Un día antes de que Manny Pacquiao confirmase su retorno a los rings, otro insigne excampeón mundial filipino afrontó su primer test de envergadura desde que volvió al boxeo profesional. Y es que, después de un fácil regreso en abril ante un jornalero para poner fin a cerca de tres años de inactividad, el monarca en cuatro divisiones, y exnúmero 1 minimosca, Donnie “Ahas” Nietes 44(23KO)-3-6 se desplazó a Japón para medirse al local Jun Ikegawa 8(2KO)-1-2, púgil zurdo, 16 años más joven y con considerable ventaja en altura. Pues bien, este ambicioso paso adelante de Nietes, en una pelea pactada dentro del peso supergallo, terminó con éste saliendo derrotado por amplia decisión unánime con puntuaciones de triple 60-54 a favor de Ikegawa. La puntuación de Bastión Boxeo fue 60-54 para Ikegawa.
Aprovechando de forma decisiva su superior velocidad de piernas y manos, su posición de zurdo y su mayor envergadura, Ikegawa controló la distancia con pasos atrás y hacia los lados y lanzó eventuales jabs para evitar casi todas las manos diestras de Nietes. Con el paso de los minutos, Ikegawa empezó a castigar las esporádicas ofensivas de Nietes con claros contragolpes en directo de izquierda y cruzado de mano adelantada, algo que motivó al japonés para, de forma aislada, llevar a las cuerdas a su contrincante y conectar algunos duros uppercuts zurdos.
Así, con Nietes persiguiendo ineficazmente a su rival o retrocediendo ante sus pocos ataques sin lograr responder a ellos, se consumió un combate que demostró que debe pensar seriamente en poner fin a una carrera que se inició en 2003, 8 años después del inicio de la trayectoria profesional de Pacquiao.

One day before Manny Pacquiao confirmed his return to the ring, another distinguished Filipino former world champion faced his first significant test since returning to professional boxing. After an easy return in April against a journeyman to end nearly three years of inactivity, four-division champion and, former number 1 light flyweight, Donnie «Ahas» Nietes 44 (23 KOs)-3-6, traveled to Japan to face local southpaw Jun Ikegawa 8(2 KOs)-2, a 16 year younger southpaw with a considerable height advantage. Well, this ambitious step forward by Nietes, in a fight scheduled in super bantamweight division, ended with him losing by wide unanimous decision with three scores of 60-54 in favor of Ikegawa. Bastion Boxing scored the bout 60-54 for Ikegawa.
Taking advantage of his superior leg and hand speed, his southpaw stance, and his larger size, Ikegawa controlled the distance with steps back and sidesteps and threw occasional jabs to avoid almost all of Nietes’ right hands. As the minutes passed, Ikegawa began to punish Nietes’ sporadic attacks with clear counterpunches with straight left hands and right hooks, which gave confidence to the Japanese fighter to, occasionally, take his opponent to the ropes and hit him with some hard left uppercuts.
Thus, with Nietes ineffectively pursuing his opponent or retreating from his few attacks without being able to answer them, the fight ended, showing that the Filipino should seriously consider ending a career that began in 2003, eight years after Pacquiao’s professional run began.
