El puertorriqueño Christian Tapia 15(12KO)-1 accedía al mayor test de su carrera como profesional con una racha de actuaciones lo suficientemente buena como para que pareciese viable su triunfo ante un oponente con rendimiento irregular. Pero el más experimentado Thomas Mattice 20(15KO)-3-1, que combatía en casa, tuvo la motivación suficiente como para sacar su mejor versión, anotarse un knockdown, poner en problemas varias veces al favorito y lograr un triunfo por decisión unánime de los jueces con tarjetas de 97-92, 96-93 y 96-93.
En el primer asalto Tapia presionó con firmeza, llevó a las cuerdas a su adversario y le alcanzó con curvos, pero en el segundo un certero gancho zurdo a la contra le dañó, tambaleó y derribó. Mattice hostigó a su rival en el resto de round, y en el siguiente estremeció durísimamente al boricua con un derechazo a la contra, pero Tapia pudo superar estos malos momentos y desde el cuarto asalto intentó comenzar una reacción. De hecho, sus renovadas ofensivas lograron dejar algo tocado a Mattice con un directo en el quinto round de un choque que estaba resultando muy emocionante.
Durante un cierto momento pareció que la tendencia favorable a Tapia se iba a asentar gracias a su superior volumen de puños, pero Mattice volvió a dañar al invicto con una derecha recta en el séptimo asalto. Así, el choque variaba entre los momentos en que Tapia imponía sus ofensivas con determinación y buena cadencia de golpes ante un Mattice que seleccionaba demasiado sus manos, y los instantes en que el estadounidense lograba conectar contragolpes determinantes ante el puertorriqueño, que tenía brechas defensivas y que no sabía combatir de otra manera que abalanzándose sobre su rival.
Pese la caída y los apuros iniciales del favorito, la pelea todavía podía decidirse en el último tramo, que mantuvo la tónica general de igualdad entre frecuentes intercambios. Sin embargo, los daños sufridos por Tapia habían sido mayores, de modo que no pudo sustentar un trabajo lo suficientemente sólido como para convencer a los jueces ante un Mattice, que pese a ser algo movido en alguna ocasión, pareció conectar los golpes más potentes.
De ese modo, Mattice se hizo con un triunfo que es el mayor de su carrera hasta la fecha y que seguramente le lleve a una gran oportunidad en 2023. Con todo, teniendo en cuenta su inconsistencia y que si Tapia hubiese tenido más resistencia o mejor defensa podría haber decantado el choque a su favor, no sería sorprendente si Mattice perdiese claramente de tener que enfrentarse a un adversario con un buen desarrollo táctico y técnico.
Exitoso debut
El primer combate de la emisión de DAZN fue el victorioso debut profesional de la plata olímpica brasileña Beatriz Ferreira 1(0KO)-0, que ganó por amplísima decisión unánime (triple 40-34) una pelea del peso superpluma ante su compatriota Taynna Cardoso 5(1KO)-1.
El combate no tuvo demasiada historia, puesto que con mejor equilibro, más explosividad, mejores recursos y mucha más voluntad de victoria, Ferreira lanzó uno-dos, combinaciones directo-gancho zurdo y series de hooks para superar a una Cardoso que no estuvo cerca de igualar las acciones. De hecho, Cardoso fue derribada en el primer round por una derecha recta y en el tercer episodio por ganchos al cuerpo, siendo quizás lo más meritorio de su actuación que intentó seguir en la pelea pese a su inferioridad manifiesta.

Puerto Rican Christian Tapia 15(12KO)-1 entered the biggest test of his career as a professional with a streak of performances good enough so that his victory against an irregular opponent could seem viable. But the more experienced Thomas Mattice 20(15KO)-3-1, who was fighting at home, this time had enough motivation to bring out his best version, score a knockdown, put the favorite in trouble several times and achieve a unanimous decision victory with scorecards of 97-92, 96-93 and 96-93.
In the first round Tapia pressed hard, took his opponent to the ropes and hit him with hooks and uppercuts, but in the second an accurate counter left hook hurt, staggered and dropped the undeafeated. Mattice attacked his opponent during the rest of the round, and in the next one he rocked hard the Puerto Rican with a counter right hand, but Tapia was able to overcome these bad moments and from the fourth round he tried to rally. In fact, with his renewed offense he managed to hurt Mattice somewhat with a straight shot in the fifth round of a clash that was turning out to be very exciting.
For an instant it looked like the favorable trend for Tapia was going to settle due to his superior punch output, but Mattice hurt the undefeated again with a crisp straight right hand in the seventh round. Thus, the clash had moments in which Tapia imposed his offensives with determination and a good work rate over Mattice, who selected his hands too much, and moments in which the American managed to connect decisive counterpunches against the Puerto Rican, who has serious defensive flaws and that doesn’t know how to fight in any other way than by charging against his opponent.
Despite the knockdown and the initial difficulties suffered by Tapia, the winner could still be decided in the last stretch of the bout, which in general was contested between frequent exchanges. However, Tapia had received more damage, so he could not sustain a solid enough work to convince the judges against Mattice, who despite being a bit rocked on some occasions, seemed to land the most powerful blows.
In this way, Mattice obtained a victory that is the greatest of his career to date and that will surely lead him to a very good opportunity in 2023. However, taking into account his inconsistency and that if Tapia has had a better chin or better defense he could have won the match, it is possible that Mattice could suffer a clear defeat if he faces an opponent with a good tactical and technical development.
Successful debut

The fight wasn’t very complex, since with better balance, more explosiveness, better tactical resources and much more will to win, Ferreira threw one-twos, straight-left hook combinations and series of hooks to overcome Cardoso, who was not close to match her opponent’s success. In fact, Cardoso was knocked down in the first round by a straight right hand and in the third round by hooks to the body, and perhaps the most meritorious thing about her performance was that she tried to continue in the fight despite her manifest inferiority.
