Si el plan de Premier Boxing Champions era que el excampeón mundial estadounidense Abner Mares 31(15KO)-3(1)-2 luciese ante un púgil con muchas brechas y por debajo del nivel del top 15 como el mexicano Miguel Flores 25(12KO)-4(3) para después utilizarlo como rival de un boxeador de élite, la jugada no les salió bien. Y es que Mares a duras penas logró un empate (doble 95-95 y un 96-94) en una pelea en la que tuvo muchos problemas de fatiga.
En los primeros asaltos la ventaja en velocidad y técnica de Mares fue determinante para ponerle por delante, ya que en los encontronazos que se produjeron en el centro del ring impactó manos más nítidas y contundentes, destacando varios curvos con los que dejó tocado a Flores en el segundo round. Pese a ello, aunque Flores no es conocido por tener un gran encaje, éste resistió y se recuperó a la vez que Mares pareció cansarse demasiado rápido.
Así, desde el cuarto round el veterano excampeón empezó a caminar más el ring y a recurrir crecientemente al clinch mientras era perseguido por Flores, que sacaba un considerable número de ganchos y trabajaba al torso. Esto agravó los problemas de fatiga de Mares, que de haber tenido delante a un top 15 o a un boxeador con cierta pegada lo habría pasado muy mal. En cualquier caso, ante el limitado Flores, a través de agarres, jabs y de algunos astutos contragolpes mientras corría por el cuadrilátero, Mares evitó verse muy desbordado.
De hecho, como Flores no tenía un corte de ring eficaz, se dejaba agarrar con demasiada facilidad y tenía una defensa permeable, Mares todavía pudo ganar algunos asaltos más. Aun así, Flores le golpeó claramente en el noveno asalto con ganchos zurdos y directos diestros y en el décimo episodio incluso sacudió a su oponente con golpes de poder, por lo que se aseguró el empate.
Quizás este resultado sorprendiese a alguno que, equivocadamente, pensase que iba a ver una buena versión de Mares. Pero, contrariamente, siendo un boxeador que no se anota una victoria ante un adversario de élite desde hace muchísimo tiempo, que llevaba cuatro años inactivo, que tiene riesgo de quedarse ciego de un ojo y que no debería haber recibido licencia para pelear, pese a su mala actuación, Mares ya hizo mucho. Sea como sea, lo que es evidente es que éste necesita volver al retiro con urgencia y olvidarse de peleas ante oponentes de nivel, puesto que si no pudo derrotar a Flores y sufrió para lograr el empate, cualquier paso adelante podría exponerle a un grave riesgo para su salud.

Mares barely managed to obtain a draw (double 95-95 and one 96-94) in a fight in which he had big stamina issues.
In the first rounds, the advantages in speed and technique of Mares were decisive for giving him the edge, since in the clashes that took place in the center of the ring he landed sharper and more forceful hands, standing out several hooks with which he hurt Flores in the second round. Despite this, although Flores does not have a great chin, he resisted and recovered while Mares seemed to tire too quickly.
Thus, from the fourth round the veteran former titlist began to move a lot more and increasingly resort to clinches while being chased by Flores, who connected a considerable number of hooks and worked to the body. This worsened the fatigue issues of Mares, who would have had a very bad time if he had been in front of a top 15 or a boxer with a good punch. In any case, against the limited Flores, through holds, jabs and some clever counterpunches as he ran around the ring, Mares avoided being too overwhelmed.
In fact, since Flores did not have an effective ring cut, he was too easily grabbed and his defense was not solid, Mares was even able to win a few more rounds. Still, Flores hit him clean in the ninth round with left hooks and straight right hands and in the tenth round he even rocked his opponent with his power shots, thus securing the draw.
Perhaps this result surprised some fans who, mistakenly, thought that they were going to see a good version of Mares. But, on the contrary, for a boxer who has not scored a victory against an elite opponent for many seasons, who has been inactive for four years, who has risk of going blind in one eye and that should not have received license to fight, despite his poor performance, Mares did what could be expected or even a bit more. Be that as it may, what is evident is that Mares urgently needs to return to retirement and forget about fights against high-level opponents, since if he could not defeat Flores, any step forward could expose his health to a serious risk.
