Previa: Paul Butler se enfrenta a Jonas Sultan en velada de Probellum. Casimero fuera del combate por uso de la sauna

Se suponía que el filipino John Riel Casimero y el británico Paul Butler 33(15KO)-2(1) deberían haber peleado el pasado diciembre en un mundial WBO del peso gallo, pero entonces unos supuestos problemas de salud del primero conllevaron que la pugna se aplazase. Entonces se rumoreó mucho que Casimero realmente no estaba cerca de dar el peso gallo y que simplemente había evitado acudir al pesaje para no perder su cinturón en la báscula.
Pues bien, cuatro meses después, teóricamente el titular Casimero y el retador obligatorio Butler estaban emplazados a enfrentarse este viernes encabezando una velada de Probellum desde el Echo Arena de Liverpool, Reino Unido. Sin embargo, la pugna nuevamente no tendrá lugar, otra vez por cuestiones relacionadas con el peso de Casimero.
Y es que el tagalo ha incumplido las normas del BBBofC al usar una sauna para intentar bajar peso días antes del combate, asegurando la federación que tiene pruebas de este hecho antirreglamentario. Asimismo, se afirma que en los controles que se le hicieron a Casimero éste estaba ¡una libra por debajo del techo del peso supermosca!, algo que sin duda resulta muy extraño, más allá del uso o no de una sauna, teniendo en cuenta sus precedentes problemas con el peso.
En fin, aunque no habrá Casimero-Butler, sí se producirá una pelea para el segundo de ambos, puesto que el WBO ha dado su visto bueno para que el británico pelee contra el exretador mundial filipino Jonas Sultán 18(11KO)-5 por un provisional cetro interino mientras se toma una decisión sobre qué se debe hacer con el monarca.
A primera vista muchos sentirán que Sultán supone una menor amenaza que Casimero, pero el hecho es que Butler en absoluto tiene en este remplazo un oponente sencillo. El visitante es un boxeador más fuerte que él, con una pegada que no queda debidamente reflejada en su porcentaje de knockouts, que cuenta en su récord con un triunfo sobre el propio Casimero (en 2017) y que llega de truncar el récord invicto del prospecto puertorriqueño Carlos Caraballo derribándole cuatro veces. En cambio, Butler, que ha sufrido amplias derrotas en sus dos mayores peleas (Zolani Tete y Emmanuel Rodríguez), llega al combate habiendo padecido serias dificultades contra Willibaldo García, púgil con algunas similitudes en su estilo con el de Sultán y al que sólo venció con una controvertida decisión dividida.
Es verdad que Sultán es un boxeador un tanto irregular, que en ocasiones tiene grandes actuaciones ante difíciles oponentes y que otras veces no luce ante rivales teóricamente más sencillos, debiéndose destacar que entra al enfrentamiento con poca antelación. No obstante, y aunque el local tiene cualidades técnicas, Butler sólo ha logrado tres victorias antes del límite en sus últimas doce victorias y cuenta con un estilo simple y convencional que podría no ser suficiente para lidiar con la heterodoxa explosividad de Sultán. De ese modo, si el filipino tiene una gran agresividad y presiona con fuerza y sin perder tiempo tendrá una clara opción de victoria que se desvanecería si acepta una pelea táctica y con un ritmo contenido.
Respaldo del evento
En teoría, la cartelera principal contará con otros tres combates, siendo uno de ellos la pelea del peso pluma entre el exretador mundial James Dickens 30(11KO)-4(3) y el excampeón de Europa Andoni Gago 25(7KO)-4(1)-1. Estilísticamente, este parece un choque complicado para el visitante Gago, ya que el zurdo Dickens controla muy bien la distancia, es inteligente y en los últimos tiempos se ha mostrado muy firme y preciso con sus contragolpes. De ese modo, el español podría tener dificultades para marcar la diferencia con su aguerrido y frontal avance si no es que el británico se muestra incapaz de adaptarse al ritmo de su rival o comete el error de renunciar a sus ventajas para aceptar una pelea física.
En otro de los combates, el excampeón británico del peso superligero Sam Maxwell 16(11KO)-0 afrontará una primera toma de contacto seria con el ámbito internacional enfrentándose al mexicano Alejandro Meneses 15(8KO)-5(3). En las casas de apuestas Maxwell es amplio favorito, pero es un púgil con importantes brechas en su boxeo y que se enfrenta a un oponente que viene de ganar ante el invicto estadounidense con buena base amateur Nigel Fennell y ante el peligroso “Puma” Rodríguez. Por ello, Maxwell necesitará su mejor versión y mostrarse contundente con su uno-dos-hook si quiere evitar sorpresas.
La velada se completará con un nuevo combate para el prometedor Peter McGrail 3(2KO)-0, boxeador de gran carrera amateur que en su cuarta pelea profesional se verá las caras con el experimentado mexicano Uriel López 15(7KO)-17(6)-1.

The Filipino John Riel Casimero and the British Paul Butler 33(15KO)-2(1) should have fought last December in a WBO bantamweight world championship, but then alleged health problems of the former postponed the match. It was rumored that actually Casimero was not close to the bantamweight limit and that he had simply avoided going to the weigh-in to prevent losing his belt on the scale.
Well, four months later, theoretically the belt holder Casimero and his mandatory challenger Butler were set to square off this Friday headlining an evening of Probellum from the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK. However, the fight will not take place, again for issues related to Casimero’s weight.
The Filipino boxer has breached the rules of the BBBofC by using a sauna to try to lose weight days before the fight, assuring the federation that it has proof of this illegal action. On the other hand, is stated that in Casimero’s weigh tests he was one pound below the super flyweight limit, something that is undoubtedly very strange, beyond the use of a sauna, taking into account his precedent problems with the weight.
So, although there will be no Casimero-Butler, there will be a bout for the latter, since the WBO has given its approval for the British to fight against former world challenger Jonas Sultán 18(11KO)-5 for a provisional interim title while a decision is made on what should be done with the monarch.
At first glance, many will feel that Sultan is less of a threat than Casimero, but the fact is that Butler by no means has an easy opponent in this replacement. The visitor is a stronger boxer, with a punch that is not properly reflected in his knockout ratio, who has a win over Casimero (in 2017) and who comes from beating undefeated Puerto Rican Carlos Caraballo knocking him down four times. On the other hand, Butler, who has suffered wide defeats in his two biggest fights (Zolani Tete and Emmanuel Rodríguez), comes to the fight having suffered serious difficulties against Willibaldo García, a boxer with some similarities in his style to Sultán and whom he only beat with a controversial split decision.
It is true that Sultan is a somewhat irregular boxer, as sometimes has great performances against difficult opponents and other times he does not shine against rivals that are theoretically easier, and it should be noted that he enters to the bout on short notice. However, while the local has technical qualities, Butler has only obtained three stoppage wins in his last 12 victories and has a simple, conventional style that might not be enough to deal with Sultan’s unorthodox explosiveness. In this way, if the Filipino has great aggressiveness and presses hard and without wasting time, he will have a clear chance of victory that would vanish if he accepts a tactical fight with a low pace.
Undercard
In theory, the main card will feature three other fights, one of them being the featherweight bout between former world title challenger James Dickens 30(11KO)-4(3) and former European champion Andoni Gago 25(7KO)-4(1)-1. Stylistically, this looks like a tough matchup for the visitor Gago, as the southpaw Dickens controls the distance very well, is intelligent and of late has been very firm and precise with his counterpunches. In this way, the Spaniard could find it difficult to make a difference with his brave and frontal advance unless the British is unable to adapt to his rival’s rhythm or makes the mistake of giving up his advantages to accept a physical fight.
In another fight, former British super lightweight champion Sam Maxwell 16(11KO)-0 will face a serious international test facing Mexican Alejandro Meneses 15(8KO)-5(3). In the betting odds, Maxwell is wide favorite, but he is a boxer with important flaws and who faces an opponent who comes from victories against the undefeated American with a good amateur base Nigel Fennell and against the dangerous “Puma” Rodríguez. So, Maxwell will need to have his best version and be forceful and consistent with his one-two-hook if he wants to avoid surprises.
The evening will be completed with a new fight for the promising Peter McGrail 3(2KO)-0, boxer with a great amateur career who in his fourth professional fight will face the experienced Mexican Uriel López 15 (7KO)-17(6)-1.
