Previa: Campeonato británico del peso pesado Wardley-Gorman, más Richards-Bolotniks y Ryan-Sánchez en el respaldo del Whyte-Franklin

En 2019, el peso pesado Nathan Gorman 19(13KO)-1(1) disputó el primer campeonato británico de su trayectoria, duelo en el que además se puso a prueba si, más allá de las críticas a su control del peso, podía estar a la altura de otra promesa en ascenso como Daniel Dubois. En ese test Gorman se quedó cortísimo, decepcionando a muchos con su rendimiento, opinión que se afianzó cuando posteriormente se limitó a medirse a oponentes de nivel bajo.
Más de tres años después, Gorman, primo de Tyson Fury, accederá a una nueva pelea por el máximo cetro de Reino Unido, combate en el que muchos piensan que volverá a servir únicamente como peldaño para otro boxeador invicto, en este caso Fabio Wardley 14(13KO)-0.
Wardley es alguien muy diferente a Gorman, puesto que tiene un físico mucho más acorde a lo que se espera de un deportista profesional y ha superado las expectativas hasta cierto punto. Y es que, aunque quienes conducen su carrera fueron algo conservadores en su elección de retos y lo llevaron por la vía del título inglés (los cintos por debajo del británico son a menudo despreciados por los boxeadores de gran nivel de Reino Unido), ha superado prácticamente todos sus combates rápidamente y con notables muestras de contundencia.
Contrastando vivamente los recorridos de uno y otro y considerándose que la indisciplina de Gorman en cuestiones alimenticias puede pasarle factura en cualquier momento, muchos no se pueden sentir cómodos poniendo su dinero en juego por él y Wardley parte como favorito en las apuestas. Con todo, aunque Gorman tiene en cierto modo una espada de Damocles sobre su cabeza, el hecho es que Wardley se ha visto ayudado hasta ahora demasiado por su pegada y nunca ha estado en una pelea táctica seria, teniendo además desventaja en cuanto a experiencia de calidad.
Por ello, si Gorman esta vez sabe estar a la altura de las circunstancias, no se derrumba moralmente ante los golpes de poder recibidos, evita crear una pelea con clinches en la que por su menor contundencia tendría las de perder y ofrece su gran repertorio técnico, que puede llegar a ser verdadermente eficaz e incluso brillante, con contragolpes, movilidad y astucia podría ofrecer un choque intrincado en el que aspirar a un triunfo por decisión. En cambio, si vuelve a cometer los errores del pasado, se queda demasiado en la distancia media y vuelve a sucumbir ante la potencia de un contrincante, a Gorman le costará mucho volver a recuperar la confianza de los fans.
Richards y Ryan
Además de la tercera pelea profesional del plata olímpico británico Pat McCormack 2(2KO)-0 ante el argentino en mala racha Christian «El Elegante» Andino 16(2KO)-5(1)-2, la cartelera principal del Whyte-Franklin, que tendrá lugar este sábado en el Wembley Arena de Londres, Reino Unido, contará junto al Wardley-Gorman con otros dos interesantes combates.
En uno de ellos, dos oponentes de Joshua Buatsi como el británico Craig “Spider” Richards 17(10KO)-3-1 y el letón Ricards “The Lion” Bolotniks 19(8KO)-6(4)-1 afrontarán un choque decisivo en cuanto a su posicionamiento en el ranking WBA. Además de que habrá un título menor de la Asociación en juego, Bolotniks es 4º WBA y Richards es 10º (virtualmente ambos están algunos peldaños por encima de esas posiciones), así que el ganador quedará muy cerca de disputar una eliminatoria final.
En esta ocasión el favorito en las apuestas es Richards, algo lógico a pesar de que su actuación ante Bivol está tremendamente sobrevalorada (el ruso le venció claramente pese a lo que dijeron los comentaristas británicos de DAZN). Al margen de que comparativamente la actuación de Richards ante Buatsi fue muy superior a la de Bolotniks, “Spider” parece haber asentado bien su boxeo sobre el aprovechamiento de sus virtudes y se enfrenta a un adversario que viene de una poco convincente victoria (Hrvoje Sep) y cuyos mejores triunfos han ido perdiendo valor (Michel, Burton y Ekimov).
Por ello, si no es que Richards comete graves errores tácticos o si no es que el rendimiento de Bolotniks renace en forma de una inesperada presión inaguantable, el primero debería poder poner las bases para la victoria.
El otro choque destacado de la cartelera principal contará con la prospecta británica del peso superligero Sandy Ryan 4(2KO)-1 que, tras desquitarse de su único tropiezo ante la excampeona mundial Érica Farías, buscará seguir desarrollándose midiéndose a otra extitular mundial argentina como Anahí “La Indiecita” Sánchez 21(13KO)-5(1). Esta púgil se ha medido a rivales como Katie Taylor, Maiva Hamadouche, Jessica McCaskill o Chantelle Cameron, por lo que cuenta con experiencia de calidad y podría permitir al equipo de Ryan hacer comparaciones interesantes.
De todos modos, aunque perdió con cierta controversia (las cartulinas fueron espantosas) contra McCaskill, ante las otras tres boxeadoras citadas Sánchez fue derrotada solventemente. Así, y no estando Sánchez al nivel de Farías, no hay motivos para pensar que la hábil y veloz Ryan no podrá lograr el triunfo si evita caer en una pelea excesivamente física y en la que su destreza quede contenida.
El evento Whyte-Franklin será emitido por DAZN el sábado a las 20:00 en hora de España, las 19:00 en Reino Unido y las 14:00 ET/11:00 PT.

In 2019, heavyweight Nathan Gorman 19(13KO)-1(1) faced the first British championship of his career, a duel in which was also tested whether, beyond the criticism for his weight control issues, he could be at the level of another rising prospect like Daniel Dubois. In that test Gorman fell very short, disappointing many with his performance and generating negative opinions that he later entrenched fighting only low-level opponents.
On Saturday, more than three years after his defeat against Dubois, Gorman, Tyson Fury’s cousin, will access to a new fight for the British title, championship in which many think that he will only serve as a stepping stone for another undefeated boxer, in this case Fabio Wardley 14(13KO)-0.
Wardley is someone very different from Gorman, since he has a physique much more in line with what is expected of a professional athlete and has exceeded expectations to some extent. Although those who manage his career were somewhat conservative in his choice of challenges and took him through the English title way, he has overcome practically all of his bouts very quickly and with notable displays of forcefulness.
As the careers of both fighters contrast sharply, and many consider that Gorman’s indiscipline regarding food can take its toll on him at any time, a lot of fans cannot feel comfortable putting their money on the line for him, and Wardley is the betting favorite. Still, while Gorman has somewhat of a sword of Damocles over his head, the fact remains that Wardley has been helped far too much by his punching power and that he has never been in a serious tactical fight, having also disadvantage in quality experience.
For this reason, if Gorman knows how to rise to the occasion this time, does not morally collapse by the power punches received, avoids creating a physical fight with clinches and displays his great skill (which sometimes can be truly effective and even brilliant) with counterpunching, mobility and cunning he could offer an intricate matchup in which to aim for a decision win. On the other hand, if he makes the sames mistakes of the past, he stays too much in the middle distance and succumbs again to the power of his opponent, Gorman will have a truly hard time regaining the trust of the fans.
Richards and Ryan
In addition to the third professional fight for British Olympic silver medalist Pat McCormack 2(2KO)-0 against the Argentinian in a losing streak Christian «El Elegante» Andino 16(2KO)-5(1)-2, the Whyte-Franklin main card, which will take place this Saturday at the Wembley Arena in London, United Kingdom, will feature two other interesting matchups.
In one of them, two boxers who have faced Joshua Buatsi such as the British Craig «Spider» Richards 17(10KO)-3-1 and the Latvian Ricards «The Lion» Bolotniks 19(8KO)-6(4)-1 will face a decisive clash in terms of their position in the WBA ranking. In addition to a minor title of the Association at stake, Bolotniks is 4th WBA and Richards is 10th (virtually both are a few steps above those positions), so the winner will be very close to a final eliminator.
This time the betting favorite is Richards, something logical despite the fact that his performance against Bivol is tremendously overrated (the Russian clearly beat him despite what the DAZN commentators stated). Letting aside that, comparatively, Richards’ performance against Buatsi was far superior to that of Bolotniks, «Spider» is taking advantage well of his virtues and he faces an opponent who is coming off an unconvincing victory (Hrvoje Sep) and whose best wins have lost value (Michel, Burton and Ekimov).
So, unless Richards makes a serious tactical mistake or Bolotniks’ performance dramatically improves in the form of an unexpected unbearable pressure, the former should be able to lay the foundations for his victory.
The other notable matchup on the main card will feature British super lightweight prospect Sandy Ryan 4(2KO)-1 who, after getting even for her only setback against former world champion Érica Farías, will seek to continue developing by taking on another former world titleholder from Argentina like Anahí «La Indiecita» Sánchez 21(13 KO)-5(1). This fighter has clashed against the likes of Katie Taylor, Maiva Hamadouche, Jessica McCaskill or Chantelle Cameron, so she has quality experience and could allow Ryan’s team to make interesting comparisons.
In any case, although she lost with some controversy (the cards were horrible) against McCaskill, against the other three boxers mentioned, Sánchez was soundly defeated. Thus, and considering that Sánchez is not at Farias’ level, there is no reason to think that the skillful and fast Ryan will not be able to achieve victory if she avoids falling into an excessively physical fight in which her ability could end up being contained.
