Leo Santa Cruz regresó al ring con abrumadora victoria sobre Keenan Carbajal

A diferencia de lo que algunos pensaban, el duro KO padecido ante Gervonta Davis no ha detenido la carrera del campeón mundial WBA pluma, el mexicano Leo “El Terremoto” Santa Cruz 38(19KO)-2(1)-1. Al contrario, más de un año después de este tropiezo, Santa Cruz regresó al ring en un rodaje en el que obtuvo una abrumadora victoria sobre el estadounidense Keenan “Bedo” Carbajal 23(15KO)-3(1)-1. Las tarjetas fueron de triple 100-90.
En el comienzo se produjeron duros intercambios en corta, pero Santa Cruz terminó obligando a retroceder a Carbajal que, como se podía esperar, no pudo equiparar el trabajo con combinaciones del hábil campeón. Santa Cruz padeció un corte en el párpado derecho por choque de cabezas que fue su peor momento en el combate, ya que por lo demás, y aunque Carbajal tuvo instantes de decidida respuesta, “Terremoto” superó claramente por cadencia y eficacia a su oponente, destacando entre otros golpes su excelente manejo del gancho zurdo arriba y abajo.
Si Santa Cruz tuviese aunque fuese un poco más de pegada, el combate habría terminado antes del límite, puesto que castigó con muchos puños clarísimos a su adversario. Con todo, no siendo la potencia de golpeo precisamente una de las mayores virtudes de Santa Cruz, un “Bedo” espigado y motivado por estar en la mayor pelea de su carrera pudo encajar los golpes rivales sin verse en problemas serios y se mantuvo hasta el final en la pelea, en la que igualmente continuó siendo manifiestamente inferior por el gran volumen de curvos arriba y abajo del monarca.
Como ya se señaló en la previa, pese a no haber defendido su título mundial de la Asociación del peso pluma desde 2019, Santa Cruz sigue siendo su actual poseedor, pareciendo que la WBA debería tener la decencia de ordenarle una defensa obligatoria o exigirle que al menos haga una voluntaria. En cualquier caso, estando en marcha el proceso de reducción de campeones, Santa Cruz teóricamente está emplazado a medirse, quizás a finales de este año, al ganador del choque entre Leigh Wood y Michael Conlan, que tendrá el cinto de subcampeón WBA “regular” en juego.

Despite of what some thought, the hard KO suffered against Gervonta Davis has not stopped the career of the WBA featherweight world champion, the Mexican Leo «El Terremoto» Santa Cruz 38(19KO)-2(1)-1. On the contrary, more than a year after this setback, Santa Cruz returned to the ring in a tune-up in which he won overwhelmingly over the American Keenan «Bedo» Carbajal 23(15KO)-3(1)-1. The cards were of triple 100-90.
At the beginning there were tough exchanges at close range, but Santa Cruz ended up forcing to move Carbajal, who as expected could not match the work with combinations of the skilfull champion. Santa Cruz suffered a cut on his right eyelid due to a clash of heads that was his worst moment in the fight, since, although Carbajal had instants of determined response, “Terremoto” clearly surpassed his opponent with cadence and efficiency, highlighting among other punches his excellent left hooks up and down.
If Santa Cruz had even a little more punch power, the fight would have ended before the limit, since he punished his opponent with many very clear shots. All in all, not being the hitting power one of Santa Cruz’s greatest virtues, a tall and motivated «Bedo», who was in the biggest fight of his career, was able to resist his rival’s punches without being put in serious trouble and remained until the end in the fight, in which he also continued to be manifestly inferior due to the large volume of hooks of the titlist
As already was pointed out in the preview, despite of not having defended his featherweight world title since 2019, Santa Cruz is still the current holder of it, so the WBA should have the decency of ordering him a mandatory defense or require him to at least make a voluntary defense. In any case, with the process of reducing champions underway, Santa Cruz is theoretically set to face, perhaps later this year, the winner of the clash between Leigh Wood and Michael Conlan, whom will have at stake the «regular» WBA title.
