Previa: Sunny Edwards expone su cinto mundial ante Waseem en segunda velada de Probellum este fin de semana

Unas 24 horas después de que comience el evento de Probellum del viernes, el sábado tendrá lugar otra cartelera de esta promotora desde la misma sede del Duty Free Tennis Stadium de Dubái, Emiratos Árabes Unidos. Esta segunda velada contará en su combate estelar con un campeonato mundial IBF del peso mosca entre el británico Sunny “Showtime” Edwards 17(4KO)-0 y el pakistaní Muhammad “Falcon” Waseem 12(8KO)-1, pelea que se pactó de forma inesperada.
Y es que Waseem llega de ganar una eliminatoria WBA del peso mosca ante Rober Barrera, por lo que se suponía que iba a seguir la ruta de la Asociación hacia el mundial. Con todo, finalmente el acceso al segundo campeonato de su carrera (el primero lo perdió por ajustada decisión ante Mthalane) le vino no a través de una oportunidad obligatoria WBA, sino de una propuesta voluntaria del campeón IBF, que tendrá que medirse obligatoriamente en unos meses al peligroso Ricardo Sandoval.
Por otro lado, Edwards combatió hace sólo tres meses contra el duro Jayson Mama, de modo que también resultó sorprendente que estuviese dispuesto a pugnar tan seguido en una era en la que tres meses es el descanso medio que realizan muchos boxeadores antes de encarar un campamento de entrenamiento de dos meses previo a un duelo. Puede que la explicación a la frecuencia de combates de Edwards es que éste quiere estar preparado al máximo para encarar una enorme pugna en la presente temporada, hablándose mucho de un posible duelo de unificación contra el campeón WBC mosca Julio César Martínez.
Regresando al Edwards-Waseem, éste es un evidente choque de estilos en el que ambos necesitarán desplegar de la manera mejor posible sus virtudes para lograr la victoria, si bien parece estar en manos del monarca que este encuentro sea más fácil o más difícil. Esto quiere decir que, aunque Waseem necesita mostrar una agresividad firme y constante como hizo ante Barrera y no contra Mthalane, la clave del combate estará en si Edwards comete el grave error de quedarse en el centro del ring (como hizo al principio ante Jayon Mama) o si aprovecha su movilidad, su defensa y sus contragolpes.
Quizás en intercambios en la distancia media la destreza de Edwards podría ser decisiva igualmente, pero correría riesgos, además innecesarios. En cambio, si se mueve con su característica fluidez, jabea con astucia, realiza sus excelentes esquivas y usa su gran variedad de contragolpes debería poder generar complicaciones críticas a Waseem y encaminarse hacia una clara victoria.
Prograis al acecho del mundial
Por lo que se ha visto hasta ahora del estadounidense Regis “Rougarou” Prograis 26(22KO)-1 se podría argumentar perfectamente que es el mejor superligero sin corona de la actualidad, y seguramente muchos considerarán que en una revancha podría ganar a Josh Taylor si el duelo tuviese lugar ahora mismo. Con todo, pese a su gran nivel, el hecho es que Prograis todavía no tendría asegurado su acceso a un mundial si Taylor dejase sus cuatro cinturones vacantes, algo que tratará de solucionar en parte enfrentándose este sábado al británico Tyrone “The Mighty Celt” McKenna 22(6KO)-2-1.
Según anunció en sus promociones Probellum, este combate será una eliminatoria final WBC del peso superligero, pero esto parece improbable siendo McKenna 17º WBC y Prograis 3º por detrás de José Zepeda y José Carlos Ramírez. En cualquier caso, si es una eliminatoria semifinal, la pelea debería servirle a Prograis para afianzar sus aspiraciones titulares y presentar una candidatura sólida al mundial. Y es que Prograis es claro favorito para imponerse.
McKenna es un púgil intrincado y que sólo ha padecido derrotas ajustadas ante Jack Catterall y Ohara Davies, si bien Prograis tiene muchísima más potencia, es zurdo al igual que él y, pese a la desventaja en altura, tiene una gran destreza para acortar espacios y causar estragos. Por ello, y aunque sea por su claridad con los golpes de poder y su eficaz defensa activa, “Rougarou” debería poder lograr el triunfo pese a los obstáculos que siempre genera a sus rivales McKenna.
Un olímpico y un excampeón
Entre los diversos encuentros que compondrán el respaldo de la velada, destacan dos de las pugnas. En una de ellas participará el olímpico armenio Hovhannes Bachkov 2(1KO)-0, peso superligero que en su primer duelo pactado a diez rounds intentará hacer comparaciones con Alberto Puello y Shakhram Giyasov enfrentándose a un oponente de ambos, el argentino Cristian Rafael Coria 29(13KO)-9(1)-2. Por otro lado, el excampeón mundial supergallo TJ Doheny 22(16KO)-3 tratará de recuperarse de su derrota ante Michael Conlan combatiendo contra el veterano mexicano, convertido en piedra de toque, César “Corazón” Juárez 27(20KO)-10(3).
Esta cartelera será emitida por Eurosport 2 y (en España también DAZN) desde las 17:00 en hora española, las 16:00 en Reino Unido y las 12:00 ET/9:00 PT.

About 24 hours after the start of this Friday’s Probellum event, another card from this company will take place on Saturday in the same venue, the Duty Free Tennis Stadium in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This second fight night will feature in its main event an IBF flyweight world championship between the British Sunny “Showtime” Edwards 17(4KO)-0 and the Pakistani Muhammad “Falcon” Waseem 12(8KO)-1, bout that was agreed unexpectedly.
Waseem won a WBA flyweight eliminator against Rober Barrera, so he was supposed to follow the route of the Association to the world championship. However, finally the access to the second championship of his career (he lost the first one by a close decision against Mthalane) came not through a mandatory WBA opportunity, but through a voluntary proposal from the IBF champion, who will have to fight in a few months against dangerous mandatory challanger Ricardo Sandoval.
On the other hand, Edwards match against tough Jayson Mama was three months ago, so it was also surprising that he was willing to fight so often in an era where three months is the average break many fighters take before heading to a two months training camp prior to a duel. Perhaps the explanation for Edwards’ frequency of fights is that he wants to be fully prepared to face a huge match this season, possibly a unification against WBC flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martínez.
Returning to the Edwards-Waseem, this is an obvious clash of styles in which both will need to display their virtues in the best possible way to achieve victory, although it seems to be up to the monarch to make this match easier or more difficult. This means that while Waseem needs to show consistent aggressiveness like he did against Barrera and not against Mthalane, the key to the bout will be whether Edwards makes the serious mistake of staying in the center of the ring (as he did in the firsts rounds against Jayon Mama) or if he takes advantage of his mobility, his defense and his counterattacks.
Perhaps in exchanges at mid range Edwards’ skill could be decisive as well, but he would take unnecessary risks. Instead, if he moves with his characteristic fluidity, jabs cunningly and uses his wide variety of counterpunches and dodges, he should be able to critically complicate the fight to Waseem and achieve a clear win.
Prograis getting closer to world championship
It could be perfectly argued that, right now, the American Regis “Rougarou” Prograis 26(22KO)-1 is the best uncrowned super lightweight, and surely many will consider that in a rematch he could beat Josh Taylor. However, despite his high level, the fact is that Prograis still not have secured his access to a world championship if Taylor vacates his four belts, something that he will try to solve in part by facing British Tyrone «The Mighty Celt» McKenna 22(6KO)-2-1.
Probellum announced in its promotions that this fight is a final WBC super lightweight eliminator, but this seems unlikely, as McKenna is ranked 17th WBC and Prograis 3rd behind José Zepeda and José Carlos Ramírez. In any case, if it is a semifinal eliminator, the fight should serve Prograis to strengthen his aspirations to the title.
McKenna is an intricate fighter who has only suffered close losses to Jack Catterall and Ohara Davies, although Prograis has a lot more power, he is a southpaw like him and, despite the height disadvantage, has a great ability to close distance and hurt his opponents. For this reason, even if it’s because of his clarity with his power punches and his active defense, «Rougarou» should be able to achieve victory despite the obstacles that McKenna always generates to his rivals.
An Olympian and a former champion
Among the various fights that will compose the undercard of the evening, two of the fights stand out. In one of them will particapte the Armenian Olympian Hovhannes Bachkov 2(1KO)-0, a super lightweight who in his first ten-round match will try to make comparisons with Alberto Puello and Shakhram Giyasov facing Argentine Cristian Rafael Coria 29(13KO)-9(1)-2. On the other hand, former super bantamweight world champion TJ Doheny 22(16KO)-3 will try to recover from his loss to Michael Conlan by fighting Mexican veteran César “Corazón” Juárez 27(20KO)-10(3).
