Una de las discusiones más habituales entre boxeadores y promotores se debe a que los primeros a menudo sienten que no se les están dando las oportunidades que desean. En el caso de los púgiles de nivel alto, muchos terminan separándose de sus promotores después de que no les consigan una pelea mundialista que han pedido vez tras vez. Sin embargo, el caso del olímpico británico Joshua Buatsi 16(13KO)-0 es muy curioso, ya que éste se separó de Matchroom Boxing (y de su mánager) debido a que la promotora quería darle una oportunidad mundialista que él no quería disputar.
Efectivamente, uno de los puntos críticos en las diferencias entre Buatsi y su anterior promotora era que Eddie Hearn quería que este boxeador, número 1 WBA del peso semipesado, se enfrentase a mediados de año al campeón mundial del citado organismo, el ruso Dmitriy Bivol. Pero ni Buatsi ni su entrenador consideraban que estuviesen preparados para tal reto. A esto se sumaron otro tipo de desacuerdos (y el hecho de que a Buatsi le gustase más el modelo televisivo tradicional que el modelo de streaming de DAZN) para terminar en una separación que dejó cruces de acusaciones públicos entre ambas partes.
Pasando de página, Buatsi iniciará este sábado su andadura con una nueva promotora y un nuevo grupo audiovisual, ya que debutará con Boxxer/Sky encabezando un evento desde el Resorts World Arena de Birmingham, Reino Unido, enfrentándose al polaco Pawel Stepien 18(12KO)-0-1. Éste se suponía que iba a ser el rival de Callum Smith el 11 de marzo, pero la pelea se canceló a poco más de una semana para el combate en lo que pareció una maniobra de Matchroom Boxing para abaratar costes. Así, Buatsi buscará hacer una declaración de intenciones enfrentándose al que iba a ser oponente de otro aspirante obligatorio del peso semipesado y excompañero de escuadra.
Stepien es un púgil invicto y con buena pegada que tiene las mismas dimensiones que Buatsi. Sin embargo, en sus mayores tests ante su compatriota Marek Matyja (que fue noqueado en seis rounds por Craig Richards, último púgil al que Buatsi derrotó) a duras penas logró un empate y una victoria, y tiene un estilo de distancia larga que parece que podría darle facilidades al británico, que es más rápido, tiene más recursos técnicos y tácticos, más explosividad y una carrera amateur superior. Por ello, Buatsi es clarísimo favorito para imponerse, si bien todavía no está claro a dónde irá su carrera a continuación si no quiere enfrentarse a Bivol pese a ser número 1 WBA.
Respaldo del evento
La cartelera tendrá seis combates mencionables, siendo el choque de semifondo el primer campeonato británico femenino de la historia. Por el primer título del peso wélter femenino en Reino Unido combatirán la oro olímpica Lauren Price 3(1KO)-0, que será abrumadora favorita para capturarlo (de hecho el título se ha creado para que ella pueda conquistarlo), y una Kristie Bavington 7(2KO)-3-2 que, pese a ser muy voluntariosa y haber logrado algunos éxitos meritorios, llega de una derrota y parece estar en un nivel muy inferior.
Más interesante parece el encuentro del peso medio entre el campeón inglés Tyler Denny 16(0KO)-2(1)-3 y Macaulay McGowan 17(3KO)-3-2. El primero viene de derrotar a cuatros invictos, mientras que el segundo llega de una sólida actuación, acabada en controvertidísimo empate, en Francia ante un prospecto local (McGowan ganó el combate claramente), por lo que parece un choque bien emparejado. Sin embargo, parece difícil que McGowan vaya a poder abandonar totalmente la mentalidad de piedra de toque y que vaya a poder lograr dar la sorpresa ante un boxeador con gran cadencia de golpes y muy buena resistencia al cansancio.
La cartelera contará además con la tercera pugna de la carrera profesional del plata olímpico Ben Whittaker 2(1KO)-0, que debería poder arrollar a Jordan Grant 6(0KO)-3(1) en un duelo del peso semipesado; con un encuentro del peso superligero en el que Sean McComb 15(5KO)-1(1), púgil con buena y extensa carrera amateur, y Kaisee Benjamin 16(6KO)-2-1, que llega de ofrecerle la pelea más dura de su carrera a Dalton Smith, combatirán por un puesto en el ranking WBO; con una revancha entre los peso ligero Cori Gibbs 17(3KO)-1 y Jimmy First 14(4KO)-1; y con una contienda del peso semipesado en la que el exretador al título británico Shakan Pitters 17(6KO)-2(1) y el exaspirante al título inglés Joel McIntyre 20(5KO)-6(2) combatirán por regresar a la senda del triunfo.
La cartelera principal del evento será emitida en Reino Unido por Sky Sports Action desde las 19:00 en hora local, las 20:00 en hora española, las 14:00 ET/11:00 PT.

One of the most common arguments between boxers and promoters are due to fighters feeling that they are not being given the opportunities they want or deserve. In the case of high-level boxers, many end up parting ways with their promoters after the latter fail to get them a world title fight that they have asked for time after time. However, the case of the British Olympian Joshua Buatsi 16(13KO)-0 is very curious, since he split with Matchroom Boxing (and with his manager) because the promoter wanted to give him a world title opportunity that he did not want to face.
Indeed, one of the critical points in the disagreement between Buatsi and his previous promoter was that Eddie Hearn wanted the boxer (who is WBA number 1 light heavyweight) to face the world champion of that organization, the Russian Dmitriy Bivol, around mid-year. But neither Buatsi nor his coach considered that they were prepared for such a fight. Added to this were other types of differences (and the fact that Buatsi liked the traditional television model more than the DAZN streaming model) that ended in a split that left public accusations between both parties.
Moving on, this Saturday Buatsi will begin his journey with a new promoter, since he will debut with Boxxer/Sky headlining an event from the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, United Kingdom, battling Polish Pawel Stepien 18(12KO)-0-1. Stepien was supposed to be Callum Smith’s opponent on March 11, but the fight was canceled with just over a week to go in what seemed to be a Matchroom Boxing ploy. Thus, Buatsi will seek to make a statement facing a fighter which was going to be the opponent of another mandatory light heavyweight challenger and former teammate.
Stepien is an undefeated fighter with a good punch and who has very similar dimensions as Buatsi. However, in his biggest tests against his compatriot Marek Matyja (who was knocked out in six rounds by Craig Richards, the last fighter Buatsi defeated) he barely managed to obtain a draw and a win, and has a long-distance style that could make thing easy for the Brit, who is faster, has more technical and tactical resources, more explosiveness and a superior amateur career. For this reason, Buatsi is the clear favorite to prevail, although it is still not clear where his career will go next if he does not want to face Bivol despite being number 1 WBA.
Undercard
The undercard will feature six mentionable bouts, the co-feature clash being the first-ever British women’s championship. The fighters who will clash for the inaugural welterweight title will be Olympic gold medalist Lauren Price 3(1KO)-0, who is overwhelming favorite to win (in fact, the title has been created so that she can conquer it), and Kristie Bavington 7(2KO)-3-2, who despite being very tenacious and having achieved some meritorious successes is coming off a loss and seems to be at a much lower level.
More interesting seems the middleweight match between English champion Tyler Denny 16(0KO)-2(1)-3 and Macaulay McGowan 17(3KO)-3-2. The former comes from defeating four unbeaten boxers, while the latter comes off a strong performance, ending in a highly controversial draw, in France against a local prospect (McGowan won the bout clearly), so it looks like a well-matched fight. However, it seems unlikely that McGowan is going to be able to completely abandon the stepping stone mindset and that he will be able to upset a boxer with a high punch rate and very good stamina.
The card will also feature the third professional fight for Olympic silver medalist Ben Whittaker 2(1KO)-0, who should be able to steamroll Jordan Grant 6(0KO)-3(1) in a light heavyweight duel; a super lightweight match in which Sean McComb 15(5KO)-1(1), a boxer with a good and extensive amateur career, and Kaisee Benjamin 16(6KO)-2-1, who comes from putting on a good performance against Dalton Smith, will fight for a position in the WBO ranking; a rematch at lightweight between Cori Gibbs 17(3KO)-1 and Jimmy First 14(4KO)-1; and a light heavyweight fight in which former British title challenger Shakan Pitters 17(6KO)-2(1) and former English title challenger Joel McIntyre 20(5KO)-6(2) will fight to return to winning ways.
