Chonburi, Tailandia.

The number 1 minimumweight Thammanoon Niyomtrong closed out a chapter by defeating former champion Chayaphon Moonsri

Chonburi, Thailand. WBA world minimumweight championship. Niyomtrong’s eleventh defense.

Those who thought that there could be some kind of animosity between the WBA minimumweight world champion Thammanoon Niyomtrong 24(9KO)-0 and the former WBC titlist Chayaphon Moonsri 55(19KO)-3 were wrong, since, despite the years of waiting before their duel, the two boxers offered examples of cordiality during and after the fight. This was a demanding clash for both with good close rounds, but the monarch Niyomtrong ended winning by deserved unanimous decision. The scores were a fair 116-112, a somewhat excessive 117-111 and a ridiculous 119-109.

The first round was very calm, with both boxers throwing mostly blocked jabs accompanied by some tests with left hooks by Niyomtrong, but in the second round the actions intensified, proving something that could be predicted before the fight: Moonsri is a precise and skillful boxer but the clarity of the shots of the strong Niyomtrong could compensate or surpass his rival’s qualities. The former champion’s jab was clever and he was alert on defense, but the titleholder Niyomtrong’s hooks down were more powerful and significant.

In any case, Niyomtrong missed quite a few punches and Moonsri had moments of notable success, so the actions remained contested, in the center of the ring and in the medium and medium-long distance. In fact, in the fourth round there were brief and consecutive exchanges, in which the monarch was again more forceful with his hooks, while, although he was more aggressive too in the fifth round, his combinations were answered in a good sixth round by Moonsri.

Despite the efforts made by both, Moonsri’s jab and his counterpunches, Niyomtrong was more consistent with his power shots, factor that in a close match can be decisive. Thus, with uppercuts linked with hooks down, Niyomtrong shook the head of his rival in the eighth and ninth rounds as the fight began to offer more entertaining exchanges, in which Moonsri also landed a hard straight right hand. Fighting trying to avoid a possible reaction from his opponent, Niyomtrong rocked the former champion with a two-one combination in an intense tenth round, while in the last six minutes an increase in Moonsri’s activity served him to capture rounds but it was not enough to avoid defeat.

Although a few months ago the WBA made some provisions regarding the minimumweight division, it seems that part of them has ended up being canceled. So, as for the mandatory defense that Niyomtrong will have to face in a few months, the known facts are two: that the regular WBA titleholder, Dominican Erick Rosa, should have access to a fight for the world belt to continue the process to reduce champions in this organization and that the American Óscar Collazo won a WBA eliminator last week against Vic Saludar.

For the rest, leaving aside these hard duels, for the fans only remain to be hoped that Niyomtrong’s team selects for him interesting voluntary challengers and that one day finally there will be a unification in this interesting division.
