Preview: Joet González and Isaac Dogboe battle for being one step away from a world title fight on a Top Rank/ESPN+ evening

The Mexican Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete directly interfered with the world title plans of the American Joet González 25(15KO)-2 and the British-Ghanaian Isaac “Royal Storm” Dogboe 23(15KO)-2(1). In the case of González, after having been widely defeated by Shakur Stevenson, last October he tried to be crowned world champion in a second attempt against Navarrete, but the titlist beat him by unanimous decision. However, Dogboe’s interaction with the «Vaquero» was even more painful, since the Mexican dethroned him as super bantamweight monarch and in the rematch he battered him to a TKO.

Be as it may, although many are obsessed with considering over the careers of those who suffer defeats in fights against the elite, the fact is that the setbacks against a very difficult rival like Navarrete were not the end for González or Dogboe, boxers that this Saturday will battle to be one step away from a new world title match. At the Grand Casino in Hinckley, United States, these two first ranked fighters in the WBO featherweight ranking will face each other in a WBC semifinal eliminator.

Thus, considering that these boxers face a crucial bout for their careers, that they do not have much room for setbacks and that both are ranked boxers with qualities very near to a world championship, this is a clash with interest.

In principle, González will enter the ring as the favorite, this being due to several reasons, including the size of the contenders. Whatever the statistics say about his height, in many of his bouts at super bantamweight Dogboe looked noticeably shorter than his opponents, something that has gone even further in the featherweight division.

Therefore, facing a González with a 15 cm (6”) advantage in reach and who seems to be at featherweight in a natural division for him, things might not be easy for a Dogboe, who has had a hard time winning his fights in this weight class. In fact, his narrow victories against “Pitufo” Díaz and “Blunose” López were controversial.

On the other hand, aside from the fact that in the rematch against Navarrete the African had a worse performance than the one offered by González against this same opponent, the advantage in size of the American is accompanied by greater regularity, consistency and solidity in his boxing. In other words, in isolated actions Dogboe’s explosiveness can be striking and even useful for winning rounds, but the sustained work of the strong Gonzalez, even if less spectacular, is firm, determined and astute.

Some might think, looking back on Gonzalez’s loss to Stevenson, that if Dogboe stays very mobile he could generate crucial trouble. But it is questionable that “The Royal Storm” can sustain a high mobility in the long term, and it should also be noted that Dogboe does not have a level (or a reach) even similar to the top 10 pound for pound Stevenson.

Perhaps Dogboe really could offer an oscillating boxing, trying to go in and out, before ending up exchanging too much. In an approach like this, if González takes advantage of his counterpunching skills to tire or intimidate Dogboe by answering his attacks during the first half, when the actions become more physical in the second half and he can increase his pressure, he might be able to obtain decisive results that could bring him closer to victory.

Big opportunity for Cabrera
In the support of the duel González-Dogboe there will be a lightweight match-up that will have important consequences for both the winner and the loser. In this bout, two boxers in opposite situations like the Americans Gabriel Flores Jr. 21(7KO)-1 and Giovanni Cabrera 20(7KO)-0 will face each other.

Flores was emerging as a very interesting prospect before “Venado” López dealt him a tough loss, after which he was only able to pull off a controversial victory over Abraham Montoya last March. For his part, the undefeated Cabrera, after having been scoring wins on the undercard of Top Rank’s evenings against mid-level rivals, faces his biggest test to date in the co-feature of this Saturday’s event. Thus, a boxer in a bad moment and who needs to regain momentum and another motivated but who has yet to prove his worth in high-level fights, clash in what could be a good match.

In the United States, this event will be broadcast on ESPN+ on Saturday from 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT, while in the United Kingdom will be aired by Sky Sports Action from 1:00 a.m.
