El debut de Matchroom Boxing en Australia no fue sólo un paso importante para la compañía, sino que este evento también será recordado con afecto por el mexicano-australiano César Mateo “El Tijuanero” Tapia 15(9KO)-0. Y es que en este primer combate de su carrera emitido a grandes audiencias internacionales, Tapia logró una victoria por decisión unánime (99-91, 97-93, 97-93) sobre el invicto y bien valorado Abdoulaye Sakho 7(5KO)-1, apodado Abdoulaye Mayweather.
Situados en el centro del ring y en la distancia media, inicialmente ambos boxeadores tuvieron sus momentos con el jab y con sus pruebas con los golpes de poder al torso, pero indudablemente Tapia era el más fuerte y potente de los dos. Esto quedó claro en el tercer round, en el que una derecha dañó a Sakho. Tapia dio continuidad a esos éxitos posteriormente lanzando su uno-dos y breves combinaciones de golpes curvos que agobiaron un tanto a su rival.
Sakho intentó reaccionar en el quinto round, tomando la iniciativa y atacando con decisión, pero en el sexto volvió a ser sacudido por un derechazo de Tapia. El gran encaje de Sakho le permitió sobrellevar los malos momentos una y otra vez y su tenacidad le sirvió para seguir esforzándose, pero aunque se produjeron rounds disputados, en la mayoría de cruces de golpes Tapia se llevó la mejor parte y los buenos resultados de su contrincante no le bastaron para remontar.
Matchroom tiene un notable número de pesos supermedios con aspiraciones, y Tapia podría escalar posiciones desde su ranking de 14º WBA al defender un título menor de dicho organismo ante Sakho. Así que al “Tijuanero” no deberían faltarle buenas oportunidades en 2023.
Ogden retuvo su cinturón
La emisión de DAZN se inició con un campeonato de Australia del peso superpluma entre el titular Rocky Ogden 3(3KO)-0 y el retador Ben Cameron Hands 3(1KO)-1(1), pelea en la que el primero sólo necesitó un round para imponerse y continuar con buen paso su avance profesional.
Con buenos unos-dos Ogden se mostró rápido, preciso e incisivo, y si bien su oponente trató de dar respuesta con sus ganchos de mano adelantada a la contra, el campeón continuó presionando hasta entrar en la distancia media-corta. Desde esa posición Ogden impactó duros hooks arriba y abajo enlazados con uppercuts hasta que un gancho diestro a la cabeza dañó a su contrincante. Ben Cameron Hands trató de aguantar, aunque no pudo recuperarse a tiempo y una derecha le llevó al tapiz, levantándose pero sin poder evitar la detención arbitral.

Matchroom Boxing’s debut in Australia was not only an important step for the company, but this event will also be fondly remembered by Mexican-Australian Cesar Mateo “El Tijuanero” Tapia 15(9KO)-0. In this first fight of his career broadcast to large international audiences, Tapia achieved a victory by unanimous decision (99-91, 97-93, 97-93) over the undefeated and well rated Abdoulaye Sakho 7(5KO)-1, nicknamed Abdoulaye Mayweather.
Positioned in the center of the ring and in the middle distance, initially both fighters had their moments with the jab and with power shots to the body, but Tapia was undoubtedly stronger and more powerful. This became clear in the third round, in which a right hand hurt Sakho. Tapia followed those successes by landing his one-two and brief combinations of hooks that somewhat overwhelmed his opponent.
Sakho tried to react in the fifth round, taking the initiative and attacking with determination, but in the sixth he was again rocked by a right hand from Tapia. Sakho’s great chin allowed him to overcome bad moments time and time again and his tenacity helped him to continue offering a good effort, but although there were contested rounds, in most of the exchanges Tapia had better results and the successes of his opponent were not enough to come back.
Matchroom has a notable number of super middleweights with aspirations, and Tapia could move up from his ranking as 14th WBA due to his defense of a minor title against Sakho. So «El Tijuanero» will surely have good opportunities in 2023.
Ogden retained his belt
The DAZN broadcast kicked off with an Australian super featherweight championship between titleholder Rocky Ogden 3(3KO)-0 and challenger Ben Cameron Hands 3(1KO)-1(1), fight in which the former needed just one round to win and keep advancing at good pace in his career.
With good one-twos Ogden was quick, precise and incisive, and while his opponent tried to answer with his counter lead hooks, the champion continued to press until he reached the mid-short distance. From that position Ogden landed hard hooks up and down linked with uppercuts until a right hook to the head hurt his opponent. Ben Cameron Hands tried to resist, but he couldn’t recover enough and a right hand took him to the mat. The boxer got up but was unable to avoid the referee’s stoppage.
