Resumen de los cuartos de final del WBC Grand Prix: peso superligero y pluma

Continuamos con el resumen de lo sucedido el pasado miércoles en los cuartos de final del torneo WBC Grand Prix, en esta ocasión centrándonos en las divisiones del peso superligero y del peso pluma.
Peso superligero
El combate entre el kazajo Sanatali Toltayev 4(2KO)-1 y el ucraniano Danylo Lozan 15(9KO)-0 terminó con el segundo venciendo por decisión técnica (47-47, 46-48, 46-48) en el quinto round. Bastión Boxeo: 46-48 Lozan.
El kazajo arrancó bien, pero en el segundo round Lozan rompió el choque derribando a su rival con un cruzado de izquierda. A partir de entonces Lozan siguió trabajando bien con sus golpes de poder, viéndose lastrado sobre todo por los cortes padecidos por los cabezazos de Toltayev, uno en el párpado izquierdo y otro gravísimo en la parte derecha de la frente y que llevó a la detención del combate.
Por otro lado, el choque entre el colombiano Carlos Utria 12(10KO)-0 y el canadiense Spencer Wilcox 12(5KO)-1 terminó con el primero venciendo por amplia decisión unánime (triple 60-54). Bastión Boxeo: 59-55 a favor de Utria. Tanto jabeando, desplazándose y esquivando como usando sus curvos en corta, Utria se mostró muy superior a un Wilcox cohibido y que no fue capaz de ajustar.
A pesar de su gran ventaja en experiencia y en dimensiones, el mexicano Misael Cabrera 17(11KO)-3-1 fue derrotado a manos del uzbeko Mujibillo Tursunov 8(2KO)-0 por decisión unánime (55-58, 56-57, 56-57). Bastión Boxeo: 55-58 Tursunov. Pudo parecer en el inicio que Cabrera iba a volver a imponer su combatividad pero, lejos de ello, Tursunov terminó desplegando un intenso trabajo de presión, golpeó sostenidamente a Cabrera contra las cuerdas y, aunque perdió un punto por reiteración en los golpes bajos (él también recibió varios), logró sellar un buen triunfo.
Finalmente en cuanto al peso superligero, el italiano Fiorenzo Priolo 11(5KO)-1 fue vencido por el sudafricano Ntethelelo Nkosi 10(5KO)-2(1) por decisión unánime y cartulinas demasiado amplias (tres 54-59). Bastión Boxeo: 56-57 Nkosi. Nuevamente, Priolo mostró su gran cadencia de golpeo con directos, pero en varias ocasiones Nkosi pudo superar el trabajo de su rival a base de menos numerosos pero más potentes puños. Con uno de ellos, una mano diestra a la cabeza, Nkosi logró un knockdown que pareció crucial para su triunfo.
Con estos resultados, en semifinales se enfrentarán Lozan contra Tursunov y Utria contra Nkosi.
Peso pluma
Al nigeriano Yusuf Adisa Adeniji 16(10KO)-1 esta vez no le bastó su larguísimo alcance y su boxeo conservador, ya que el francés Yoni Valverde Jr. 16(3KO)-0 le derrotó por merecida decisión unánime (55-59, 56-58, 56-58). Bastión Boxeo: 56-58 Valverde.
En el primer round Valverde cayó en lo que inicialmente pareció un knockdown (un ángulo de repetición mostró que el golpe no le alcanzó), pero desde entonces escogió sus manos de forma certera y explosiva para superar los largos brazos de su intrincado rival y conectar las manos más significativas, incluido un gancho diestro en el tercer asalto que dañó a Adeniji.
La gran sorpresa de cuartos de final llegó con la victoria del albanés Muhamet Qamili 17(7KO)-0 sobre el destacado prospecto estadounidense Troy Nash 5(1KO)-1. El encuentro terminó en empate (58-56, 56-58, 57-57), pero el “sistema mejorado de puntuación WBC” le dio el triunfo a Qamili. Bastión Boxeo: 57-57. En la primera mitad Nash usó su gran habilidad para conectar manos en variadas trayectorias y lidiar con los ataques de su adversario. Sin embargo, en la segunda mitad Nash se vio inesperadamente incomodado por los constantes ganchos en corta de Qamili y recurrió demasiado a los clinches.
El otro estadounidense participante en la rama del peso pluma, Iman Lee 14(8KO)-1, también fue eliminado del torneo, en su caso ante el sudafricano Bekizizwe Maitse 9(3KO)-1. El enfrentamiento terminó en empate (56-58, 57-57, 57-57), pero el “sistema mejorado de puntuación WBC” le dio la victoria a Maitse. Bastión Boxeo: 57-57.
Fue un combate bastante táctico y con predominio de las acciones en la distancia media-larga, produciéndose momentos de éxito de ambos púgiles con certeros golpes aislados, no logrando ninguno establecer un dominio incuestionable.
Por último, el uzbeko Ayubkhon Bakhtiyorov 8(5KO)-1 fue una víctima más del excelente boxeo del mexicano Brandon Mejía Mosqueda 11(9KO)-0, que le derrotó por decisión unánime (60-54, 59-55, 59-55). Al margen del hook de mano adelantada con el que dañó a Bakhtiyorov en el segundo asalto, el mexicano evidenció una vez más su talento, su versatilidad y su gran variedad de recursos para controlar las acciones en todas las distancias ante un adversario duro y voluntarioso.
En cuartos de final se verán las caras Qamili contra Valverde y Maitse contra Mosqueda.
WBC Grand Prix quarterfinals: super lightweight and featherweight recap

Let’s continue with the summary of what happened last Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the WBC Grand Prix tournament, this time focusing on the super lightweight and featherweight divisions.
Super Lightweight
The bout between Kazakh Sanatali Toltayev 4(2KO)-1 and Ukrainian Danylo Lozan 15(9KO)-0 ended with the latter winning by technical decision (47-47, 46-48, 46-48) in the fifth round. Bastion Boxing: 46-48 Lozan.
Toltayev started strong, but in the second round Lozan broke the fight open by dropping his opponent with a left hook. From then on, Lozan continued working effectively with his power punches, although he was hindered by cuts caused by head clashes with Toltayev—one on his left eyelid and another (a very severe one) on the right side of his forehead, which led to the bout being stopped.
Meanwhile, the clash between Colombian Carlos Utria 12(10KO)-0 and Canadian Spencer Wilcox 12(5KO)-1 ended with the former winning by wide unanimous decision (three cards of 60-54). Bastion Boxing: 59-55 Utria. Whether jabbing, moving, and dodging or using hooks in close range, Utria showed clear superiority over a tepid Wilcox who failed to adjust.
Despite his significant advantage in experience and size, Mexican Misael Cabrera 17(11KO)-3-1 was defeated by Uzbek Mujibillo Tursunov 8(2KO)-0 by unanimous decision (55-58, 56-57, 56-57). Bastion Boxing: 55-58 Tursunov. It may have seemed early on that Cabrera would impose his aggressive style again, but instead, Tursunov applied intense pressure, landed sustained punches with his opponent against the ropes and, although he lost a point for repeated low blows (he also received several), secured a solid win.
Lastly in the super lightweigh division, Italian Fiorenzo Priolo 11(5KO)-1 was defeated by South African Ntethelelo Nkosi 10(5KO)-2(1) by unanimous decision with too wide scorecards (three cards of 54-59). Bastion Boxing: 56-57 Nkosi. Priolo once again displayed his excellent punch output with straight shots, but Nkosi managed to overcome his opponent’s work rate with fewer but more powerful punches. One of them—a right hand to the head—resulted in a knockdown that seemed crucial to his victory.
With these results, the semifinals will feature Lozan vs. Tursunov and Utria vs. Nkosi.
Featherweight
This time, Nigerian Yusuf Adisa Adeniji 16(10KO)-1 couldn’t rely on his extremely long reach and conservative boxing to obtain victory, as Frenchman Yoni Valverde Jr. 16(3KO)-0 defeated him by deserved unanimous decision (55-59, 56-58, 56-58). Bastion Boxing: 56-58 Valverde.
In the first round, Valverde went down in what initially appeared to be a knockdown (a replay angle showed the punch didn’t land), but from then on he chose his shots with precision and explosiveness to overcome his opponent’s long arms and land the most significant punches, including a right hook in the third round that hurt Adeniji.
The biggest upset of the quarterfinals came with Albanian Muhamet Qamili 17(7KO)-0 beating the highly regarded American prospect Troy Nash 5(1KO)-1. The bout ended in a draw (58-56, 56-58, 57-57), but the “WBC enhanced scoring system” awarded the win to Qamili. Bastion Boxing: 57-57. In the first half, Nash used his great skill to land punches from varied angles and handle his opponent’s attacks. However, in the second half, Nash was unexpectedly troubled by Qamili’s constant hooks at short range and resorted too often to clinching.
The other American participant in the featherweight bracket, Iman Lee 14(8KO)-1, was also eliminated from the tournament, in his case by South African Bekizizwe Maitse 9(3KO)-1. The bout ended in a draw (56-58, 57-57, 57-57), but the “WBC enhanced scoring system” gave the victory to Maitse. Bastion Boxing: 57-57.
It was a fairly tactical fight with most of the action taking place at mid-to-long range, with both fighters having moments of success through accurate single punches, but neither managing to establish unquestionable dominance.
Lastly, Uzbek Ayubkhon Bakhtiyorov 8(5KO)-1 was another victim of the excellent boxing of Mexican Brandon Mejía Mosqueda 11(9KO)-0, who defeated him by unanimous decision (60-54, 59-55, 59-55). Aside from the lead-hand hook that hurt Bakhtiyorov in the second round, the Mexican once again showcased his talent, versatility, and wide array of skills to control the action at all ranges against a tough and determined opponent.
In the quarterfinals, Qamili will face Valverde, and Maitse will take on Mosqueda.
