Sobre el papel, la eliminatoria IBF del peso ligero que el oro olímpico Andy Cruz 6(3KO)-0 afrontaba ante el japonés Hironori Mishiro 17(6KO)-2(1)-1 era un paso adelante y una prueba interesante para su desarrollo y aspiraciones. Sin embargo, aunque el resultado de triunfo por KOT en el quinto round de Cruz está siendo interpretado como una indudable muestra de que el prospecto está preparado para cualquier reto, lo cierto es que Mishiro tuvo una pobre actuación y le puso las cosas muy fáciles al invicto, que realmente no se ha medido todavía a ningún contendiente de nivel alto.
Ante el velocísimo jab de Cruz y sus pasos atrás y a los lados, Mishiro se quedó sin respuesta, por lo que el cubano pronto empezó a sacar también duros ganchos abajo, uno-dos, cruzados de derecha y otros golpes de poder. Esto no quiere decir que Mishiro careciese de valentía ni que fuese sencillo lidiar con la habilidad y rapidez de Cruz, pero ante las andanadas de golpes cada vez más peligrosas, el japonés en gran medida se limitó a cerrarse y ni siquiera buscó el contragolpe.
Así, Cruz lo tuvo fácil para ir haciendo mella hasta que con una derecha dejó tocado a Mishiro que, de forma muy extraña, se replegó medio girado y expuesto a otro directo diestro, que le tumbó. En la reanudación, de nuevo cerró la guardia mientras Cruz lanzaba golpes y conectaba una derecha que le volvía a tirar a la lona. Con algún eventual intento de revertir la situación con combinaciones de hooks voluntariosas, Mishiro demostró que Cruz no tiene todavía una gran reacción bajo ataque y que un boxeador de élite de corte ofensivo podría generarle problemas si va más allá de sus veloces rectos. Pero como Mishiro era incapaz de gestionar la pelea de la forma necesaria y no sabía lidiar con la velocidad de su oponente, Cruz continuó tirando andanadas hasta que en el quinto episodio el árbitro detuvo este combate de un solo lado.
Con el triunfo, Cruz se convirtió en aspirante obligatorio del campeón IBF del peso ligero Raymond Muratalla, un boxeador que, si bien generó dudas en muchos por su actuación ante un púgil hábil como Tevin Farmer, posee la ambición y las cualidades para plantear una verdadera prueba de fuego a la proyección del invicto aspirante.

On paper, the IBF lightweight eliminator bout between Olympic gold medalist Andy Cruz 6(3KO)-0 and Japanese Hironori Mishiro 17(6KO)-2(1)-1 was a step up and an interesting test for the former’s development and aspirations. However, while Cruz’s fifth-round TKO victory is being interpreted as a clear sign that the prospect is ready for any challenge, the truth is that Mishiro put in a poor performance and made things very easy for the undefeated fighter, who has yet to face any high-level contender.
Faced with Cruz’s lightning-fast jab and his backsteps and sidesteps, Mishiro had no answer, so the Cuban soon began to unleash hard hooks, one-two combinations, right overhands, and other power shots. This isn’t to say that Mishiro lacked courage or that Cruz’s skill and speed were easy to deal with, but against the increasingly dangerous barrage of punches, the Japanese just closed his guard and didn’t even look for a counterpunch.
So, it was easy for Cruz to punish his opponent until a right hand hurt Mishiro, who, oddly enough, retreated, half-turned and exposed to another right hand, which knocked him down. After the restart, he again closed his guard while Cruz threw punches and landed a right hand that knocked him back to the canvas. With occasional attempts to reverse the situation with hook combinations, Mishiro demonstrated that Cruz still doesn’t have a great reaction under attack and that an elite boxer with an offensive style could cause him problems if he gets past his quick straight punches. But as Mishiro was unable to manage the fight properly and was unable to cope with his opponent’s speed, Cruz continued to attack until the referee stopped the one-sided bout in the fifth round.
With the win, Cruz became mandatory challenger for IBF lightweight champion Raymond Muratalla, a boxer who, despite raising doubts with his performance against a skilled fighter like Tevin Farmer, possesses the ambition and the qualities to present a true test for the undefeated challenger’s potential.
