Jason Moloney se convirtió en campeón mundial WBO del peso gallo superando con su jab a Vincent Astrolabio

Aunque el filipino Vincent “Asero” Astrolabio 18(13KO)-4(1) mostró mejora técnica respecto a su anterior combate, esta no fue suficiente para poder lidiar con la superior habilidad del australiano Jason Moloney 26(19KO)-2(1), que hizo valer un gran jab, redujo los riesgos al máximo y consiguió hacerse con un triunfo por decisión mayoritaria (114-114, 115-113, 116-112) con el que logró conquistar un cinturón mundial.
Moloney se movió constantemente alrededor de su oponente en el centro del ring y lanzando con precisión y constancia su jab, si bien Astrolabio le contragolpeó con más escasos pero explosivos uppercuts diestros y ganchos zurdos. El hecho de que en esta ocasión el filipino no se arrojase precipitada y desordenadamente al ataque le estaba ayudando a ser competitivo, siendo evidente que había trabajado mucho y que había evolucionado de cara a esta pugna, en la que estuvo mucho más ordenado que de costumbre. Pero indudablemente le faltó cadencia de ataques. Por ello, Moloney pudo asentar su boxeo y fue cada vez más eficaz con su defensa activa, sus numerosos jabs y algunos bien escogidos uno-dos y ganchos de mano adelantada.
Con el paso de los asaltos la explosividad, el peligro y la precisión de los uppercuts de Astrolabio fueron disminuyendo, lo que le permitió a un Moloney con mejor técnica, con más astucia y con un boxeo mucho más ortodoxo ampliar su dominio con sus numerosos jabs, que indudablemente fueron la clave del combate. Pasada la mitad del enfrentamiento, “Asero” entendió que de seguir así las cosas iba a perder por amplia decisión unánime, así que empezó a lanzar más ofensivas y a llegar con peligrosos hooks de izquierda a la cabeza que le dieron rounds y que incomodaron al australiano.
De todos modos, a Astrolabio le faltó constancia para ofrecer el tipo de trabajo que necesitaba para sacar a su oponente de su boxeo o para intentar generar daños determinantes. Así, aunque recibió algunos duros golpes de poder, Moloney pudo aprovechar su mejor control de los espacios, su regularidad y su solidez para obtener los suficientes éxitos como para terminar de asegurarse el triunfo por decisión y lograr el cinturón mundial, si bien por muy escasa diferencia.
La coronación de Moloney es el justo premio para un púgil con muy buenas cualidades, disciplinado y que durante años ha sido uno de los mejores contendientes de la categoría del peso gallo. Con todo, su actuación ante Astrolabio puso de manifiesto que la duración de su reinado dependerá en gran medida del tipo de oponentes al que tenga que enfrentarse. Es decir, si bien ante rivales con importantes brechas, ya sean técnicas, físicas o de otro tipo, podrá hacer aprovechar ser tan completo para lograr buenos triunfos, cuando se tenga que medir a un púgil de élite con gran equilibrio destreza-potencia podría verse en dificultades.
No obstante, el hecho es que, ahora que Inoue no reina en la división, hay muy pocos boxeadores que tengan una balanza físico-técnica tan buena como la de Moloney, así que si no se descuida y despliega lo mejor de sí en cada pelea, quizás sólo las unificaciones le lleven al límite.

Although the Filipino Vincent «Asero» Astrolabio 18(13KO)-4(1) showed technical improvement compared to his previous fight, this was not enough to deal with the superior ability of the Australian Jason Moloney 26(19KO)-2(1), who used a great jab, minimized the risks and managed to win by majority decision (114-114, 115-113, 116-112) to capture the world belt.
Moloney constantly moved around his opponent in the center of the ring and accurately and consistently landed his jab, although Astrolabio countered with fewer but explosive right uppercuts or left hooks. The fact that on this occasion the Filipino did not lunge forward hastily was helping him to be competitive, making it clear that he had worked hard and that he had evolved in the face of this fight, in which he was much more composed than usual. But he evidently lacked punch output. So, Moloney was able to increase his effectiveness and take the lead with his defense, his numerous jabs and some well-chosen one-twos and left hooks.
As the rounds went by, the explosiveness, danger, and precision of Astrolabio’s uppercuts diminished, allowing Moloney, who has better technique, more cunning, and a much more orthodox boxing, to increase his dominance with his countless jabs, which were undoubtedly key in the fight. Halfway through the match, «Asero» understood that if things continued like that he was going to lose by wide unanimous decision, so he began to launch more offensives and connected dangerous left hooks to the head that served him to win rounds and that made the Australian uncomfortable.
Still, Astrolabio lacked the consistency to deliver the kind of work he needed to make his opponent’s boxing lose firmness or to try to generate serious damage. Thus, although he received some hard power shots, Moloney was able to use his better control of the distance and his solidity to have enough successes to secure the victory and conquer the world title, although by very narrow difference.
Moloney’s coronation is the just prize for a boxer with very good qualities, disciplined and who for years has been one of the best contenders in the bantamweight division. Nevertheless, his performance against Astrolabio showed that the length of his reign will depend largely on what kind of opponents he has to face. That is to say, although against boxers with significant flaws (technical, physical or of another type) he will be able to take advantage of being so complete to achieve good victories, against an elite boxer with a great skill-power balance, he could have important difficulties.
However, the fact is that, now that Inoue is not reigning in the division, there are very few boxers who have as good a physical-technical balance as Moloney’s, so if he doesn’t neglect his work and displays his best version in every fight, perhaps only the unifications will take him to the limit.
