Dickies Arena, Estados Unidos.

Vergil Ortiz defeated awkward McKinson by TKO

Dickies Arena, United States. WBA welterweight eliminator.

The promising American welterweight Vergil Ortiz Jr. 19(19KO)-0 faced a test on Saturday in which he had more risk than reward. That is to say, although the position of mandatory WBA challenger was at stake and it was unfeasible that he could be defeated by the British Michael McKinson 22(2KO)-1(1), the latter has an awkward style that could prevent him from having a performance as good as expected from him. Certainly, Ortiz didn’t shine as bright as he has done in other occasions, though he did pull off a ninth-round TKO win over the undefeated southpaw.

McKinson’s tricky style was visible in the first round, in which he landed straight hands and, like so many other times, entangled the actions with his unorthodoxy and caused a cut due to a clash of heads. From then on he didn’t have the same successes, but from time to time he connected cunning counters, made Ortiz miss quite a few hands with his waist dodges (many of them illegally low) and tried to avoid giving clear opportunities to get hit with his mobility.

In any case, from almost the beginning Ortiz punches were by far the hardest, clearest and most dangerous. Although his pressure wasn’t as overwhelming as in other bouts, Ortiz’s left hooks and straight right hands hit hard McKinson, who resisted this shots surprisingly well. Anyway, the rounds were won by Ortiz, whose punishment was piling up on the Briton, especially powerful hooks to the body that gradually wore him down.

Finally, in the eighth round, a left hook to the body made McKinson touch the canvas, and it was difficult for the fighter to reach the ninth round. In this one, a body shot took him to the mat again. In the restart, McKinson tried to resist running but was unable to prevent his corner from throwing in the towel.

Ortiz’s performance generated very different analyses, depending on how McKinson is rated. Those who think he is a skilled and capable fighter were surprised by the fact that Ortiz could beat him by stoppage, while those who do not think highly of McKinson considered that Ortiz’s performance was simple and full of mistakes and that a boxer as Jaron Ennis could have scored a KO much sooner.

Be that as it may, there is no doubt that Ortiz is a very strong and persistent boxer, dangerous in the second halves, who, despite his mistakes and defensive breaches, is one of the most interesting contenders in the welterweight division, in which he now theoretically has guaranteed a world title fight.
