Previa: Campeonato británico Essuman-Kongo más Joseph Parker, Frazer Clarke y Riakporhe en el respaldo del Eubank-Smith

El evento Eubank-Smith será el enésimo ejemplo de cómo funcionan actualmente los eventos en PPV de las grandes promotoras, en los que se paga básicamente por el interés que pueda producir el combate estelar y no por la combinación de la pugna principal y su respaldo. Y es que, de las peleas de acompañamiento de este evento, que tendrá lugar en el Manchester Arena de Manchester, Reino Unido, sólo una está abierta y no tiene un abrumador favorito.
Campeonato británico con consecuencias internacionales
Independientemente de si será más entretenida o menos sobre el ring, la pugna más interesante sobre el papel es el campeonato británico y de la Commonwealth del peso wélter en el que el invicto titular Ekow “The Engine” Essuman 18(7KO)-0 expondrá sus coronas ante Chris “2Slick” Kongo 14(7KO)-1.
En este enfrentamiento un Essuman que ha llegado hasta la cima británica a través de una continua y meritoria sucesión de victorias que han cambiado su valoración y proyección se enfrentará a un Kongo que tuvo una buena carrera amateur (en la que fue miembro de la selección británica) y un inicio de carrera prometedor pero que en 2021 sufrió un tropiezo decisivo ante Michael McKinson que frenó en seco sus aspiraciones.
Además del contraste que ofrecen las situaciones de ambos, los púgiles tienen por lo general estilos muy diferentes, siendo conocido Essuman por su resistencia al cansancio y su ritmo y Kongo por un boxeo técnico, móvil y hábil. Si a esto se suma que Essuman es 10º IBF, que habrá además un par de títulos menores en juego y que la pelea tendrá consecuencias para las clasificaciones mundiales, este parece un choque que realmente merece atención.
En las apuestas Essuman es favorito por muy poco, ya que encara como visitante (es miembro de la escuadra de Frank Warren, Kongo es parte de la compañía Boxxer) un choque ante un rival con más destreza y que tiene ligeras ventajas en juventud y dimensiones. Sin embargo, si Essuman es consciente de esas desventajas y lucha tratando de compensarlas imponiendo su ritmo más alto y su cadencia más regular, podría dificultar las cosas seriamente a un Kongo que suele dudar, que habitualmente tiene mucha menos intensidad combativa y que, por lo tanto, podría beneficiarse mucho de un duelo táctico.
Recuperación post-Juggernaut
En el evento también participará el excampeón mundial neozelandés Joseph Parker 30(21KO)-3(1), que afrontará su primera pelea de recuperación desde que fue brutalmente noqueado por Joe “Juggernaut” Joyce. Viniendo de tal precedente, se le ha escogido un reto que teóricamente Parker debería poder superar, dado que no sólo no se medirá a un boxeador clasificado sino que ni siquiera se enfrentará a un peso pesado. Su rival será el peso crucero británico Jack “One Smack” Massey 20(11KO)-1, que no boxea desde hace 9 meses y que en su único combate de nivel alto fue derribado y derrotado por Riakporhe.
Así, mientras esperamos para conocer qué peso dará en la báscula Massey, en principio Parker, si no es que la derrota ante Joyce ha afectado a su resistencia al castigo de forma determinante, debería poder utilizar sus precisos contragolpes, sus oportunos jabs y sus clinches para regresar a la senda del triunfo.
Riakporhe y Clarke
La cartelera contará con el arriba mencionado Richard Riakporhe 15(11KO)-0, imbatido peso crucero que tras su victoria en eliminatoria semifinal ante Fabio Turchi está clasificado como 2º IBF por detrás del aspirante obligatorio Mateusz Masternak. De todos modos, al margen de su clasificación, su promotor pretende conseguirle una oportunidad voluntaria para que no tenga que esperar más y que pueda disputar su primer mundial en la primera mitad del año.
En cualquier caso, antes Riakporhe disputará un rodaje enfrentándose al veterano excampeón mundial polaco Krzysztof Glowacki 32(20KO)-3(2), boxeador que ha perdido mucho rendimiento y que sólo ha peleado una vez desde que fue noqueado por Lawrence Okolie hace casi dos años.
Finalmente, también cabe mencionar la participación del bronce olímpico británico, y peso pesado, Frazer “The Eraser” Clarke 4(3KO)-0, que después de perder su 100% de victorias por knockout ante Kamil Sokolowski afrontará otro test a su pegada, y realizará comparaciones, enfrentándose al encajador argentino Kevin Nicolás Espíndola 7(2KO)-6. Éste, que nunca ha sido derrotado antes del límite, es conocido sobre todo por haber sido el primero en llevar a una decisión al también bronce olímpico Ivan Dychko el pasado junio.
El evento Eubank-Smith será televisado en Reino Unido por un PPV de Sky (19,95£) desde las 18:00 en hora británica (las 19:00 en hora española). En España, la velada será emitida por Proximia, mientras que en otros países la ofrecerá DAZN.

The Eubank-Smith event will be the umpteenth example of the current trend in the PPV events of the big promoters, in which fans pay basically for the main fight and not for the combination of the main event and its undercard. In other words, of the four fights in the main support of this evening, which will take place at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, United Kingdom, only one does not have an overwhelming favorite.
British championship with international consequences
Regardless of whether it will be entertaining or not in the ring, the most interesting fight on paper is the British and Commonwealth welterweight championship in which undefeated titleholder Ekow “The Engine” Essuman 18(7KO)-0 will put his belts on the line against Chris «2Slick» Kongo 14(7KO)-1.
In this bout, Essuman, who has reached the British top through a continuous and meritorious succession of victories that have changed his projection, will face a boxer who had a good amateur run (in which he was a member of the Team GB) and a promising start to his professional career but in 2021 suffered a decisive defeat against Michael McKinson that was a serious setback to his aspirations.
In addition to the contrast offered by their situations, these fighters usually have very different styles, with Essuman being known for his stamina and his high-pace and Kongo for his technical, mobile and skillful boxing. Add to this the fact that Essuman is 10th IBF, that there will also be a couple of minor titles at stake and that the fight will have consequences for the world rankings, and this really looks like a clash that deserves attention.
In the betting odds Essuman is a very narrow favorite, since he faces as a visitor (he is a member of Frank Warren’s squad, Kongo is part of Boxxer’s) a clash against an opponent with more skill and who has slight advantages in youth and size. However, if Essuman is aware of those disadvantages and fights to compensate for them by imposing his higher pace and a more regular punch output, he could seriously cause difficulties for Kongo, who is often hesitant, who usually has much less fighting intensity and who, therefore, could greatly benefit from a tactical bout.
Post-Juggernaut recovery
In the event will also participate New Zealander former world champion Joseph Parker 30(21KO)-3(1), who will face his first bout since he was brutally knocked out by Joe “Juggernaut” Joyce. Coming from such a precedent, Parker will face an opponent that he should theoretically be able to beat, since he won’t even fight a heavyweight. His opponent will be British cruiserweight Jack «One Smack» Massey 20 (11KO)-1, who hasn’t boxed for 9 months and who in his only high level fight was knocked down and defeated by Riakporhe.
Thus, while we wait to find out what weight Massey will have on the scale, in principle, if the loss to Joyce has not affected his resistance to punishment in a decisive way, Parker should be able to use his precise counterpunching, his well-timed jabs and his clinches to return to winning ways.
Riakporhe and Clarke
The undercard will feature the aforementioned Richard Riakporhe 15(11KO)-0, an unbeaten cruiserweight who, after his win over Fabio Turchi in a semifinal eliminator, is ranked as IBF number 2 behind the mandatory challenger Mateusz Masternak. In any case, regardless of his position on said list, his promoter intends to get him a voluntary opportunity so that he does not have to wait any longer and he can have his first world title fight in the first half of the year.
Before that step forward, Riakporhe will face a tune-up fight against veteran Polish former world champion Krzysztof Glowacki 32(20KO)-3(2), a boxer who is past it and who has only fought once since he was knocked out by Lawrence Okolie almost two years ago.
Finally, it is also worth mentioning the participation of the British heavyweight, Olympic bronze medalist, Frazer «The Eraser» Clarke 4(3KO)-0, who after losing his 100% knockout ratio against Kamil Sokolowski will face another test to his punch, and will make comparisons, facing Argentinian Kevin Nicolás Espíndola 7(2KO)-6. This boxer, who has never been stopped, is known above all for having been the first fighter to reach a decision against another Olympic bronze medalist as Ivan Dychko last June.
The Eubank-Smith event will be televised in the United Kingdom by a Sky PPV (£19.95) from 6:00 p.m. British time (1:00 p.m. ET/10:00 a.m. PT). In other countries the card will be offered by DAZN.
