Tyrone McKenna defeated the brave Chris Jenkins by questionable unanimous decision in the Conlan-Marriaga co-feature

Any boxing fan has seen this type of situation many times: a contested fight, with rounds difficult to score, between two tough fighters in which the visitor seems to do more to deserve victory but in which the judges give the decision to the local. This is what happened in the duel between the Belfast boxer Tyrone “The Mighty Celt” McKenna 23(6KO)-3(1)-1 and Welshman Chris “Rok’n’Rolla” Jenkins 23(8KO)-6( 2)-3, a fight that ended with a questionable unanimous decision victory (double 96-95 and a strange 97-94) for McKenna.

In the first round both boxers connected hard hooks up and down in the center of the ring, approach that generally continued throughout the first half, entertaining the crowd with exciting exchanges. When in the second round the southpaw McKenna tried to walk and use his straight punches, he shook his rival with a counter, but overall the actions constantly returned to the center of the ring, where Jenkins used his punching rate to be superior by number of hands landed.

Seeing that he was being outworked by “Rok’n’Rolla” and that the battle of attrition was wearing him out, from the halfway point McKenna tried to walk more and use his straight punches more, something that worked better for him with some striking counters. Still, while Jenkins couldn’t sustain a pressure high enough to neutralize his opponent, he continued to connect good left hooks to the head, hook combinations to the torso, and crisp right hands to the face, so it seemed he hadn’t totally lost his advantage and that he had done enough to get away with the win.

This second loss in a row (the previous one was to Florian Marku in April) puts Jenkins in a bad position, but he deserves a lot of credit. Fighting on the road against a bigger boxer known for being a tough warrior who likes to exchange, Jenkins battled on short distance until he forced his rival to back down and, in the eyes of many observers, achieved the win.

As for McKenna, he is a boxer who is not boring, but it seems unlikely that he can obtain a victory against a solid top 15 in a division like welterweight.

Second triumph
This clash was preceded by a quick victory of the Irish super welterweight, with a good amateur career, Kieran Molloy 2(2KO)-0, who beat in just two rounds the normally resistant Russian Evgenii Vazem 9(4KO)-36(8). The prospect used his punches to the body firmly before, in the second round, a left hook down, preceded by a left uppercut-right hook combination, put Vazem on the mat. The boxer got up too late and the referee stopped the bout.
