Aunque también debería estar retirado, “El Gallo” regresó y venció

Nonito Donaire no fue el único excampeón veterano que, incapaz de asumir la realidad y velar por su salud, regresó al ring este fin de semana, ya que también lo hizo el mexicano Juan Francisco “El Gallo” Estrada 45(28KO)-4(1). Es cierto que “sólo” ha pasado un año desde su derrota ante el especialista en derrotar a exmonarcas al borde del retiro o semiretirados “Bam” Rodríguez, pero antes de esa pelea Estrada no combatía desde 2022 y muchos lo llegaron a dar incluso por retirado. Muy lejos de eso, Estrada combatió el sábado en Hermosillo contra su compatriota Karim Arce 21(8KO)-3(2)-2, al que venció por decisión unánime en una pelea dentro del peso gallo. Las puntuaciones fueron de 100-87, 99-88 y 98-89. Bastión Boxeo lo puntuó 99-88.
Teniendo en cuenta la situación de Estrada y sus objetivos, quien escogió a Arce como su oponente acertó completamente, ya que, exactamente igual que “El Gallo”, sólo había peleado una vez (hace un año) desde 2022 y, pese a ser voluntarioso y presentar una apariencia de púgil con aspiraciones, es un boxeador con problemas de encaje y limitaciones. Aun así, y aunque perdió ante un novato por KOT en su penúltimo combate, Arce logró aguantar en pie los diez rounds y dar algo de trabajo al venido a menos Estrada que, eso sí, se anotó tres knockdowns.
Más allá de algún desordenado ataque inicial de Arce, Estrada pronto desplegó su jab, sus combinaciones de directo-gancho y sus reposicionamientos acompañados de esquivas que, pese a ser menos veloces y menos ágiles que en el pasado, le sirvieron para neutralizar a su oponente, que en el segundo asalto fue derribado: un uppercut zurdo al torso le dejó tocado antes de que un gancho de izquierda abajo le llevase al tapiz.
Posteriormente, Estrada siguió apoyándose en su superior boxeo para imponerse en la distancia media y larga y en su técnica y mayores recursos para tener mejores resultados que su oponente en los intercambios en la distancia corta, llevándose casi todos los rounds y dejando tocado en el sexto a su contrincante. Arce le puso ganas y en ocasiones, como en el noveno asalto, lanzó algunas combinaciones de volados que mostraron la pérdida de fluidez y de resistencia al cansancio de “El Gallo”. Pero a Estrada todavía le queda suficiente astucia como para aprovechar esos ataques, así que con un hook zurdo arriba a la contra derribó a su oponente en el décimo asalto, padeciendo Arce una cuenta más antes del final del combate al verse obligado a poner la rodilla en la lona hostigado y golpeado por una combinación directo-gancho.
Los problemas que Estrada tiene para poder aspirar a alcanzar un título en el peso gallo son similares a los de Donaire, puesto que, con Nakatani en proceso de unificación total de la división, sus vías para acceder a un mundial que tenga alguna posibilidad de ganar se limitan mucho. Además, aunque un púgil como Arce no suponga un gran reto y pueda casi sucumbir ante sus golpes, Estrada no tiene ni por asomo el rendimiento del pasado, siendo mucho menos rápido, resistente y contundente, por lo que, más allá de un triste duelo entre veteranos contra Donaire que quizás pueda tener interés para algunos, sus posibilidades de lograr éxitos relevantes en el peso gallo son muy limitadas y deberá escoger a sus rivales con mucho cuidado si quiere evitar una dura derrota en un combate con escasa ganancia potencial.

Nonito Donaire wasn’t the only veteran former champion who, unable to accept reality and take care of his health, returned to the ring this weekend, as Mexican Juan Francisco «El Gallo» Estrada 45(28KO)-4(1) also stepped in the ring. It’s true that «only» a year has passed since his loss to «Bam» Rodríguez, a specialist in defeating former champions on the verge of retirement or semi-retired, but before that fight, Estrada hadn’t fought since 2022, and many even considered him retired. Far from that, Estrada fought on Saturday in Hermosillo against his compatriot Karim Arce 21(8KO)-3 (2)-2, whom he defeated by unanimous decision in a bantamweight bout. Considering Estrada’s situation and goals, whoever chose Arce as his opponent made the perfect choice. Just like «El Gallo,» he had only fought once (a year ago) since 2022 and, despite being brave and appearing to be a fighter with aspirations, he is a boxer with chin issues and limitations. Even so, and despite losing to a rookie by TKO in his penultimate fight, Arce managed to stay on his feet for the entire ten rounds and gave the faded Estrada some work, although the former champion scored three knockdowns.
Beyond some initial attacks lacking order by Arce, Estrada soon imposed his jab, his straight-hook combinations and his movements accompanied by dodges, which, despite being slower and less agile than in the past, served him to neutralize his opponent, who was knocked down in the second round: a left uppercut to the torso hurt Arce before a left hook down took him to the mat.
After that, Estrada continued to rely on his superior boxing to prevail at mid and long range and on his technique and greater astuteness to outland his opponent in the exchange at close-quarters, winning almost every round and hurting his opponent again in the sixth round. Arce put in effort and at times, as in the ninth round, threw some combinations that showed Estrada’s loss of fluidity and stamina. But “El Gallo” still has enough cunning left to capitalize on those attacks, so with a counter left hook to the head, he knocked down his opponent in the tenth round. Arce suffered one more count before the end of the fight, as he was forced to take a knee after being pressured and hit by a straight hand-left hook combination.
The problems Estrada will face to win a bantamweight title are similar to Donaire’s, since, with Nakatani in the process of completely unifying the division, his path to a world belt he has any chance of winning is severely limited. Furthermore, while a fighter like Arce doesn’t pose much of a challenge and could almost succumb to his punches, Estrada is nowhere near the same level as he was in the past, being much less quick, durable, and powerful. Therefore, beyond a sad duel between veterans against Donaire that might be of interest to some, his chances of achieving significant success at bantamweight are very limited, and he will have to choose his opponents very carefully if he wants to avoid a tough defeat in a fight with little potential gain.
