Mikaela Mayer y Alycia Baumgardner unificarán tres títulos en pelea por el número 1 superpluma

La compañía Top Rank ha confirmado oficialmente que se ha hecho con los derechos de organización del mayor enfrentamiento actual posible en la división del peso superpluma femenino. Esta pelea es la unificación de cinturones mundiales WBO-IBF-WBC entre las campeonas estadounidenses Mikaela Mayer y Alycia Baumgardner, que según Top Rank ha sido ya acordada y que se producirá en una fecha por determinar entre finales de verano y principios de otoño [hemisferio norte]. Esta noticia ha supuesto un gran cambio respecto a ciertos planes existentes.
En un principio, el promotor Eddie Hearn, líder de Matchroom Boxing, sugirió meses atrás que su idea era que Baumgardner (que es parte de su escuadra) unificase ante otra boxeadora de la compañía como la titular WBA, la surcoreana Hyun Mi Choi. De ese modo, se esperaba que Choi, que ha dejado actuaciones poco convincentes en sus últimos combates, fuese sacada de la ecuación en la lucha por el número 1 de la división y que el proceso de unificación se culminase posteriormente con una pelea por el título de campeona indiscutida entre Mayer y Baumgardner.
Además, recientemente Baumgardner había señalado que era preferible que un choque entre Mayer y ella se aplazase en el tiempo considerablemente para que ganase dimensión, así que no se esperaba que terminase sucediendo todo lo contrario.
En fin, con Hyun Mi Choi sin pelear desde hace ya ocho meses y no habiendo estado caracterizada su carrera precisamente por la frecuencia de combates, Mayer y Baumgardner saltarán directamente a la «gran final» y posteriormente ya apuntarán a poner el broche de oro ante la titular asiática.
En el anuncio oficial de Top Rank, Bob Arum señaló:
“El prodigioso talento de Mikaela Mayer sólo es igualado por su tremenda ambición. Ella quiere los combates más grandes, y Alycia Baumgardner es una digna campeona. Este es un enorme evento y uno de los más esperados combates del boxeo femenino”.

The promotional company Top Rank has officially confirmed that it has secured the rights for the biggest fight in the current female super featherweight division. This bout is the unification of the WBO-IBF-WBC world belts between the American champions Mikaela Mayer and Alycia Baumgardner, which according to Top Rank has already been agreed and will take place on a date to be determined between late summer and early fall [Northern Hemisphere]. This news is a big change regarding certain preexisting plans.
Initially, promoter Eddie Hearn, leader of Matchroom Boxing, suggested months ago that his idea was for Baumgardner (who is part of his stable) to unify against another boxer of his company such as the WBA titleholder, the South Korean Hyun Mi Choi.
