El muy prometedor estadounidense Jesse “Bam” Rodríguez 15(10KO)-0 convirtió anoche parte de su proyección en realidad, puesto que, pese a ascender de división para enfrentarse con pocos días de antelación a un púgil muy experimentado, logró derribar y derrotar por decisión unánime a Carlos “Príncipe” Cuadras 39(27KO)-5(1)-1 en el combate estelar de la velada de Matchroom Boxing y DAZN. Las tarjetas fueron de doble 117-111 y de un 115-112.
Quizás, Rodríguez no boxeó con tanta agresividad como acostumbra al comienzo, sino que, no queriendo dejar nada en el aire, estuvo atento para reposicionarse, bloquear y crear diagonales antes de impactar sus poderosas combinaciones. De todos modos, aunque estaba peleando de manera bastante metódica y Cuadras puso notable actividad, Rodríguez se anotó un knockdown en el tercer episodio con una fantástica acción: tras tirar un directo para distraer a su rival, trazó una diagonal, obligó a girarse al “Príncipe” y le tumbó con un uppercut diestro.
Esto plasmó de forma definitiva que Rodríguez, al margen de estar en un momento físico superior, tenía una gran ventaja en habilidad y que estaba en su gran noche, que no iba a desaprovechar. Así, aunque Cuadras aguantó el centro del ring todo lo que pudo, lanzó más golpes que su rival (aunque no conectó más), realizó ofensivas fieras e intercambió con coraje, capturando algunos asaltos y creando una dura batalla, Rodríguez usó su destreza para quitarse manos y decantar la mayor parte de los asaltos con su excelente eficacia ofensiva, su gran variedad de recursos y su regularidad en una pugna intensa y entretenida.
La victoria le supuso a Rodríguez obtener un cinturón WBC del peso supermosca, si bien hay debate sobre si se le debe considerar campeón de pleno derecho estando por encima de él en el organismo el titular “franquicia” Juan Francisco Estrada. Sea como sea, según estipuló el organismo, el poseedor del título no franquicia debía medirse a Estrada en una defensa obligatoria, por lo que en el futuro deberíamos ver esta situación resuelta. No obstante, dado que Rodríguez entró al combate contra Cuadras substituyendo a Wisaksil Wangek (Srisaket Sor Rungvisai) es de suponer que a Rodríguez se le ordenará pelear a continuación contra el tailandés para consolidar su posición.

En el semifondo, mundial femenino WBA del peso gallo, la titular estadounidense Jamie “The Miracle” Mitchell 8(5KO)-0-2 mostró lo pésimamente emparejado que estaba el choque venciendo a la británica Carly Skelly 4(0KO)-1(1)-1 tras vapulearla durante cuatro asaltos.
Mitchell se movió, jabeó y buscó afiladas contras ante una Skelly lenta y frontal y que ya en el primer asalto cayó a la lona por una combinación de ganchos. En el segundo round hubo otro knockdown también al final, cuando Skelly fue derribada por un directo enlazado con gancho zurdo, continuando Mitchell dominando con su movilidad y sus contragolpes hasta que en el cuarto asalto conectó una brutal andanada de ganchos y rectos que obligaron al árbitro a parar el choque.
En cuanto al combate del pluma entre Raymond “Savage” Ford 11(6KO)-0-1 y Edward “Kid” Vázquez 11(3KO)-1 este se resolvió con una controvertida victoria del primero por decisión dividida (94-96, 97-93 y 98-92). La contienda osciló entre los momentos en que en la distancia larga Ford hizo valer su destreza y su rapidez y los instantes en los que Vázquez presionó y trabajó en la distancia media y corta con sus golpes de poder, siendo una pugna bastante igualada. Aun así, la mayoría consideró que el trabajo de Vázquez resultó más determinante y que mereció el triunfo.
En la cartelera principal también sumaron victorias Fernando Díaz 11(3KO)-1-1 y Khalil Coe 2(2KO)-0-1. En el caso de Díaz, éste superó por decisión unánime (doble 96-93 y un 95-94) a Lorenzo Smith 10(8KO)-1, que le derribó en el quinto asalto con un gancho zurdo pero que en líneas generales fue superado por la anticipación y el ordenado boxeo, basado en firmes jabs, del favorito. En cuanto a Coe, éste derrotó a Dylan O’Sullivan 1(0KO)-1(1) en el segundo asalto, en el que el invicto se anotó dos knockdowns, uno con uppercut diestro y otro con hooks enlazados, antes de que se llegase al final.

The very promising American Jesse “Bam” Rodríguez 15(10KO)-0 turned part of his projection into reality last night, since, despite of moving up in weight to face a very experienced fighter as a late replacement, he managed to knock down and defeat by unanimous decision Carlos “Príncipe” Cuadras 39(27KO)-5(1)-1 in the main event of the evening of Matchroom Boxing and DAZN. The cards were of double 117-111 and one 115-112.
Perhaps Rodriguez did not box as aggressively as he is used to at the start, but rather he was on the lookout to reposition, block and create angles before hitting with his powerful combinations. In any case, although he was fighting in a fairly methodical way and Cuadras put in a remarkable activity, Rodríguez scored a knockdown in the third episode with a fantastic action: after throwing a straight shot to distract his rival, he steped to one side of his opponent, forcing “El Príncipe” to turn and knocking him down with a right uppercut.
This definitively confirmed that Rodríguez, apart from being in a superior physical moment, had a great advantage in skill and that he was on his big night, which he was not going to waste. Thus, although Cuadras held the center of the ring as long as he could, threw more punches than his rival (although he did not land more), made fierce offenses and exchanged with courage, capturing some rounds and creating a tough battle, Rodríguez used his skill to elude punches and win most of the rounds with his excellent offensive efficiency, his great variety of resources and his regularity in an intense and entertaining fight.
With this victory Rodríguez earned a WBC super flyweight belt, although there is a debate about whether he should be considered a full-fledged champion, as there is a “franchise” titleholder, Juan Francisco Estrada, above him in the sanctioning body. Be that as it may, the WBC stipulated that the holder of the non-franchise title had to face Estrada in a mandatory defense, so in the future we should see this situation resolved. However, since Rodriguez entered the fight against Cuadras substituting Wisaksil Wangek (Srisaket Sor Rungvisai), it is assumed that Rodriguez will be ordered to fight the Thai next to consolidate his position.

On the undercard, a WBA female bantamweight world champion, the American titleholder Jamie «The Miracle» Mitchell 8(5KO)-0-2 showed how badly matched was this fight by defeating the British Carly Skelly 4(0KO)-1(1)-1 after giving her a beating for four rounds.
Mitchell moved, jabbed and looked for sharp counters against a slow and frontal Skelly, who in the first round was dropped to the canvas by a combination of hooks. In the second round there was another knockdown also at the end, when Skelly fell as a consecuence of a straight right and a left hook. Mitchell continued to dominate with his mobility and his counterpunches until in the fourth round he landed a brutal barrage of hooks and straight punches that forced the referee to stop the fight.
As for the featherweight bout between Raymond “Savage” Ford 11(6KO)-0-1 and Edward “Kid” Vázquez 11(3KO)-1, it was resolved with a controversial split decision victory for Ford (94-96, 97- 93 and 98-92). Despite of being a contested fight, the majority of observers considered that Vázquez’s work was more decisive and that he deserved the victory.

As for Coe, he defeated Dylan O’Sullivan 1(0KO)-1(1) in the second round, in which the unbeaten scored two knockdowns, one with a right uppercut and one with combinations of hooks, before the end.
