Aleksei Papin took former world challenger Prasović to the canvas five times to win by knockout (Video of the fight)

The Russian Aleksei Papin 14(13KO)-1 is the best ranked boxer in the WBC cruiserweight list to challenge the world champion Ilunga Makabu, although at the moment his access to that bout is by no means guaranteed due to the theoretical ban against Russian boxers to participate in title fights. Given this situation, Papin has no choice but to try to keep winning, stay prepared and wait to see how all it ends.

Thus, on Friday, Papin faced the Montenegrin, former world challenger, Dilan Prasović 15(12KO)-3(3), who was taken to the canvas five times before a second-round knockout in the main event of an evening organized by promoter Vladimir Hryunov.

Initially Prasović started unexpectedly well, throwing left hooks up and down, right overhands and lead uppercuts that quickly reddened and caused a cut around Papin’s right eye. However, the local used his power to land a hard hook to the liver that put Prasović on his knees. The boxer got up bent over, so it seemed that the referee was going to stop the fight, although it continued. In any case, at the restart the visitor had to put his knee on the canvas to try to recover after a left hook up (it pushed him more than hit him). Finally, the first round ended with another knockdown when Papin jabbed to the face and followed it up with a left hook to the body.

There is no denying the bravery of the Montenegrin, who decided to go out in the second round and even attacked with his power shots, but a hook down put him on the mat for the fourth time. The referee should have stopped the fight long ago, but he let the action continue again, although this time Papin landed a left uppercut to the head that brought Prasović to his knees during the full count.

As the WBC president himself, in a gesture of supreme hypocrisy, has pointed out how absurd and unfair it is to prohibit Russians from participating in title fights (despite the fact that he was the first to put that measure in place), the logical thing would be to allow Papin to access the bout against Makabu. Even more so considering that the Russian Artur Beterbiev is going to defend his titles, including the WBC, against Joe Smith Jr. However, with a cruiserweight eliminator being ordered between Noel Gevor (2nd WBC) and Thabiso Mchunu (3rd WBC), it seems unlikely that Papin will reach the world championships at the moment.

Be that as it may, when sooner or later the situation normalizes, in principle Papin and Makabu will face each other in a rematch between powerful punchers with defensive breaches that should again be very entertaining and full of action.
