Preview: After losses to Devin Haney, lightweights Zaur Abdullaev and Jorge Linares fight this Saturday in WBC eliminator

In 2019 the American Devin Haney had a great year since, starting his agreement with DAZN, he scored two great victories by stoppage. One of them came against the Russian Zaur Abdullaev 14(8KO)-1(1), an undefeated fighter with a solid amateur career and who was having good performances but who against Haney was tremendously below expectations, enduring only four rounds.

After this success, Haney never shone the same way again, offering tedious fights against Alfredo Santiago and Yuriorkis Gamboa before being shook hard by former world champion Jorge “El Niño de Oro” Linares 47(29KO)-6(5). In any case, although the criticisms were piling up regarding his performances, Haney achieved a unanimous victory against Linares that in the eyes of many meant that the Venezuelan veteran had already had his last important fight.

However, this Saturday, at the RCC Boxing Academy in Yekaterinburg, Russia, Linares will have a new decisive fight in which to look for one more bout at the top, since he will be part of a WBC lightweight eliminator against the aforementioned Abdullaev, who is eager to prove that the version of him that was seen against Haney was not even a small part of what he could be as a professional.

As the Council has a very confusing situation in the lightweight division with its franchise title, its various postponed eliminators, etc., perhaps many have not clear what prize this fight will have for the victor, although the WBC itself has explained that the winner will be within reach of a rematch duel against Haney, «champion» below the “franchise” belt holder and unified titlist George Kambosos.

Like so many other times when a boxer nears retirement, one of the big questions is how much Linares has left in his boxing, as if he can use his tremendous skills with combinations he should be able to take advantage of Abdullaev’s defensive mistakes. However, the Russian is in a streak of three good victories, he is nine years younger, he is settling more in his professional boxing and it seems that after rehydration he puts a lot of weight on the ring.

Thus, as Linares’ explosiveness seems to have diminished, although he may be able to use his ability and resources to succeed in a tactical fight and score clear punches against a slow Abdullaev, and maybe hurt him, if the Russian manages to create an intense and physical fight and insists with his one-two-hook, maybe, if he makes it through the first half without taking major damage, he could use his size and strength to try to achieve decisive successes in the second half.

Linares-Abdullaev undercard
On the undercard of this match will be ranked boxers and prospects. Among those ranked is the Russian super featherweight Mark Urvanov 20(10KO)-2-1, who will fight in a WBA eliminator against the Venezuelan Ángel «Humildad» Rodríguez 19(10KO)-1 waiting for an eventual access to the world championship. Another WBA ranked fighter is the Belarusian middleweight, with good amateur career, Mikalai Vesialou 11(5KO)-0-2, 11th WBA who will try to put distance from a draw fighting against the tough Evgeny Terentiev 17(8KO)-4(1).

On the other hand, among the various prospects that will participate in the card, stands out an excellent super lightweight duel between two fighters with great amateur careers. In it, the undefeated Russian Ivan Kozlovsky 4(2KO)-0, world gold medalist with 262 victories as an amateur, will face a serious test against the Ukrainian-Armenian Zoravor Petrosyan 12(5KO)-1, junior world bronze medalist who, despite coming from a loss by decision, has had some very good performances as a pro.

Boets Tv will televise this evening in Russia from 3:00 p.m. Moscow time, while ESPN+ will broadcast it at 9:30 a.m. ET/6:30 a.m. PT.
