Jermall Charlo seguirá a la deriva y peleará contra Sulecki, que no ganó ni un solo asalto ante Demetrius Andrade

El estadounidense Jermall Charlo ha pedido incontables veces un enfrentamiento ante un boxeador de la élite, si bien durante la mayor parte de su carrera reciente no ha hecho ni mucho menos lo suficiente para perseguirlo, enfrentándose a numerosos púgiles muy por debajo del nivel de la élite del peso medio. En este sentido se debe subrayar que, desde 2016, sus dos mayores combates han sido las peleas ante dos veteranos púgiles venidos a menos y en la recta final de sus carreras como Matt Korobov (al que derrotó con controversia) y Sergiy Derevyanchenko (al que venció por la mínima).
Pues bien, teniendo en cuenta este panorama y que en su último combate (el pasado junio) tuvo una actuación decepcionante ante Juan Macías Montiel, Charlo debería haber dado un paso al frente y haber escogido un púgil de la cumbre, en buen estado y bien valorado ante el que poder hacer una declaración de intenciones. Sin embargo, ha sido confirmado de manera definitiva que su próximo adversario será el polaco Maciej Sulecki, que sólo ha peleado dos veces en los últimos tres años y que en su último combate ante Demetrius Andrade no ganó ni un asalto en las cartulinas de los jueces.
En definitiva, el combate ha sido pactado sólo para que Charlo busque un knockout con el que intentar superar la actuación de Andrade, si bien este “mensaje” de materializarse realmente resultaría intrascendente, puesto que ambos invictos púgiles estadounidenses verdaderamente deberían preocuparse por el hecho de estar desperdiciando buena parte de los mejores años de sus carreras.
Dado que el Charlo-Sulecki se producirá el 18 de junio, el mismo día de la unificación Beterbiev-Smith, el choque todavía se ve más empequeñecido aún, no siendo respaldado tampoco por peleas de extraordinario calibre.
La emisión de Showtime desde el Toyota Center de Houston, Estados Unidos, contará también con un combate entre el destacado prospecto del peso ligero Frank Martin y el panameño Ricardo Núñez, que fue batido en dos asaltos por Gervonta Davis, y con un encuentro del peso supergallo mejor emparejado entre el local Ra’eese Aleem y el filipino Mike Plania.

American Jermall Charlo has asked for a fight with an elite boxer countless times, yet for most of his recent career he hasn’t done nearly enough to pursue it, facing numerous fighters well below the level of the middleweight elite. In this sense, it should be noted that, since 2016, his two biggest fights have been the ones against two veteran and punished boxers in the final stretch of their careers as Matt Korobov (whom he controversially defeated) and Sergiy Derevyanchenko (whom he beat by narrow margin).
Taking into account this situation and that in his last fight (last June) he had a disappointing performance against Juan Macías Montiel, Charlo should have taken a step forward and chosen a boxer from the top, in good condition and well rated against which to make a statement. However, it has been confirmed that his next opponent will be the Polish Maciej Sulecki, who has only fought twice in the last three years and who in his last bout against Demetrius Andrade did not win a round on the judges’ scorecards.
This opponent has been only selected for Charlo to look for a knockout with which to try to overcome Andrade’s performance over Sulecki, although this «message» if it really materializes would be inconsequential, since both undefeated American boxers should really worry about the fact that they are wasting a good part of the best years of their careers.
Given that the Charlo-Sulecki will take place on June 18, the same day as the unification Beterbiev-Smith, the clash looks even less appealing. In addition, it will not be supported either by fights of extraordinary level.
The Showtime broadcast from the Toyota Center in Houston, United States, will also feature a fight between the outstanding lightweight prospect Frank Martin and Panamanian Ricardo Núñez, who was beaten in two rounds by Gervonta Davis, and a better matched super bantamweight duel between the local Ra’eese Aleem and the Filipino Mike Plania.
