O2 Arena, Londres, Reino Unido.

Okolie and Cieslak made a fool of themselves in a hugfest. Olympic gold medalist Yafai scored an overwhelming victory on his debut

O2 Arena, London, UK. WBO cruiserweight world championship. Second defense of the beltholder Okolie.

The cruiserweight champion Lawrence Okolie 18(14KO)-0 has offered so many insufferable performances full of clinches in his career that from now on his fights should be offered in a new modality, the reverse PPV, in which the public earned money to watch his duels, and it would still be questionable if the match would be worth watching. Now that it seemed that he had ended his obsession with the clinches, once again Okolie offered a very messy fight absolutely full of grabs against Michal Cieslak 21(15KO)-2, who also used the clinches a lot in addition to countless irregularities and inaccuracies. In short, the best thing about this grotesque main matchup of the Matchroom Boxing and DAZN evening was when it was finally over and with it the ordeal of seeing such a show.

The final result was a victory for Okolie by unanimous decision and scores of 117-110, 116-111, 115-112, although the real loser in this fight was not Cieslak but the spectators who had to witness the horrendous performance of both. It should be noted that the referee was the person responsible for allowing such development of the bout, since he did not want to start deducting points so that Okolie, the promoter’s boxer, would not end up being affected by it.

Between repeated clinches in the opening moments, Okolie landed a very strong right hand in the first round that damaged his opponent, who would have gone down if it wasn’t for a hold. Regardless, the bout was immediately muddied by numerous holds from both boxers, who spent much of the first few minutes hitting between clinches, often illegally. Among all this there were very few clear actions, such as some sporadic straight punches from Okolie and some hooks from Cieslak.

In general, it was Okolie who, due to speed and size, managed to connect the most significant hands, but these were very few and in some round perhaps the Pole even hit with more relevant blows with his rough and short hooks between grabs. Finally, something important happened in the fifth round, when the champion scored a knockdown with a right hand.

In any case, the combat did not break and in general terms remained the same, with certain punches from Okolie at long range and endless clinches, the vast majority of them caused by the champion, as he did in the worst moments of his career. But with this he did not avoid some dangerous hands, such as an uppercut that hit him in the seventh round. Be that as it may, and although the monarch did not have a lot of energy, Cieslak was so lacking in precision and had such a messy, chaotic and rough boxing that he could not take advantage of the opportunities even a little, Okolie managing to continue arriving with very few straight punches that gave him the victory.

The plan for Okolie is supposedly to have some unification fight soon, clash that Eddie Hearn could get him with his power and resources. However, perhaps the promoter should place this potential match in the undercard of some good evening, since there will be many fans who, after this performance by Okolie, will not want to know anything about watching him again in the ring if it is not that his fight comes as an extra in the support of fighters who, unlike him, want to box and not give a hugfest.

Galal Yafai debuted successfully
Before the main event took place the professional debut of the Olympic gold medalist Galal Yafai 1(1KO)-0, who obtained an overwhelming victory over the Mexican Carlos Vado Bautista 10(3KO)-5(1)-1, whom he punished incessantly for five rounds through his precision, speed and skill until the fight was stopped.

The Mexican had both courage and resistance, as he took a huge amount of clean shots from Yafai, who landed formidable combinations of straight-hook, hooks up and down, uppercuts and, in short, successions of punches from all angles. Vado Bautista took advantage of some intervals in the attacks of Yafai to throw some hooks that postponed the TKO, but after four rounds the punishment he had received was very great, Yafai’s victory was inevitable and it was necessary to stop the fight.

Finally, the visitor’s corner stopped the bout in the fifth round after the fighter put his knee on the canvas due to the accumulation of punches received and after being hit with a hook down, an uppercut and a couple of straight shots.
