púgil demasiado conocido por el gran público, si bien es un boxeador realmente duro y peligroso. De esto ha dado claras muestras en el pasado reciente con su ajustada derrota ante el dificilísimo exretador mundial Alexandro Santiago o con una controvertida derrota como visitante ante Paul Butler, tropiezo en junio de 2021 desde el cual García ha encadenado ya siete victorias (cinco antes del límite).
El último de sus triunfos llegó el miércoles con un KOT en el séptimo asalto ante Víctor “Spock” Méndez 31(23KO)-4(1)-2, que perdió en el mismo número de rounds contra “Gallo” Estrada y que años atrás sólo fue derrotado por decisión dividida ante Luis Nery.
En el primer asalto “Spock” respondió bien al contragolpe a las arremetidas de su oponente, si bien en poco tiempo el equilibrio entre la cadencia de las combinaciones de Méndez y la contundencia de los más espaciados golpes de poder curvos de García terminó rompiéndose a favor de éste último. De hecho, alcanzado el tercer round los volados de García dejaron tocado a Méndez, que bajo las posteriores andanadas de puños de su rival pareció cerca de perder por KOT.
Con valentía, Méndez resistió y en el cuarto asalto, a pesar de que no estaba enteramente recuperado, intentó hacerse respetar con sus puños, si bien un cruzado diestro al final del episodio le hizo tocar la lona con los guantes. Así, García salió al quinto asalto a buscar la detención, cargando al ataque intensamente con golpes de poder, si bien Méndez tanto en ese momento como en otros posteriores aguantó las ofensivas y dejó volar sus manos a la desesperada, ofreciendo emocionantes intercambios.
En cualquier caso, pese a su coraje, en el sexto round Méndez fue estremecido dos veces por los potentes puños de García, viéndose en serios apuros y pareciendo necesario empezar a pensar en la detención. Afortunadamente, su equipo no fue negligente (como tantos otros que vemos cada semana) y cuando Méndez volvió a quedar encerrado en las cuerdas en el séptimo asalto y recibió duras manos su entrenador subió al ring para parar el choque.
A pesar de que Willibaldo García podría derrotar a bastantes top 15 y ofrecer complicadas peleas a muchos otros, éste sorpendentemente no está ranqueado en las listas oficiales de los organismos, ni siquiera en la clasificación con 40 nombres WBC, organismo que además suele dar buenas posiciones a los boxeadores mexicanos.
Por lo tanto, si no es que algún promotor de su país decide hacer una inversión a través de títulos menores para apoyar una escalada de García en las listas, al boxeador del estado de Guerrero no le quedará otra que seguir acumulando triunfos (sin permitirse tropiezos) en el intrincado circuito mexicano a la espera de que le llegue una nueva oportunidad internacional que tendrá que encarar en condiciones desfavorables, como ya se ha visto en los veredictos de sus pugnas ante Butler y Santiago.

Mexican bantamweight Willibaldo García 18(10KO)-5-1 is not a boxer well known to the general public, although he is a really tough and dangerous fighter. He has clearly shown this in the recent past with his narrow defeat against the very difficult former world challenger Alexandro Santiago or with a controversial defeat as a visitor against Paul Butler, setback in June 2021 since which García has already chained seven victories (five stoppages).
The last of his wins came on Wednesday with a seventh round TKO over Víctor «Spock» Méndez 31(23KO)-4(1)-2, who lost in the same number of rounds to «Gallo» Estrada and that years ago was only defeated by split decision against Luis Nery.
In the first round, «Spock» answered well with counterpunches to his opponent’s attacks, although in a short time the balance between Méndez’s punch output and the forcefulness of García’s spaced power shots ended up breaking in favor of the latter. In fact, in the third round, García’s overhands hurt Mendez, who under the subsequent flurries of punches from his opponent seemed close to losing by TKO.
Méndez resisted bravely and in the fourth round, despite not being fully recovered, he tried to hold his ground with his punches, although a right overhand at the end of that episode made him touch the canvas with his gloves. Thus, García went all out in the fifth round to seek the stoppage, charging on the attack intensely with power punches. However, Méndez at that and other moments endured the offensives and threw shots desperately, offering exciting exchanges.
In any case, despite his courage, in the sixth round Mendez was rocked twice by Garcia’s powerful punches and was put in serious trouble, so it seemed necessary to start thinking about the stoppage. Fortunately, his team was not negligent (as so many others we see every week), and when Mendez was again pinned in the ropes in the seventh round and received hard hands his trainer stepped into the ring to stop the clash.
Despite the fact that Willibaldo García could defeat many top 15 and offer difficult fights to many others, he is surprisingly not ranked in the official lists of the organizations, not even in the WBC, sanctioning body with 40 names rankings and that usually gives good positions to the Mexican boxers.
Therefore, unless some promoter from his country decides to make an investment through minor titles to support García, the boxer from the state of Guerrero will have no choice but to continue adding victories (without margin for defeats) in the intricate Mexican bantamweight division waiting for a new international opportunity that he will have to face in unfavorable conditions, as was evident in the verdicts of his bouts against Butler and Santiago.
