Pocos son los que se han quedado indiferentes tras ver al peso superligero estadounidense Montana “Too Pretty” Love 18(9KO)-0-1 en sus últimos tres combates, aunque las opiniones sobre él varían mucho: algunos están asombrados por sus cualidades técnicas, otros no se mostraron nada satisfechos por su desempeño ante Gabriel Gollaz, algunos recuerdan un decisivo golpe ilegal ante Ivan Baranchyk, otros están entusiasmados por su control de los espacios o su carisma, otros le reprochan que prestase más atención a su perro que a su hija tras una victoria, etc.
La variedad de opiniones, aunque sean malas, es algo que resulta útil para que los promotores puedan hacer debidamente su labor, pero Love debe cumplir sobre el ring para seguir acercándose a una pelea trascendental en la división del peso superligero, en la cual virtualmente es 2º IBF. Aunque en 2023 seguramente le llegará la mayor pugna de su carrera, de momento Love encarará una pelea pensada para su lucimiento en el Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse de Cleveland, Estados Unidos, ante el australiano Stevie “The Viking” Spark 15(14KO)-2(1).
Como los jueces dieron cartulinas demasiado ajustadas en su pelea ante Gollaz y en ella sufrió un knockdown en un momento en el que asumió innecesarios riesgos, Love no tiene una gran ventaja en las apuestas, pero esto parece un error. Y es que Spark, pese a su asombroso porcentaje de knockouts, ha logrado la absoluta mayoría de sus victorias antes rivales modestísimos y posee un estilo frontal y con limitada fluidez que debería pasarle factura ante un Love muchísimo más dinámico, hábil y rápido. Es cierto que la única derrota de Spark fue en el peso superwélter y ante Tim Tszyu, pero que este tropiezo llegase en un reto por encima de sus posibilidades no significa que vaya a estar a la altura en su primer rival de nivel alto en el peso superligero.
La mejor opción de triunfo de Spark pasa por que Love, queriendo evitar las críticas que ha recibido cuando ha peleado de manera conservadora, cometa el terrible error de intercambiar, puesto que entonces el australiano podrá usar su potencia para intentar apuntar a la sorpresa. Sin embargo, si Love boxea con algo de inteligencia, se mantiene en la distancia larga y media-larga y explota su variedad de recursos y rapidez anticipándose o contragolpeando debería poder lograr una clara victoria.
Respaldo del evento
Acompañando a este choque se producirán dos encuentros Estados Unidos vs. Puerto Rico, siendo en uno favorito el norteamericano y en el otro el boricua. En el semifondo, el invicto olímpico Richardson Hitchins 14(6KO)-0 afrontará su primer combate bajo el paraguas de Matchroom Boxing enfrentándose en el peso superligero a Yomar Álamo 20(12KO)-1-1, encuentro en el que el primero, que posee un estilo móvil y técnico, será favorito para vencer a un rival que en principio no parece tener la pegada necesaria para ponerle en críticos apuros.
Por otro lado, el invicto peso superpluma puertorriqueño Christian Tapia 15(12KO)-0, que ha cumplido satisfactoriamente en todos sus pasos adelante, disputará su mayor test como profesional hasta la fecha ante un Thomas Mattice 19(15KO)-3-1 que es resistente (aguantó todos los rounds ante Isaac Cruz) y competente pero que ha tenido múltiples actuaciones por debajo de las expectativas que le han alejado mucho de su valoración inicial como destacado prospecto.
Además, la cartelera principal contará con el tercer combate del año para el invicto peso pluma Raymond Ford 12(6KO)-0-1, que se medirá al namibio Sakaria Lukas 25(17KO)-1-1. El africano viene de un empate ante el exretador mundial y plata olímpico Tugstsogt Nyambayar, pero el hecho es que su actuación en ese choque se sobrevaloró y que Ford parece tener el tipo de boxeo adecuado para lograr una amplia victoria por decisión o incluso un KOT dependiendo de la intensidad con la que encare el duelo.
Este evento será emitido el sábado por DAZN desde la 1:30 de la madrugada en hora española, las 19:30 ET/16:30 PT.

Few have been indifferent after watching American super lightweight Montana “Too Pretty” Love 18(9KO)-0-1 in his last three fights, though opinions on him differ widely: some are amazed by his technical qualities, others were not at all satisfied with his performance against Gabriel Gollaz, some remember a decisive illegal punch against Ivan Baranchyk, others are enthusiastic about his control of distance or his charisma, others reproach him for paying more attention to his dog than to his daughter after a victory, etc.
The variety of opinions, even if they are bad, is something that is useful for promoters to do their job, but Love must deliver in the ring to continue to get closer to a decisive fight at super lightweight, division in which he is virtually 2nd IBF. Although in 2023 he will surely reach the biggest fight of his career, for now Love will face a fight designed as a showcase for him at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland, United States, against the Australian Stevie «The Viking» Spark 15(14KO)-2(1).
Since the judges scorecards were too close in his bout against Gollaz and in it he suffered a knockdown by taking unnecessary risks, there isn’t much difference between Love and Spark in the betting odds, but this seems off. Despite his amazing knockout ratio, Spark has achieved the vast majority of his victories against very low level opponents and has a frontal advance with limited fluidity that should make things difficult for him against a much more dynamic, skillful and faster boxer like Love. It is true that Spark’s only loss was at super welterweight and against Tim Tszyu, but that this setback came in a fight too difficult does not mean that he will be up to his first top 15 opponent at super lightweight.
Spark’s best chance of victory is that Love, wanting to avoid the criticism he has received when he has fought defensively, makes the terrible mistake of exchanging, since then the Australian could use his power to try to aim for the upset. However, if Love boxes with some intelligence, stays in the long and medium-long range and exploits his variety of resources and quickness by punching first or counter-punching, he should be able to achieve a clear victory.
Rest of the main card
Supporting this fight there will be two clashes United States vs. Puerto Rico, with the American being the favorite in one and the Boricua in the other. In the co-feature bout, the undefeated Olympian Richardson Hitchins 14(6KO)-0 will have his first fight with Matchroom Boxing facing Yomar Álamo 20(12KO)-1-1 at super lightweight, a match in which the former, who has a mobile, technical style, will be the favorite to beat an opponent who, in principle, doesn’t seem to have the necessary punch to put him in critical trouble.
On the other hand, the undefeated Puerto Rican super featherweight Christian Tapia 15(12KO)-0, who has successfully fulfilled his mission in all his steps up in competition, will face his biggest test as a professional to date against Thomas Mattice 19(15KO)-3-1, who is resistant (he reached the final against Isaac Cruz) and competent but has had some subpar performances that have put him far away of his initial position as a good prospect.
Additionally, the main card will feature the third fight of the year for undefeated featherweight Raymond Ford 12(6KO)-0-1, who will take on Namibian Sakaria Lukas 25(17KO)-1-1. The African is coming off a draw against former world title challenger, and Olympic silver medalist, Tugstsogt Nyambayar, but the fact is that his performance in that clash was overrated and that Ford seems to have the right boxing style to pull off a wide decision win or even a TKO depending on the intensity with which he fights.
